So what's the point of Row Boats?

  • Sure, sure, everyone's been asking for this feature to be implemented for quite some time now, but does anyone realise how menial this addition would be? Like seriously, does the game want us to park further away from an island just so we can lower a row boat into the water and slowly make our way over? The only reason I could think of to justify adding row boats into the game would be if row boats randomly spawn on the island as a way to get back to your ship which was mistakenly parked further away. Other than that, there really is no reason to add them in.

Now of course I recognise that I don't know everything, so if someone else has any other ideas for the uses of row boats than I'd love to hear them.

  • The new area they will add is gonna make us use them I'm sure.

Also getting loot back to the boat could be faster?

  • : galleon sinks
    ; rowboat deployed
: collects loot from sunken ship and puts in rowboat
: rows to nearby island with loot and waits for crew to return with new ship
    : rowboat justified 😁

  • From what I understand in forsaken shores, the very islands themselves are dangerous if you park to close the rowboat is so you can get to and from those islands safely without losing your ship.

  • I think it is going to be used to navigate areas ships can't fit in future dlc. I personally would use them for shipwrecks we pass that are fairly close to our destinations or to punch out multiple quests in the same theatre. You two go to shipwreck we'll head to crooked masts type stuff. And lets not forget a little private time, watching the sunsets with a lady friend while carousing around and drinking from a grog chest.

  • @spunkus-skunkus They clearly stated in update videos that there will be volcanoes spewing lava etc and you'll have to park your galleon out of the range of such dangers.
    Hence the need for rowboats.

  • they will find a lot of use im pretty sure about that.
how often is a shipwreck close to an island ?
2 or 3 can make the quest and you can just hop into the rowboat and head to the sunken ship, instead of make the mainship ready head to the sunken ship und raise sails again etc.

or when you had raid loot make a good run behind some rocks or an island load stuff into rowboat and head another way to get your stuff save.

it will be even faster for looting, 5 or more chests on wanderers refuge chests into rowboat instead of running multiple times back and forth.

or as Joe says put some barrels in it for a sneaky attack, because a rowboat is harder to see as a galleon xD

But the main reason will be the unstable area of forsaken shores, there will be areas that a galleon can´t pass maybe, or to help to scout the areas in the fog or something before crashing your galleon at full speed.

  • @spunkus-skunkus I have been asking since the alpha. The greatest reason I want it would be to park it on the shore and when I'm picking up multiple things on the island, ie chests, skulls, gun powder barrels, I can load them all in at once and head back to the ship. Also to bring them into the outpost. I play alone most of the time. It can take forever to go back and forth, sometimes 10-15 times, over and over. It's not going to be that great of an advantage if I get ambushed by a crew, but it will make my life alot easier.

  • Its an additional tool that everyone can choose to use or not depending on whether they feel it is going to benefit their crew.
Apart from the rowboats primary purpose upon release, being specifically for the unstable volcanic area, my immediate thought is it can be used as a rally point on shore for crew members to bring treasure and resources back to the ship, rather than stacking them on the beach for one of our crew to ferry them back one by one.

  • @it-was-VTEC Are we sure we can deploy rowboats from our ship and when ever we want?

Honestly, were does the sloop store a rowboat or does it appear magically?

  • @crimsonraziel Sloop has a loose rope at the back and a row boat will fit there too.
according to what they said in the stream the row boats will attach to each ship

  • @crimsonraziel said in So what's the point of Row Boats?:

@it-was-VTEC Are we sure we can deploy rowboats from our ship and when ever we want?

On the Comicon stream last weekeend on Mixer, the Rare team made the following statements about rowboats:

    1. They can be attached to every ship (one per ship)
    2. You'll find them in the world (not sure if just for the event)
    3. You'll control each oar independently.

Honestly, were does the sloop store a rowboat or does it appear magically?

My guess is in the back. There's a bit of a overhang on the sloop.

  • we need kinda those rowboats,

sure in the tower r cannons,or some catapults.

and here the ancient superrowboat ,look at the front its perfect for ramming other ships;)

  • Another thing that I think is cool about it, is that it will allow us to get close to other crews without having to risk our ships.
Let's say you want to talk to each other or even share some loot. You won't have to let them board you and risk being sunk.

    Kinda like the anchor? 🤔

  • This is a tweet from SoT HQ, note how it doesnt say you start out with one or anything. It just says it attaches. Maybe you have to find one washed up and have to repair it with planks before being able to use it.

Neate had stated that they want more progression in the game. The cursed cannonballs (and your current stock of normal supplies as well) is something you build up over the game. Progressing as it were to a fully stocked ship and having something to lose. I feel the rowboat would fit into this. Having something easily sinkable but also replacable would be nice.

As to its purpose. I feel many people have said it. Rowing to a shipwreck while the rest goes to an island, storing lots of chests in it (only having to bring them to the beach) and hauling them to the ship in one go. etc.

  • I can think of a few reasons I will use them.

Anchoring ship out of range of cannon fire

If ship sinks row to an island (potentially with loot) and wait for crew to sail back with ship

Splitting off from crew for challenges such as the current statues one so you can cover more ground

And as said above there’s supposed to be volcanoes coming via dlc

  • Load it up with gunpowder and use it as a weapon!

  • Several uses I see:

    • A way to move treasure to and from your ship in large quantities without having to worry about sharks
    • Load it with gunpowder and row it into the path of an oncoming galleon, sloop, (or soon Brig) to give them a rather unforgettable welcome party.
    • Use it to ambush/sneak attack other crews at islands as the rowboat isn't as obvious from a distance
    • Ship sunk, but your crew survived? Use it to ferry your crew and your treasure to the nearest isle or outpost.
  • @spunkus-skunkus
I am pretty sure the reason why they will release it with forsaken shores is because it will have some good utility there.
Maybe the shores are too impenetrable and we need a smaller boat to ashore and bring back things to our ship.

But in our current our I can see some utilities too.
Mostly to carry things from the islands to ship in one voyage.

It was said the rowboat will attach to the ship so probably you just need to carry treasures and attache it to your ship without unload it. And you'll carry thing with you all over... It's probably what I'll do.

In a way your ship would be doomed you just need to unattach the row boat and flee with all the treasures

  • you amass treasure from an island and row it altogether back in one go instead of swimming back and forth loading one by one

  • It'll help solo players out alot cuz going back and forth between your ship gets old fast.

  • They clearly stated in the forsaken Shores DLC they will be needed to access Devil’s Roar a volcano that has lava and fireballs spewing so you can't bring your ships close thus using row boats to get there (not sure if its forced or not but they said it will be needed)

  • Hi! As this topic is more of a discussion, than feedback or suggestion, I've moved.

Could you imagine coordinating the rowing pattern with all the noobs the boat would require :D

  • islands in forsaken shores will sink your ship if you park close hence we will have row boats

  • @spunkus-skunkus

I wonder if they will be equippable from the shipwright and optional rather than a feature. Someone mentioned the sloop earlier and I don't think it would look right with a rowboat bobbing along behind.

I think it's going to be very handy in Forsaken Shores and for mass delivery of items from an island to the main ship instead of having to go back and forth with multiple crates or chests. Might make merchant quests a little quicker?

  • Another handy use would be if you have spotted a galleon parked at an island and you need to test the waters to see if they are friendly, rather than risk your own sloop or galleon you could row on over and try to make friends or an alliance with the galleon. Never giving away the location of, or risking your own ship.

  • @musicmee or just bringing them an explosive surprise 👀

  • @skulliah There is that ;) Well that's the backup plan anyway!

  • Rowboats would already have a good use today, at least since the barrel-holding skeletons showed up.
Normally i park my sloop as close to an island as possible and park it without the anchor dropped.
This worked fine, until the blast of a suicide skelly gave my sloop a push and i saw it slowly getting away from the island, just a little bit quicker as i could swim until it slows down again. Sometimes it even got damaged badly by 2 suiciders at once.
Parking a bit more off shore always means swimming and risking a shark attack, which is annoying if you have to dig up 5 chests solo.
Dropping the anchor will not help against explosion damage, so i rather risk my row boat on the shore than my sloop.

Apparently rowboats won't be automatically attached to every boat. So while this is a good example how it will work, they did state that you have to find them in the world and attach them to your boat.

  • @katttruewalker

I think row boats will more likely be like the kegs or the upcoming cursed cannonballs, you'll only be able to find them in the world. Why? Because if you loose them or someone destroy them, you'll need to find another one. The devs really want us for Forsaken Shores to get prepared before going there, finding a row boat could be one of this step :D

The comic con video they state that you will have to find them in the world and attach them to your boat. So as of now it seems like we don't automatically start with them.
