Volcanic Targeting

  • After playing Forsaken Shores for a few days, it seems that the Volcanic Eruptions in the Devil's Roar are not quite as 'Random' as one would think an eruption might be. My ship (often a small sloop) will get hit repeatedly at very strange angles even when hiding behind sea rocks. I think this needs to be toned down a little bit, this area is fun but eruptions are too frequent and suspiciously accurate.

(Honorable mention: Getting killed by a skeleton sniper whilst in the air from a geyser. I mean cmon...)

  • @deadrekoning I parked our sloop (SLOOP) behind a huge, huge rock and our boat was still getting slammed by volcano rocks. I feel it just doesn't matter where you are. I noticed when I am close to the island all the rocks are landing right near the boat and as I get further away they fire out further.

  • so you don't like sentient volcanoes with satellite missile guidance systems ? hmm weird wait till you found out it can happen every 2 minutes

  • I agree it should be completely random. I'd probably even be fine with an increase to the amount that it launches out if it was completely random. If it was completely random the frequency they erupt wouldn't be as big a deal but currently if you're at an island that starts erupting then good luck getting away

  • Yeah it’s quite frustrating. I’ve had my sloop sunk multiple times because I normally play solo and about 4 rocks will hit me at once and it’ll kill me leaving me unable to actually fix the ship and when I come back the ship has sunk, all my loot is gone, and I’m all the way across the map from where I want to be

  • If the volcano starts throwing rocks while you are on the island, there's a good chance your ship will be obliterated before you can get back to it. Sometimes there is a bit of a warning when the volcano starts smoking for a bit before launching missiles, and other times it will erupt immediately.

Its the most annoying feature of Devil's Roar.

    You are asking something impossible.

Just think the quantity of m2, and now the quantity of rocks needed to hit your ship 100% random.

  • @guepard4

You are probably right that it would be impossible to do but how it currently is it doesn't feel like a volcanic eruption it feels like a skeleton is hiding inside the volcano shooting mortars at you

At the very least I think it shouldn't be able to one shot you. Yes do same damage to the ship but not the player

  • @deadrekoning I agree on that the vulcanoes could be toned down a bit, or at least not erupt as often as they do. Maybe even give a little more time to get off the island.

As for the targeting of ships yeah It's a bit rediculous but it gets the job done. The whole point is not to get close to them with your ship in the first place so having something that kind of guarentees hits is a good thing.

But as is the vulcanoes erupt so often that you don't even get a chanse to park out of range and row a boat to the island before getting stuck there while your rowboat gets pummled.
And while you're there with the ship parked at a safe range you either need to:
A- Leave a Guard there against other players or
B- Park in close anyway and risk getting hit a lot.

Having a longer warning and longer periods in between eruptions would slove this a bit.

I personally don't mind too much at the moment, I sail with a full crew of 4 on a galleon and since the bottom deck (almost) never gets hit we just park it and tank the shots. But I can see a huge problem for sloop and brig players.

  • There is no way for them to have actual random objects and not have them be any danger to the players, because to do so you'd have to increase the number of rocks substantially so that they had a better chance of hitting someone - goodbye framerate! The better method would have been to obfuscate the shortcomings of the tech by adding an ash cloud that would make visibility poor. Make the volcanoes more about navigation and detection and not just a different cannon. The occasional rock in this case wouldn't be as bad as it could damage your ship but you aren't going to get repeatedly pelted and even if you aren't getting hit you have to deal with poor visibility, geysers and lava. Its only terrible when they are so frequent and accurate that you are constantly getting hit with them but since damage is the only function of the volcanoes, they have very little wiggle room for adjusting them.

I doubt they are going to change the way volcanoes work now, but they can hopefully tune the accuracy and frequency of the volcanoes to not be so annoying.

  • @deadrekoning

My buddy and I are sick of the whole area because of the Ship/Player seeking volcanic rock and the super frequent eruptions. ( We watch the volcano for any signs of the eruption but as of late there seems to be no indication till the last second.) I tell you we both feel like we spend more time sitting out of the blast area waiting for the eruption to get done rather than hunting for the various items on the island. Don't get me wrong. It adds a degree of difficulty to the game but come on. I am undercover and I can hear the rocks smashing overhead trying to kill me. On one voyage our ship was off the shore of this small island. The volcano next door erupted and before we can get back to our ship in the first like 2 minutes or something the rocks hit our ship 5 times, 5 TIMES. Like wow, talk about a homing missile. The ship sank but luckily we got all of our loot however the silk we had on board got waterlogged after we carefully had it up in the crows nest to protect it from damage.

So yeah the Volcanic Rock Targeting has to be toned down by a lot.

  • @themasterplan84 I agree with ya dude 110% I need randomness and immersion with my valcano

  • You all clearly didn't play in the roar when it first came out
