I'm a bit concerned about the idea of breaking your alliance. What if you do a fort together, and then as soon as the captain is down the other crew sink you even though you've been agreed in Alliance this whole time? Or even worse, doing an Athena quest and as the final map spawns, your Alliance is broken and they sail to where they now know the Athena chest is and take it for themselves.

Well, concerning the last point, they will only be able to dig up the athena chest if they are in an alliance. Unless the map is shared, even if they dig in the exact point of where it should be, they won't be able to dig it up.
About breaking alliance for convenience, I'm sure they have something planned already, otherwise players' feedback will probably help improve upon the existing system.

Map doesn't need to be shared...they said you can go and dig up another groups treasure for them....if you break alliance first...then I suspect you wouldn't be able to then.
@dragonsire2016 As in, shared through the alliance. (i.e. being able to cooperate on the same map) ^^
Has anyone seen anything about the conditions of breaking an alliance?
I'm assuming that if you are sharing a fort / voyage, then you get the loot split at its conclusion when the loot is handed in. So in the case of a fort, even if you are sunk by your "allies", you still get your split of the loot when it's handed in.
But what actually constitutes breaking an alliance? Is it attacking an allied ship - because that is going to happen. Is it a UI choice - "Leave Alliance - are you sure?" or is it going to be changing your pennant from the allied one to the Jolly Roger?
doesnt sound like there is any advantage to NOT being alligned, sounds broke af, i dont see this being a problem unless it ends up working differently than how they explained it in the video.
Why would i ever want to break an alliance? i have extra back up in a fight now, share loot, rep, literally NO incentive not to be in one. Hello pve servers
