Whirlpool/Maelstrom introduced within Arena

  • Feels like a perfect time to revisit a suggestion (I’m sure many have had) to introduce whirlpools/maelstroms in the Sea of Thieves!

Since early testing I’ve always yearned for more environmental dangers on islands (quicksand, traps, snares, snake pits) as well as out at sea (water spouts, rogue waves & whirlpools)

Wouldn’t it be great to see (maybe) some condensed maps introduced in arena (smaller chunks of the existing regions) with smaller boundaries to keep things close and intense?

Wouldn’t it be even more intense if whirlpools/maelstroms could become emergent? (before, during, after or even randomly during the treasure hunt)

Picture using a Helmball or Rigging Ball to send someone into a whirlpool while chasing/evading!

I can’t help feeling like a 4 grid whirlpool/maelstrom would intensify encounters and create new strategies with risk & reward in arena...

Suggesting sea currents that defy wind direction and if not observed and avoided, will trap ships in its area dealing some damage over time, making a ship a target for others, or creating some spinny-shooty battles if two (maybe more) ships are caught.

    What say ye?

  • Totally. Absolutely. On. Board. With. This.

The whirlpool in particular makes me salivate. There is something about the idea of two or more ships caught in a massive, vast water drain, where both ships are swirling around the inner concavity, powerful currents and centrifugal forces pushing them in great circles, at opposite ends. The crews furiously and frantically trying to regain control and hopefully sail out of the swirling, but also aware their enemy is at the opposite side, perhaps both ships firing at one another while going in circles...

It would be super exciting, and glorious.

I've argued before too that a whirlpool's edge could be used as a slingshot effect to shoot a ship quickly in a specific direction, the way a spacecraft uses a gravity assist when sailing past a planet.
