Private servers and loving the content

  • Ok have to say loving the content and have even managed to talk some old players into coming back. Have been asked a lot by other players some randoms, family and friends about private servers a little bit like other games such as minecraft. Some of the comments have ranged from I would be willing to pay from £6 to £15 a month for a private server. The idea was to have a server you could invite friends onto without worry of cheating or being griefed. This would also allow people to do ship races or friend battles, along with solo slooping it with no worries.

Have to say some of these ideas really appealed to me, would I be willing to part with money probably because it would allow me to go online with the whole family without worry, such as kids, I love this enviroment and game because its brought family and friends closer together and have fun, also loving the new Legend commendations that will eventually unlock new gear, thank you for something to grind for, been playing since Alfa and it just going from strength to strength.

  • You said... Private servers?

    again

  • @waylander1577 What do you mean by "without worry of cheating or being griefed"? I don't think there is any cheats that you can use and griefing I assume you mean if somebody kills you, sink the ship and gets all your loot? But isn't that the point of the game?

  • Bypassing what is and isn't a valid reason to WANT private servers, I think I've read that the whole SoT setup uses a public/shared server model that doesn't convert well. I am far from tech savvy when it comes to such things, but that might be a significant hurdle.

If it WERE possible without effecting the development of the main adventure mode that we currently have, I would have no problems with it. Even if people just don't want to be killed and have their stuff stolen. Fine. No skin off my back. I think it goes without saying that progress wouldn't be transferable to the public server.

The plus side to such a setup, would be the ability to invite a full server that always comes back to the same shared world. You could have your own little private wars between pirate factions. Store loot in game. Occupy islands. that would be a blast.

Look it up on a search engine. It takes less than a minute to find something regarding that topic.

  • @waylander1577 - Who would pay for and maintain the hardware and software on this Private Server? Everyone using the Private Server would not have their progress, commendations recognized since that is all done on the official servers? I don't see how it could be viable.

  • @bundui I agree completely. That IS the point of the game. I'm so tired of people complaining about being attacked. But if "pirates" and i use the term loosely, want a safe space to dig and fight skeletons.. why not let them have a private server. No rep thou, only gold should be able to be attained in a Private server. imo.

  • @waylander1577

Ahoy there, this is a discussion and suggestion which has been made several times on the forums and Rare are aware of these.

Sea of Thieves is, at it's heart, a Shared World Adventure Game, where we'll always face the uncertainty of how that ship on the horizon is going to act towards us and likewise we're able to decide what our actions will be. That's an essential part of the unique experience.

Having said that, we do know that it's possible to borrow/beg/acquire other ships on a server through negotiation or exchange of treasure, so that more pirates from fleets and friendship groups can be invited to voyage alongside us. It's a successful strategy which has seen groups of one or two ships to server takeovers and I think this fits in well at the moment because it allows the intent of the game experience to be maintained whilst still allowing for groups to be formed.

It's not that it's hard to offer private servers; it's that you don't want to as a game developer because it opens the door to hacking, pirated copies, as well as new exploits.

    Really?

I've ran into people using aimbots, ESP, speed hacks, and invincibility (One guy took damage from the entire crew at the same time, I got at least 12 swords swings that absolutely hit and without eating a banana one, lived and still killed everyone.).

Just google Sea of Thieves hacks, a list of services/software will result. This is the problem with cross-platform between XBox and PC. Have I seen a large amount of cheaters? No, but I would say a total of 5 to 6 since the game's release.

  • @waylander1577 great idea I would love to be able to battle friends but it should be free. No one should have to pay to play with more than 3 friends.

  • I would say not private servers, but a server browser. This however would also have people whining about being sunk still, as it would make it easy for friends to get multiple crews on the same server and team up. Next best thought is private servers hosted by Rare, but you get no xp, no gold, no accommodations, nothing. This would allow friends to battle. Or maybe a separate mode all together, that would open a private pvp server, with a much smaller area say maybe 4 islands and a fort, that could accommodate 4 Galleons, literally just for friendly PVP.

  • @ltgen-beast yes this could be a way to practice but everyone should be able to play it it should be free.

  • @detachedlamb476 Never said it should be charged for.

  • @ltgen-beast the guy who originally posted it said it should just making sure it would be free
