Cannonball Selection...really?

  • So how does one cycle through different cannonball types? If I have them all in my inventory, I don’t see them in my radial even if I have no regular cannonball in my inventory.

Am I missing something or is the only way to pause and go into your inventory? This new system is so ridiculously backwards.

You’re crushing my dreams for this game, Rare

  • @luxolites you can bind a key/button to cannonballs and it cycles through.

  • The default key for "Cannonball" is number 4 on your keyboard. Press it to cycle through cannonballs.

  • So it's officially a PC game now :(

    yep!

  • @luxolites Use whatever key/button you use for cannonballs to cycle through... BUT, I did notice you need to have at least one regular cannonball in your inventory in order to call up cursed ones. Perhaps, it’s a balancing measure, but it definitely takes getting used to.

  • It has to broken. This can't be what they intended.

You can assign the canon balls to the left or right on your d-pad on the Xbox controller

  • @xraylexx

Except I already have those directions bound to other actions, and I don't necessarily want to change that.

Choices have to be made then, selecting cannonballs though the start menu or using the radial menu for the other keybound options you have.

Don't mind him, to make things easier for selecting cursed cannonballs you can bind the cannonball key to a button on the controller which on keyboard is already bound on default.

As for the balancing of platforms they've actually doubled the controller sensitivity, which allows you much faster turning around. Bringing it closer to mouse speeds.

  • Hopefully, the current system is just Rare's first pass at it and they will add other options soon. A few possibilities would be to let us toggle cannonball types in the radial menu, to cycle types while on a cannon, and move the consumables tab in the menu screen to the front for quicker access.

I can't recall another console game that forced me into Settings for a step it didn't even bother to explain.

That's a solution, but not a good one. It's effectively penalizing a demographic of your player base for no reason other than the choice of platform they're using.

The real answer is either a more thought out inventory management system in the game, or mouse/keyboard support across both platforms to mitigate the impact to those on console.

  • @habiki The same thing occurs on the PC side. Sometimes, you have to reassign existing keybinds to accommodate changes. It’s not an Xbox vs PC thing.

I never said this was a perfect solution though, it's just a workaround that'll mitigate some of the annoyance. I do agree that it should be something that's incorperated within the inventory management as it's weird that the cursed cannonballs aren't part of that.

This has nothing to do with platform only with input, controllers just have less buttons. Computer keyboards have 100+ keys and have all the items keybound by default, which has been like this since the release of the game. I don't see why this suddenly has to be turned into a platform/input issue.

Adding mouse and keyboard support for poor inventory management seems like the worst possible solution. Although I have to admit that adding chatpad support to allow you to do more keybinds sounds like a nice extra option though :)

The difference being the limitation of two key bindings on the controller vs. keyboard. The issue is certainly exacerbated on a controller due to this.

  • @habiki Well, considering finger reach, it’s not so easy a task as one might think. I only have a few keys that I can reach without lifting my hand away from WASD - not a great thing in the heat of battle.

    *exascerbated.

I only meant from the viewpoint that a keyboard offers more potential keys for binding, the workaround you mentioned should be less disruptive for PC players.

I've grown accustomed to my playstyle, and I'd like to keep it. Perhaps if this new system weren't so cumbersome, I'd be more inclined to indulge a change. But I hate to abandon what works for me just to accommodate a 'feature' that clearly needs work (at best) or is hopelessly inferior to its predecessor (at worst).

That's a fair point. I still think I'd rather take the finger reach to a dedicated key where possible, as opposed to rifling through the extra menus in the heat of things.

And thanks for that catch. Autocorrect got me again :)

soooo i gotta remove my bananas or planks(my most needed in a pinch) or my bucket(i got rid of emotes for theextra button) or pause the game to select CCs? I agree with @Habiki way to penalize part of the demographic based on platform. Wouldn't 'changing weapons' while holding cannonballs work more fairly? Or another page to the item radial? Or not giving a keybind option to anyone so we are all at the same disadvantage? Or a radial while operating the cannons? Or hurry up with the Xboxtext chat so i can free up another button? I can comeup with 5 other solutions in 2 minutes, but sure, go with the 'most balanced one' thanks for keeping it fair, Rare....

To be clear, I don't think Rare's intention was to see how the differences with input methods would play out. I think it's an unfortunate byproduct of their first attempt at this system.

Ultimately, this is a good problem to have because it means the game is growing and they're developing new systems to handle the new content.

I fully expect they'll address this, and I'm sure they're already having conversations on how to improve it.

Development is an iterative process nowadays, and Rare is keeping their players in the loop better than most.

"Go with the most balanced one"? You do realize that nothing has been changed related to keybindings right? The only thing that was added was the selection of cursed cannonballs from the menu.

People really need to stop playing the victim role by putting this on "Rare is handling my platform unfairly". First of all this whole issue isn't even based on platform, it's based on input type. Second this option is just as bad for Kb/M users as it is for controller users because there's not way to quickly select which type of cannonball you can use.

The suggestion I did was just to use something that's already in the game (and everyone can use as long as they think it's important enough) as a workaround to mitigate the annoyance. The only alternative currently being the menu to manually select a cursed cannonball.

You're completely right that this could have been solved in a much better way, but do realise that coming up with solutions is always easier than implementing them. Instead of bringing up ideas as fuel to point the finger at how unfair Rare is, you could have posted it as a list of good suggestions on how they could improve it. Looking at the controller sensitivity increase should at least show that they're working on a more balanced experience for all platforms.

  • @fishst1ck but you have to press #4 to cycle through the CCs, right? Someone had to programme that, right? Because it wasnt there pre-patch. But no-one thought about platform balance and lack of free buttons on a controller while doing it?

The controller sensitivity is a little off topic, but im sure you have read your fair share of crossplay threads...its been said sooo many times, but increased controller sensitivity negatively impacts accuracy, much more so than on a mouse. Anyway, lets not turn it into another xplay thread. Have a nice day :)

Thx for the tips. Why is it not a default control on Xbox now?

  • @bran-the-ent
I’m on Xbox and hotkeyed the right dpad to cannonballs. I didn’t need a regular one to see my cursed ones.

    Much easier to manage now

  • @fishst1ck said in [Cannonball Selection...really?]do realise that coming up with solutions is always easier than implementing them.

This is a true statement, and is often lost in shuffle when discussing these things.

Spitballing on the whiteboard is one thing. Building and implementing the code, and seeing how it wrecks other systems in ways you didn't even consider, is quite another.
