Speed of ships

  • Can someone tell why bigger and heavier ship (galloeon) is faster than small and light ship (sloop)?

  • Sloops are faster against the wind, galleons are faster with the wind

  • Ships are the same speed. It's the environment that often gives one ship a speed advantage over the other. A sloop in choppy waters is going to get run down by the bigger ships due to dissipation caused by the higher waves. Where as a sloop on glassy waters will never get caught by the bigger ships if sailed correctly. Keep this in mind when sailing!
