What can be done to stop stream sniping?

  • @chronodusk said in What can be done to stop stream sniping?:

FYI for everyone following this thread -

Joe Neate (Exectutive producer on Sea of Thieves) speaking on stream sniping in today's weekly dev update:

"...that's a little bit odd and it doesn't feel quite right to me..... It feels like inviting yourself to someone else's party without being invited....... We don't believe this is right..... We are going to be doing some work to help streamers combat this."

I figure they could potentially give an option in the settings to censor other crew's names. That seems to be the simplest option that I could think of. That way people aren't able to pull gamer tags from the stream and harass the players for an invite. I think that would be fair.

Streamers should be subject to the same peril that everyone else is. They shouldn't be targeted for streaming, nor should they get special privilege.

If they get sunk or spawncamped through an organic run in on a server, so be it. But it is wrong for someone to target a play session from the outside with the sole intention of interfering or turning the spotlight on themselves.

Exactly and that is the point of this topic is to make sure folks are aware of what it means and also to be mindful.

  • @triheadedmonkey thanks for closing the other tread and pointing me in the correct direction. I will repost my OP from the closed tread. This was my OP and idea to counter / stop stream sniping.

    Dear Rare,

As i watched your dev update and hear Joe talk about stream sniping and how to maybe fix it.
Its mentioned Rare is thinking of getting away the name when u are streaming.

But i had a diffrent idea:

    What about nicknames?
A nickname u cant join, u need to join gamertag.
Gamertag is not shown when we have nicknames.
    People cant stream snipe than.

Why 2 for the price of 1?
    It fixxes steam snipe.
It also allows us to use a diffrent name.

I feel like my pirate would be happy with a name like Captain Castaway. Altho this seems weird for my other games where i play in some kind of gameclan. We all have same pre-name in gamertag.

I do think this would be viable option for SoT.

  • Removing gamertags isn't going to help you. If you don't want to be stream-sniped, then there are options outside of the game you can explore (such as setting a delay to the live stream, or recording your video to share later). If someone wants to stream-snipe you, then they're going to do it regardless. They don't need to see gamer tags. All they need is to see where you are, and then hop servers until they manage to find you. It's not easy to do in Sea of Thieves, and takes time and effort to accomplish.

Someone joining your crew because you have an Open Crew, or because you allow your friends to join you in-game, is not "stream sniping." It is, however, a failure of the player to take advantage of the tools available to him/her to prevent such things from happening.

  • Every morning, NBC hosts "The Today Show" in New York City, where people gather and wait just to get their faces on television. This is REAL-WORLD "Stream Sniping."

If you don't want to be "stream sniped," then don't broadcast a live stream of yourself playing a game available to the public!! There are no private servers in Sea of Thieves, sans the test server(s).

  • @surveyorpete There is something to being able to engage with viewers during a live experience that is better for all involved than simply watching a pre-recorded experience.

I have folks in my stream who don’t own the game (for many various reasons) and watching while I play allows them to share the gameplay experience with me - reacting along with me when a keg skellie spawns right in front of me, for instance. It’s simply more satisfying an experience for some players and their community. The instant feedback we share is why I stream.

This doesn’t mean that streamers should have to deal with cheaters.

Every morning, NBC hosts "The Today Show" in New York City, where people gather and wait just to get their faces on television. This is REAL-WORLD "Stream Sniping."

Difference: NBC intentionally set up that studio for the express purpose of people gathering outside so that they can be seen on TV. It’s not stream sniping when you’re invited.

  • I dont watch streams and i first thought, deal with it, there is no special right you have or smth. what makes you special.
But the solution of hiding other Crews names is a good one and tbh. something that i would want to be a need and must have been enabled if you are streaming or recording.
I dont want to show up with my character name or gamertag in a video, no matter if stream or recorded.
Yesterday i was shot 5 times by a Streamer in another Game (WW3).
I also killed him twice, but honestly i dont want to be mentioned by name/gt in any sort of video, no matter if recorded or live streamed!

  • @wodyo

We ain't talkin about joining the streamer. U understand this yes?
If u stream, u take the risk. And u can change options as u want for either letting people join or not.

The problem is for the enemy crew. This is what Joe tried explain in latest dev update.

I dont care for stream-snipe as i dont see this as a big problem. I do understand why Joe brings this up. As therefor i posted the idea of Nicks.

  • Another aspect of this is that streaming is a form of marketing for the game - which is why developers allow it. And, so long as it doesn’t impact the regular gameplay of others, it doesn’t hurt to put features in place to minimize stream sniping. Many games have streamer options.

Perhaps having all of your notifications turned on is a bad thing?

I disagree with Joe Neate, in the extreme. They don't like that someone is joining enemy crews, just to get on the same server as the development team. I don't suffer from a lack of comprehension skills.

If Rare doesn't want people to [what is essentially] photo-bomb their streams, then they need to add a delay, or maybe livestream a recording.

Most of the "stream options" you see in other games are meant to avoid Real cheating in competitive games. The Adventure mode of this game is Not that competitive, and the original intent of Rare and Microsoft was to grow an online gaming community. Remember how proud Rare is about everyone making new friends on Xbox, thanks to Sea of Thieves? How is a "streamer" supposed to see gamer tags, to know who he/she is talking to in-game? How is JOE NEATE going to know someone is photobombing his stream again? Just going to wait for the surprise of a familiar voice?
