Dancing Cursed Cannon balls need a serious Nerf

  • I have to say currently doing Dancing crew is more than a little frustrating. especially if you can't find a ship to do it with and are having to solo it. you can hear water coming in the ship and know you are sinking while stuck over and over again in the dancing emote. As soon as you get mobility again...bam back to dancing.

At the very least, this Cannon Ball needs a serious Nerf, or the Ship should not be able to fire them continuously one after the other and should have a cool down.

I want to enjoy this content i really do and if there were more people about (even if they screw over the alliance, steal the treasure and break it before handing in) it would be better than being a lone galleon, stocking your ship, going over to the wilds and getting sunk because you have no ability to save your ship and no respite from being locked out the game.

I'm just confused that these issues were not better tested and picked up on before this level of frustration was unleashed on the community!

I understand there has to be a challenge and making it bearable for single ships loses the challenge for multiple ships, so maybe they should have had a system of exponential difficulty depending on how many ships are in the area when the battle starts and can be increased with each wave if more ships arrive.

  • To be stun locked for 3 whole minutes as your ship sinks is just stupid. To be taken out of the game with no control be it 15 seconds or 3 minutes is just a bad game mechanic. There is no skill when the skellies fire the dance balls one after the other with efficient accuracy and the whole crew are not in control as they are stun locked.

For one, the dance is far too long. Second, to have them stack while dancing every-time you get hit is an amazingly stupid idea. Third, to have the skellies fire the cursed balls one after the other, making sure you have no control of the out come of the encounter for 90% of the battle is a mindbogglingly insane game mechanic.

p.s Fourth, having he Hungering Deep Megladon join this encounter is so dumb I have run out of adjectives to even describe it.

edit Forgot to add, this is not fun at all. This is the first time I have seen members of my crew, myself included, rage quit the game, and we are all Legends, not some deck swabs.

  • Personal opinion:
In my view, it should never have been added in the first place in any way near the way it was implemented, this includes the other curses. Almost everyone I come across despise "the danc"e. It may not be in my place to decide what they must do and not, but... What the flip were they even thinking?!

  • I think it's hilarious.

    Better than getting knocked overboard.

  • @Barnabas-Seadog

It's comical for a whole 7½ seconds the first time. After that you realize it's a hamfisted and poorly executed feature that someone at Rare now has to feel guilty for suggesting, not to mention who implemented it, let alone the Lead who let it slip through

The joke really starts to wear off once you start realizing people are getting mad, rage quitting and uninstalling due to, in my opinion, poorly executed features with little to no end user input and serious lack of quality management.

And this is coming from someone who loves wild ideas in creative environments. Execution is everything.

  • I hear skellies cackling with laughter as they sail on a sea of salty tears.

    But that's probably just me.

Not just you. Don't forget Microsoft execs scratching their heads while force feeding millions into a triple-A project as Rare continuously under delivers in key areas, with players leaving left and right.

Welcome to the salt mine of diminishing returns.

  • @dutchyankee dijo en Dancing Cursed Cannon balls need a serious Nerf:

And SoT is a rushed work in progress where we the players are the lab rats.

And they bite, and infect the poor devs with strange illness like the "AI ships idea" that everyone ask for and today half the people hate (I dont want them and now I love them, oh, the irony...)

  • Only absolute rookie devs ever implement combat features that remove all player agency.
The fact that they thought forcing you into a stunlock was good fun tells you everything you need to know about the level of dev competency at rare.

  • The Cannonballs spash has a limited range, space out and at least one of the crew can go repair/ scoop. It's not perfect and I hope the radius/ duration will be reduced before we get our hand on it.

But that's one of the things rare can see, how effective are the cannonballs and how much they should be tweaked.

  • Hey @shell2k6,

We're always looking for feedback on the Forums, normally I just lurk, but I wanted to let you know that we've heard you all and we're currently looking into how we want to address cursed cannonball effects stacking in-game. Thanks for the thread!

  • @zz-emerz-zz
I would like to suggest some form of diminishing returns like in WoW on the CC effects of the cursed cannonballs.
In WoW for example, crowd control effects last shorter everytime they are applied, until you're eventually immune.

    So basically:
first hit = full effect duration
second hit = half effect duration
third hit = quarter effect duration
fourth hit = immune to effect until X amount of time without any hits has passed

With this, CC effects are still powerful enough to sink an unlucky crew, but players can't get stunlocked forever.

  • Honestly I think just reducing the rate at which the DD fire CC is the easy solution. The diminishing returns idea is great but remember this is Rare we’re talking about. They manage to botch anything as simple as a adding a B&K figurehead(remember the Friendly fire cannonballs and the Broken Athenas? :D). Do a hot fix that cuts the chance of a cannonball being cursed in half for the Dancing Demons and we’ll all be very happy. The other two crews are great and the Brigantine is a beaut(besides that lower deck layout). Happy sailing!

  • @zz-emerz-zz

    Thanks for replying.

I do love the game and I love the ideas and content released. I just feel it needs a bit of refining and some features need a change to limit the amount of frustration/lack of reward a lot of us players are currently experiencing.

Last night we sunk on the captains ship, after fours hours of battle on a brig with 3 players. (We did try to find other ships on the way up and found no one) we managed to keep two players in the battle area while our third quickly returned the ship and apparently that doesn’t count towards keeping the ships active and it dived.

Today we managed to complete the battle in a brig with the three of us and we were super c*****d for getting it done, we then had to log off with no reward because even though we stopped right on top of where the last ship sunk, there was no loot. we had a look for it around the area and couldn’t find it anywhere. It’s not easy finding loot in the seas and to drop the reward there is fine if your going to give us some indication as to where it is by placing birds above for example or having it spawn with the last ship you sink which I assume it currently doesn’t. I guess this might be a lack of understanding as to how the and when the loot is generated as this hasn’t been explained to us.

If these small issues area fixed, which equate to large frustrations. This would be truly awesome content. I love the ai ships and think they add a good threat to the seas.

  • Board the skellyships blast some holes in their hull and dont let them repair, boarders first smash all cannon skellys in a row with cutlass, thats it pritty easy for my Alliance.

  • We have literally just all been stun locked til our ship was lost. 3 cannon balls fired all at once with dance curse and only one of our crew became free for 5 seconds then back again to dancing. We watched as our ship filled up with 0 chance to fix. The same thing happened yesterday as an allied crew mate decided to kill us during the battle but this time only we got dance locked while they had free reign of the ship just cutting us down while we danced to the sounds of the ships death. It needs at least stun immunity so you cant be dance locked but chances are it wont be fixed until after the event.

  • @king-of-gibbons to be fair, I think Rare will address this fairly swiftly. A mod once said in the official discord during some of the lay by teething and it's always stuck with me :

"This may be frustrating for you guys who want to play, but for us who've worked on it for so long it's our baby."

And as a parent that sunk in for me. While we're frustrated at not being able to play this is a lot of time and effort for the devs. So while I don't understand how some of these features have snuck in passed testing, I'm sure the plethora of posts here will encourage Rare to change their babies nappy in this case ;)

  • @lankoran I hope so, im really enjoying the event but the times we are on we can only do the drunk ship and dancing ship. The drunk ship is very fun and the dancing one could be if its balanced a bit better with a couple of safeguards to stops the stun locks.

  • This is one of the most challenging thing in this game.... the only one challenging thing in the game... dont "nerf" it.... like you did with meg.

  • This particular curse is a terrible idea, there should be some way to break out of or play with the mechanic in effect.

The drunken effect is a perfect example of this. You can still play the game while the effect is active, it just makes it more challenging.

My whole crew has been stun locked in this nonsense and had to just watch our boat slowly sink.

IMO I don't think just nerfing the cannon ball is enough, it needs a complete rework or removal and replacement with a different curse

  • @ zz-emerz-zz
The player who drinks the grog can not use the animation of the dance. It would be good to use the grog as a defense against such cores.

  • I'm wondering now that a couple of days have passed and we're getting a bit more experienced on the seas, whether these are still as frustrating?

  • Although I have had fun playing the Cursed Sails...I was wondering how Rare would mess it up and spoil it...they constantly make skull and boneheaded decisions which suck the fun out of the game....bizarre choices which seem like common sense things to omit or change to most of us on the forum....but never to rare themselves...and they always lead to a strew of complaints and inevitable changes!!! SoT has so much potential, but Rare constantly make the game incredibly frustrating without fail!

So....we sail around in a Galleon searching for cannonballs and planks for over an hour and a half! We stock up on everything (even though most island were stripped bare, another niggling issue) Then we set sail for battle against the skeleton ships....

We get there and we instantly get struck by a dancing curse....every time the curse breaks...we get hit again instantly....

After 2 hours of sailing around, preparing for the fight.. searching for other crews.. which we didn't find...we finally get to the location and get sunk within 2 minutes because of Bull ....shark.

    Complete and utter bullshark....

I'm getting close....very close to uninstalling sea of thieves..It's starting to feel like a chore....a waste of time even.

I'm wondering now that a couple of days have passed and we're getting a bit more experienced on the seas, whether these are still as frustrating?

Well, experience won't really help with these dancing balls. If you get shot (and you will), they will always do the same thing, locking you out from doing anything.
If your ship gets shot and everyone is dancing, this can be the end. They can just spam them while shooting normal cannonballs as well until the ship sinks.

There is nothing skill related about them when they can snipe you from the other side of the map and spam them. Of course people can board their ships and prevent them from shooting, but all it takes is one ball to ruin everything.

The wheel lock and grog balls are different though. I got better at doing stuff while drunk but with the dancing ball, there is simply nothing you can do about it.
You should atleast have the option to "struggle" by mashing buttons in order to get out of it.

Anyway, I don't mind them as much when we have a big alliance going on. However, when you are alone or with only one more ship, these do feel a bit too hard.
They are simply not fun compared to the others.

  • @katttruewalker said in Dancing Cursed Cannon balls need a serious Nerf:

I'm wondering now that a couple of days have passed and we're getting a bit more experienced on the seas, whether these are still as frustrating?

    Yes.
    It is bad design.
Even though people can come to terms with it and work around it, it still sucks.
Devs should NEVER strive to wrest control from the player. It's a reason vanilla WoW had a bunch of complaints - stunlock is never fun for the player.
It is time that you are forced to not play the game.

So yeah, sure we might be used to it, but you can get used to haemorrhoids.

  • @katttruewalker yes, they're still frustrating as heck. We need to find a way to counter the dancing ships

  • I think, as long as they tackle the stacking issues all should be good!

They are a little frustrating but I have always had my ship go down while puking or dancing while still having a smile on my face and my belly hurting from laughter.

  • What happened to my crew (after almost 2 hours of.sailing between islands with no supplies and looking for barrels in the sea (so tedious and gruelling and not fun at all, most islands had literally no supplies in the barrels!!! None! Island after island! )

After that slog...we reached the battle and got hit by spamming dance balls. Two of us were repairing down below and couldn't move for 2+ minutes while the ship sank..The other two were on the top deck by the wheel, dancing away too...

Then when we finally got back to the battle....we had barely any Cannonballs cause there's no option to purchase supplies....so we were left with the options of looking around an empty server for non existent supplies again, or head to a battle with a cheating AI spammer with barely any supplies....

    So we just quit.

    FUN TIMES

  • @captain-fet just spent 3 hours fighting dancing demons and living to go to far out and not make it back in time before it started over . What gets me is I still seen the ships and do not understand what it started over but it did so yeah that sucks . The last one I needed and now no way to get it.

  • All of you ! The Update is Fine , Cursed Cannonballs are Great .

    Improve adapt overcome

    Get good!

  • I have experienced the same trouble with the dancing demon as it seems most of the others in this thread. And I am good. Do I think it can be beat? Yes, absolutely with several attempts if restocking and going after it I’m sure eventually it can be done. But it’s time limited both in the in game time of the month and campaign.
I’m sure this would be a lot easier if I could get a fleet of ships together at the time of the fight but it just so happens to be super late at night by the time the dancing demon is arriving and the servers dead.
I love cursed sails, but I do feel that the cursed cannonballs should have a cool down added to them. Repeated CC over and over doesn’t give you much of a chance other then pure luck.

  • @katttruewalker

They are difficult which is welcome challenge, but not impossible. We managed to do it in brigantine ;)

  • The vast majority seem to absolutely hate it. Rare knows and will hopefully rethink the whole approach in light of the unquestionably hard evidence of player experience in this.

  • You aren't meant to be able to solo these ships. This game isn't even meant to be played solo - it's an option, but highly ill-advised.

That's like complaining about not being able to solo a raid or world boss in any MMO.

  • Although the Dancing emote lasts awhile. My galleon crew managed to defeat this battle with a single 4 man crew.

However, I'll agree, the fire rate on the cannonballs was a little fast, especially if 2 ships were up and sailing.
