AFK in the open crew
@pampasweed
The ability to kick is bad. It can really cause griefing. But maybe an afk timer that counts how far you've been moving so just have an autoclicker doesn't work. Report all these afk guys.It does suck to log into a open crew and find an afk'er or have one join you and go afk soon after starting voyages. A risk you take by messing with the open crew option. I don't demonize that afk person and I don't report them anymore because I just leave and make a new lobby. They don't get any credit from my crew's play time and they don't give me a headache because I just move on.
I've tried to consider the reasons a person would afk and I come up with a lot more practical reasons than sinister reasons. They may have been hanging onto their ship or lobby they've been in for a play session for whatever personal reason. Easy enough to let that person continue on with their business and move along.

how do you figure it's worse?
lets see both systems abused
-The current system if you did work for your loot you are guaranteed to get rewarded.
-In the vote kick system if you did work for your loot you are not guaranteed to get rewarded.
so this is a pick the lesser of 2 evils kind of scenario.
in both cases someone who didnt work will get the reward however in a vote kick system someone who spent hours working for a reward will get kicked and will get 0 reward.Honestly I prefer to to have an AFK in my crew getting reward instead of getting kicked after working for hours and not get my reward.

Because people don't abuse vote to kick systems that much so assuming it would be abused widely is silly. Especially given that closed crews already give options for reserving slots for friends that want to show up later... and they work perfectly for that. So having to worry about 1 person getting the boot last minute is not a worth while thing to care about, especially if you need 3 votes to do it, which means those 3 players would likely be friends waiting for someone else, far more likely they'd just play in a closed crew.
Worrying about 1 player afking and affect 3 players over the course of an hour, or worse actively sabotaging getting brigged or something and just playing music the entire time. 1 player can ruin multiple people's nights, and it is a widespread issue comparatively... when 3 people are unlikely to put themselves in a position to screw someone over... they'd have a closed crew or be 3 rando's that would have to agree to kick.
Vote to kick is the lesser of the two evils by a huge margin. And forget the rewards for a minute.. it's an absolute necessity if you want a functioning crew when dealing with random people. Open crew is a terrible right now and I can kind of understand why everyone solo plays... even though that's kind of ruining the game when other galleon's can seem rare.
Are you aware of what this option would entail? Seriously the community will want to become like the Csgo, the option of kicking is a bad idea, not only because they can take you out after working in an open session without reciving anything, but because they just promote the game alone or the closed sessions, something that could break the current game system, but if rare implement it for my own good, I also see the other side of the coin.

They won't abuse it? brah.... if 2 friends are playing together in an open 4 man crew and their 3rd friend logs on, they will vote kick one of the other 2 to make room for their friend. It happens A LOT! in other games with vote kick, I has happened to me, I've done it too. It is VERY common to vote kick to invite a guild mate or a friend.
If they add that in SoT, I wouldn't even blink and vote kick when my friends come online.

I didn't say it won't be abused. But the scenario your talking about won't even work if it needs 3 votes to kick someone. It won't cause as much of a problem as no vote to kick does because open crews is a hot mess right now. It's easily the worst experience in gaming I've had in years.
If they add a way to change ship + closed crews this will be sufficient enough to have flexibility for waiting for friends without needing to use randoms.

This is where your wrong, people with friends won't need open crews if done properly, they basically avoid them now any way. And your acting as if they are equal in terms of how often they affect players... Its not a trade of 1 afk player vs 1 player being kicked, your trading a fairly wide spread AFK + bad player problem making open crews fundamentally broken because people exploit not being able to be kicked vs occasionally a rando gets kicked mid voyage because a friend came online.. and closed crews are already a fairly good solution for.
Getting the boot because a group of 3 friends booted you when their friend came on is most likely not going to happen because 3 friends can just do a gal in a closed crew. Its what I do all the time now.

you do, I don't
I always try to have a max party so if i have 2 friends or 3 friends i will always open the 4th slot to a random. Currently if we have a 3rd friend that logs on, I simply tell em, ok hold on we finish this voyage (or hand in what we have) and leave the game and reopen a crew of 3 friends and 1 open slot for a random.if they add the vote kick... eh... I won't have to leave the game, instead i can just kick randos.

The ability to kick is bad. It can really cause griefing. But maybe an afk timer that counts how far you've been moving so just have an autoclicker doesn't work. Report all these afk guys.No ability to kick is worse in a team based game.. Much much much worse
how do you figure it's worse?
lets see both systems abused
If they add a way to change ship + closed crews this will be sufficient enough to have flexibility for waiting for friends without needing to use randoms.
you don't play many games do you...
open matchmaking is the bane of gaming...And it's never been this bad when there is no way to get rid of an unwanted person.
I would rather bring an AFK player and deal with the game with 3 people instead of ketting kicked becuase someone's friend came online.
And that's fine. There is nothing wrong with making room for a friend if your a group of people waiting for a friend. Thats not as big of a problem as how many afk'ers you end up with or bad players that can derail the experience. It's not a 1:1 comparison. Considering if you have 2 you won't be able to just kick them. And you can always turn in before kicking the person. Between you and me thats only 50% of a problem vs 100% afk issue.
There is a lot more room for mitigation based on who's doing the kicking vs the other way around.
Vote to kick will not introduce as big of a problem with abuse as not having control of your team.
@pampasweed Id put a timer on the brig, so if someone is in there say 15-20mins they get kicked or receive no rewards. I find alot of free loaders, who keep their controller active / character spins so they can reap rewards whilst others do work. Would the brig timer system be abused i.e. your other crew mates put you in there at the end of a quest / about to turn in an Athena chest so you lose out as you would get kicked...? Maybe, but if your crew brig you for no reason, they probably are not worth sailing with... You could also maybe introduce a brig limit per week? Maybe that's getting too confusing! Right now brigging someone is not a real deterrent, they just stay there, annoy you and claim rewards.
I'm always wondering where those stories from votekick-abuse come from; and one might think from those comments here, that apparently 90% of all votekicks are for unjust reasons. Yes, there are many out there, but: how many are indeed a case of abuse instead of just some angry player who actually deserved the kick?
I don't want to spark a discussion about what's justified and unjustified, though. Indeed, getting the boot when a friend wants to join sucks, but only if the crew isn't a jerk about it. Then it's just bad luck, I guess. Some teambased MP-games would be borderline unplayable without a votekick-option, if you don't have friends to back you up when needed. Like Burnout Paradise in Freeburn, Team Fortress 2 MvM-mode and Payday 2.
Now I'm not sure if a votekick-function here is needed with such small crews and you can still lock up trolls and griefers in the brig on the larger ships. So in that case, I would simply suggest an auto-kick if on the ferry or the brig for... 5 minutes?
@eibedionysos29 Considering My crew recently disconnected and 2 randoms joined and brigged me and sold all our stuff just a couple hours ago, this votekicking idea concerns me.
What actually needs to happen is there needs to be a brig timer. If a person is in the brig for more than 10 minutes they are automatically kicked. We had a jerk who wouldn't leave and stayed in the whole fort and got paid and then left. This kind of exploits happen and there is no way to control it.
