Let's talk about Crew Members who Choose not to Speak

  • A large portion of my Sea of Thieves experience revolves around other players being cooperative by using either in-game chat or microphones to communicate with me, and the other members of my crew; seeing as I don't have many dedicated SoT friends to play with, I always use my microphone to talk with other players and I expect others to do the same as well. Ever since I started playing Sea of Thieves I always thought that the preliminary requirement to join a galleon by yourself was to have a working microphone or a keyboard (for typing); some would consider these helpful tools whilst others believe that it's absolutely necessary - I am one of those people.
You'd think that seeing as Sea of Thieves revolves around team-play (referring to the galleon) that almost all players would have microphones, but you'd be wrong; I spent over an hour (and that's not an exaggeration) trying to find a crew that at least had one person using a microphone, or even responding to me - over an hour! Call me entitled, but it's incredibly annoying having crew members running around like headless chickens without an objective; I'm talking about those who raise the anchor as soon as they spawn in, others who don't vote on voyages, and people who are just generally unhelpful or trolling. If you're new to the game, these things a fine to do and completely acceptable, and I'm willing to educate new players on how the game works regardless of how clueless they are... but how are you supposed to teach people who don't listen, or play with people who act like they're a one man army?

I understand that everyone has their own motives and I know that some people simply don't have access to a working microphone, but should the experience of the majority be tainted by the few who choose not to communicate?
I didn't come here just to complain however, I came here with a suggestion which has been requested time and time again: Put players with microphones into the same crews.
If you want to be uncooperative and unhelpful then fine, be with people who have the same idea, but if you want to cooperate and collaborate with your crew (which is what you're meant to do) then you'll be matched with people who actually want to succeed in the game.

So what does everyone else think? I've always been under the impression that people want to play with others who use microphones, and am I wrong? If you genuinely prefer to play with crews who don't talk then I'm keen to here your reasoning. This is my opinion, and I know others have their own, so let's all have an actual discussion about this issue (if you can call it that) without being demeaning to other players - remember, everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

P.S Again, I'm not throwing shade at people who don't use microphones because I'm sure you have your reasons why; I'm only annoyed with people who don't communicate at all.

  • @spunkus-skunkus I agree with some of your post, this game does require teamwork, even between a sloop duo.
I used to server hop at least 6 times every game session to find a crew , anybody with a working mic.
I since learned that it's not always the case of people not having mics but rather the in-game chat feature is buggy at best. You often need to turn on / off the "Push to Talk" option. So even if they appear to be muted, they may not be.
Then there are times when others are talking non-stop that I realize that I hadn't got a word in for hours and sometimes I think that maybe I should mute them. lol
My regular's wife often joins us and she never uses her mic because she plays during work (night-shift) and doesn't want to disturb her patients. But she can type just as fast as any spoken word.

It's unfortunate that the game itself doesn't have it's own "Find A Crew" feature like the Xbox app's find a group. Even though each patch note includes how they have it covered via Xbox App, Forums and Discord.

We're four months into the game now, so the matchmaking should no longer be placing new comers together. One new comer to the game per crew would help them learn much faster than four rats on a sinking ship.

  • I do agree that there is a very big number of players that do not co-operate or try to in the least, I can even tolerate playing with children if they even talk or try to understand intructions or objectives, but a lot of people act like bots, not responding or interacting with anything.

I always recommend avoiding matchmaking because it doesn't match you with players at your level, merely filling in slots with people that want to play regardless of level.

So for that take SoT official advice:

  • I have three personal friends that play this game. We are all busy people that work weird hours, so it's pretty rare that more than one of them are online at any given time. If one of them is on, we sail duo, otherwise I sail by myself. Even in a crew though, at least since THD, we strictly use game chat, as push to talk is not an option for us Xbox players. I dont even bother with random matchmaking anymore because of this lack of communication, and most of the people I find that actually do use a mic are, shall we say, less than pleasant.

I totally get you. I think they come from an insignifanct h***s country and cannot even understand English, so they are just at a loss what to do.

Or maybe its just the endgame indoor generation who holds so much trauma and bitterness in their heart that even though they still want to participate in social games and society... they are just that far too afraid to even speak cause society was not that kind to them before.

In the last scenario I can forgive this people. But they are still annoying. :)

  • use looking for groups, discord or the forums to find a crew that meets your expectations.

they are 'looking into more ways/tools to group up' according to this video:

    (about 3:30 in)

  • Keyboard is not a option for console players in this game at this point. A few other games out there alow you to type in game but for some reason it was not and hasn’t been enabled for consoles

  • The real problem is when xbox player cant pushtotalk and you hear every sound around his console(in the worst case you hear echo of yourself). Add push to talk option for xbox somehow or something to change mic sensitivity.

  • @ant-heuser-kush [mod edit - name calling] who will learn newbies if everyone leave them alone?

  • but should the experience of the majority be tainted by the few who choose not to communicate?

    Do you even read yourself?
I had some broken headphones for like 2 months. It wasn't my choice. I do use a mic now, however if playing in a galleon (which I normally do not) I say things like vote "aye" for "" " and they all communicate. Don't just blame others for experience.
BTW I hate trolls too, they just spawn in and drive the ship to wreck it. Or take the treasure and drop it on the water. That happens with people who have mics too.

  • @schelmflosse300 I seriously can't believe what I am reading on this comments! So you can't forgive some one who doesn't speak English? Talk about first world problems!

As a man I never knew once said " Einsprachigkeit ist heilbar. "
Something along the lines of speaking only one language is curable.

Oh well maybe Rare should have just given Servers for each Nationality now?
But yeah I expect of others what I can do myself.
People should not drop below my level.
Honestly it is not that high.

I don't think of myself as too big of a deal so why can people not do it?
No joke I am such a lazy bum and even I can do it.

  • Or how about people reading "mike required" in your LFG-post, join your party...and then message "don't have a mike"

  • oh yes, they 5uck so hard. But... If you look @ discord, there you find plenty of friendly pirates who all got a mic and are able to use it. I don't use the random crew function any more, because there is too much idyots out there. Use discord and get happy ;)

  • @spunkus-skunkus I understand what your saying and if those people play in open crews it seems logical that they are more sociable. Personally when I play I'm in a closed crew and in party chat also my pirate chat hotkey is replaced with the banana hotkey but I still wave or communicate in some way. As for other people there could be a whole host of reasons mainly language barriers, age, or negative past experience. It could be that they are socially shy which very common among people. I suppose my suggestion is just stay cool with it explain to whoever that you prefer to communicate over mic and if they don't then just boot/find another game. Personally this is why I prefer playing with people I know because at least then we can work efficiently.

  • @lord-danielw If you read my statement carefully you'll notice that I stated "the few who choose not to communicate" And again at the end of my OP I stated that I wasn't throwing shade at people who don't use microphones, just people who don't communicate. If you don't have a microphone then fine, it's not my place in the world to demand that you get one; but if you don't have a microphone AND you choose not to communicate or cooperate, that's when you end up in my bad books. Like you, when I join crews without microphones I ask if they can hear me by telling them to say "aye" in the chat, and if they don't respond, then I'm out - simple as that.

"Don't blame others for experience" - this statement I couldn't disagree with more; the people you play the game with, are the people that influence your experience the most, and if those people are not communicating, running around like headless chickens, and being uncooperative, then that ruins the experience for me and many other players.

This is why I was suggesting the implementation of an option to join crews with microphones; that way people who want to communicate in the most efficient manner can do so, whilst people who don't have a microphone can go about playing SoT their own way, with people who're in the same (or similar) situation as they are - not owning a functioning microphone.

So for clarity I wish to state again: I don't care if you don't have a microphone, I only care if you're not communicating. If you have anything else to say, I'm more than happy to respond; but if we never speak again then I bid you a good day/night.

  • ps:

I do not care about microphons but typing is not too demanding isn't it? 0:-)

  • A crew that don’t communicate is destined for failure and that’s a fact!

Go ahead and tell us all about your wonderful adventures and successes....

  • Crew members that do not use a mic OR use the in game text shouldn't be playing Sea of Thieves. They have no team skills and they are the cockiest forum members too.

  • @spunkus-skunkus I think I took it the wrong way then, but I just see (and hear In game) people complaining. And you asking to separate thoose who don't own a mic from thoose who do.,feels like you don't care if you ruin or discriminate againts them.
Either way. Those who don't communicate even in game chat are either trolls or not English speakers. Just the only difference is that trolls harm the ship and crew. While the others don't mean to make the game slower and just wanna play.
I suppose the only option I recommend is to join a discord group and sail with the group (at least through discord mic).
Sorry if I jumped on my horses but for me, what you are asking is still a one view request. Have a good day for you too :)

  • @schelmflosse300 at first I thought of you a different way. Then I... Hahaha ah hahahahahaha yeah, a lot of people ask that, specially Latin and Portuguese speakers (I suppose others too, but I'm only close to the 2 I mentioned) I like encountering French, Australian and Canadians on the seas tho. It has been my dream they add nation flags and seeing Spain flag battling French or British flags on galleons. But anyway... Yeah... Highly requested... Rare...
    :)

  • Hi! For some reason my voice in game is really quiet so ppl normally dont understand me. If they invite me to a party things go just fine. I wish I could fix the volume problem in game. I dont know if it what happens to the ones that are not talking to you but try to invite them to a party. If nobody joins you, then move on to the next crew.

  • With all 'forementioned
    points that ye here
    hitherto have said;
    The Best legend'ry pirates
    Eye with my days
    at 'Sea have sail'd;
    Are silent as the grave
    Yet still no word
    is left unsaid;
    &In the wake behind
    the ever endless
    Trail of dead..

    Xx.

  • @spunkus-skunkus it seems your problem is with inexperienced players moreso than people who can't (or won't) voice chat.

There was this one time I had a crew member who was talking constantly in voice chat, saying things like "we can't sail north because that's where the Kraken is", then he got ahold of the wheel. Since he wasn't listening to anything anyone was saying to him (at ineffectual gunpoint no less), we had to brig him.
My point is while being able to quickly communicate with your crewmates is immensely helpful, it you it won't prevent you
from getting the odd duck who skips around the ship dropping the anchor or generally being a hindrance.

In any event your suggestion is likely to be implemented (eventually) as I believe they're looking at making a "Microphone Required" group option.

  • @jacqui-o-blades From my knowledge of jumping between crews without microphones, almost all are unorganised and clueless with no idea how to work cooperatively; furthermore, almost all crews that I've been on with microphones have been extremely successful at PvP and PvE as we can get our point across much easier and designate roles to certain crew members of our ship. Now in my statement I'm not saying that ALL non-speakers (I couldn't find a better word to distinguish them sorry) are incompetent, in fact quite the contrary; however the matter of fact is that crews without mics are far less successful than crews with mics. And yeah, there will always be the odd duck who has no idea what they're doing and can make or break the outcome of the crew - BUT, I'd much rather have that person on the microphone so at least we can teach them and hear their side of the story.

  • Not sure if it was a bug or just the way the guy had his mic setup but all the ingame text chat he used was spoken with an audamated guy voice. So when he said let's head to the outpost or drop anchor or whatever he said with the wheel I heard it in my mic. Rare should really implement this if not already as this happened yesterday for me and it was super nice having the text chat aautomated into voice.

  • Most of the times I play my crew don't speak English in which I find no point in trying to communicate with them.

  • Even people with mics or who text chat can run around like headless chickens, or be massive trolls. Had 2 other legends in a pug galleon once, the 4th guy was a troll, with a mic. Sent him to the brig, I had long since muted him, but apparently he kept talking trash, we just turned in the loot we had gotten and called it a day.

Played with I guess a Russian or some such pug in a sloop a few days ago, we never said much to each other besides "I'm dead", think they swore in Russian on the mic once, thus my guess. But beyond that in our sloop we just sailed around sort of aimlessly, killed a reaper sloop that wanted to fight us for some reason, we didn't have any loot because aimless pug.
Communication or not, it's just about who the player is. Talking can be a positive or negative, it's all fairly random.

  • Hi everyone,

As this thread is over two years old I will be locking it. Please create a new thread on the subject if you would like to continue the conversation.

    Thanks!
