Forts should be toned down

  • Anyone else think that forts need to go back to being as rare as they were before? Yes server hoppers kind of killed things, but forts are more exciting when they are less common. More player pvp engagements and randomness. Now I look up see a fort and say to my crew "another fort is up". Before it was "Look a fort!". I feel like they added more due to players complaining all the time on here about getting ganked or not being handed free loot 24/7.

    What are your thoughts?

  • It’s fine like it is! Don’t change anything!

  • you will notice when they release new commendations they also up spawn rates for the things needed to make them faster to obtain during event.

  • @irhcsajr I definitely think they need to be tuned down but not to the degree that they were before. There is almost no point in doing a voyage if you can get on a server where people are not contesting the forts because the payout far exceeds that of voyages.

On the other hand, it used to be ~3 hours from the time the captain was killed to the time a new fort spawned. Each in game day is 24 minutes. 3 hours * 60 minutes means there was ~180 minutes between forts. Divide this by the 24 minutes that make up an in-game hour means we have ~7.5 in game days between forts under the old system. So essentially you wait an in-game week.

Personally I would be totally okay with making it somewhere around 3 in-game days between forts (72 minutes) or 60 IRL minutes (2.5 in-game days). If that proved to be too slow and killed the pace of the game I could also be convinced of a 30 IRL minute timer (1.25 in-game days) or a simple 24 IRL minute timer (1 in-game day).

These are all just my opinion.

  • @irhcsajr yes some people don't try and work for the loot some times

  • @irhcsajr I personally love doing the forts, especially since they added the new ones to be active.

For me it now makes it an option I can choose to do and I can join any world, no hopping or just hoping.

For me it would be keep it as is, just make the exchange rate with the skellie ship cloud a bit more often as I feel that one is less represented in the current system.

  • I still need to get used to the thought that there is a fort active but nobody is interested in it. Before we literlly had to fight for the fort for hours and now most of the people don't even bother with it. Its just weird to see an uncontested fort for hours now.

  • as @Barnacle-Blake said, we have new commendations now, some specific for Pirate Legends. And as such, when new commendations come out, it has become Rare's stance to increase your chances to acquire them by increasing the number of opportunities. During the Festival of Lights event, they increased lightning strikes as a way of making sure you could obtain that light.

Currently we have way more megs and more opportunities to run into the kraken than we did before. I believe these encounters will also be toned down along with skelly ships (though I really hope the current rate on skelly ships remains what it is) when the current adventure comes to an end.

  • They are currently perfect in their rate. Look, I get that one might feel that forts aren't special anymore, but they finally give you the chance to do something meaningful besides quests.

The same goes for the Skelly ships. Not interested in starting a voyage? Hunt some skelly ships. Fight some forts.

You can still ignore the forts if you don't like them, but the servers I've been on showed great interest in forts. Never had the chance to complete a fort without being attacked.

  • I think the spawn rates can be turned down a little. Like have one pop every 1hr and a half but still keep the skellie ships active and random.

  • @irhcsajr

I think they should turn it down alittle, but leave forts as priority over skeleton ships. That way every server you load into has a fort instead of the pointless skeleton ships. If forts become rare again, SoT becomes dead again.

Also, I’m not sure how server hoppers killed things. That’s all I do. Is it because they make forts actually difficult instead of free?

  • I’ve really enjoyed the current rate of skull forts. I like how they cycle around and change locations. I wish the skellie ships showed more often, or maybe simultaneously with the forts. It’s been nice not having to fight over every fort. And I love having all the forts go active now. The variety is great and some of the new forts make very interesting battles.

  • Yes, it seems if you have all these forts constantly active, people don't fight as hard to keep them or go to them cause another one is right around the corner 5 min later.

I think they should randomly spawn on the servers every 15-30 min.

  • At first I was excited about this change, because I always loved to stay on 1 server and try to become the dominant boat in the seas, but 3 hours between forts was pretty long to get anything like that going. So we were relegated to server hopping like most. Now that we have and endless stream of forts to take down, I like you am finding it lack luster, with very little contesting. While I do not want to go back to just straight fort hopping, I do think they need to spread them out a little so that maybe there is a mix of fort hoppers and one server crews battling over the forts to keep it spicy.

  • Been having big battles around forts not really getting any free ones myself. I really do like having them pop more often.

  • I would like seeing the ship battle more often and have the 30 minute despawn increased. People have had problems with it disappearing before they could start it.

  • I think it's fine since people were just server jumping until they found a fort anyway.
