Fishing in SoT

  • I would guess that it has been discussed before and I do not know the level of interest amongst the community, regardless I will lay out some basic ideas. I think it would be a perfect addition to merchant alliance quests. Starting with basic fishing rods and basic bait to target smaller common species of fish, progressing to larger rods with a greater variety of baits to target larger more rare species. Variety could include different colors of baits, baits that target different columns of the water (topwater, mid, and bottom), even giving the ability to first catch smaller fish to then use as bait to target larger species. Different mechanics could include different baits working better in different areas on the map, different times of day, or different weather patterns.
These are just a few ideas I could expand on if there is any level of interest. Feel free to question, criticize, or expand on any of it. Fair winds and following seas.

The level of interest in fishing is huge, if we look at the poll conducted a few months back -

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/39577/vote-for-post-launch-content-poll-results

We do know that there have also been a great many hints, teases and discussions around fishing including the roundtable at E3 2018 - there's a good article here with a link to the discussion and some good suggestions for how fishing might work, along similar lines to your own post :)

My opinion how future fishing could be included in the game:

    Fish

    • Food type instead of finding this type of food in barrels around the world, we would need to use our rods to collect those.
In the inventory we could carry X fishes with us (let's say 5). Then we could store in the food barrel.

The fish wouldn't be a physical object. But would be more like the Cursed Cannonballs easing the servers on AI/memory task thing

    Quests

    • We could have "crates" of fish. Like those wired cages we can find around some Outposts.
As happens with other supplies, we would need to find requests for these deliveries inside barrels, diaries and bottles.
We could request the crate/cage at the merchant (when with an active related quest) or luckily around the world.

    Fishing Rods

    • Sailor Rod the basic and the one every one would find in their inventory

    • Set Rods we would be able to buy/equip rods looking alike other sets already in game (BilgeRat, admiral, sea dog, etc)

    • Carrying them would be possible everywhere, for aesthetic/photo/immersion purposes.

    Fishing Mechanics

    • Equipping the rod would be possible everywhere, but have no actions far from fishing spots.

    • Fishing spots would be every stability point near an ocean/water front (beaches, piers, rocks, ship/boat)

    • Fishing
we could use LT/Right Click (mouse) to throw the line.
Hold it untill fish bites the bait.
Prompt shown to press RT/Left Click (mouse) to pull the fish out. (We could have some vibration on Xbox controller as well)

If the Rod bend too much we would need to release RT/Left Click keeping LT/Right click pressed, avoiding to break the line and lose the fish, returning to the pull action when fish ease a bit.

If we release LT/Right Click at any point of this activity would make the fish to flee and the players to abandon the action.

    Simple, Casual and GameMechanic's friendly.

  • @gameshark-0p I am still not convinced that fishing in Sea of Thieves would be an enrichment. I wouldn't enjoy farming or knitting either. Catching pigs and chickens - that was close to the border. I already have any other housework in real life, so please leave it out of the game. Only activities close to the game would I enjoy - shipyards to remove shipworms, shells and snails from the hull, or deck scrubbing - for my sake, if it serves seaworthiness. But to fishing, I say ... no, no, no.

If fishing is included then I want to fish my way. Drop a powder keg in the water and collect the fish. Done, now move on to the next map. Lol

  • I hope there are commendations or achievements for killing pirates with fishing poles in their hands.

I don't play SoT for the pvp, but this would get me to start.

  • You will get commendations if another one accidentally fishes you :)

  • Not in the least interested. Just another distraction to keep a crew from looking out for rocks and other ships, and keeping the sails trimmed.

Sea of Thieves - not Sea of Fishers

  • Hi matey you guessed right about it being talked about before (Shameless plug) i myself has talked about it here - https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/73911/suggestions-more-food-items/12

it talks about more then just fishing but alos links to another post i made about fishing in its whole

  • I wonder how many ships will spawn and just sit at the outpost dock with people fishing?🤔

  • Help!

I learned to fish, I can catch a fish, but there is no key that will take the fish from the pole, I catch it, but I never actually receive it ( playing on PC using keyboard ) am I missing something silly?
