Just lost loot in server transfer!

  • I had just finished an OOS quest and had 4 villainous bounty skulls to run to my sloop, I'd dropped off one and turned around to grab the other 3 I'd left on the beach when I was migrated to another server.

"The world is changing, new dangers there be
Between boundless sky and treacherous sea
On rolling waves with sails unfurled
Ships come to plunder this new world"

All 3 of my skulls were destroyed/removed/not transferred with me, so there goes 30mins work. Not too impressed..

  • @draggonblade damn! Im sorry to hear this, literally imagined going thru it and its painful. Wondering if some lucky group might get put into ur old server a find a few skulls.

  • @draggonblade its happened to me a few times its very annoying.

  • What is server migration and why it happens? And how do you know that a server migrates?

  • @king-deka Ahoy matey!

Server migration is when a server comes to the end of its lifespan and is now empty (just you left) the server moves you to a more populated server.

You (and players on the new server all) will get a popup riddle on-screen warning you of new dangers on the horizon when this happens.

  • @draggonblade Maybe we can convince Rare to implement a change where all loot items within a vicinity of the players being migrated will migrate with them?

Not sure how that would impact server performance but if it is minimal it might be a good trade off.

  • @musicmee you’re whole ship gets moved? Or you’re Character only? You get moved on the same place on the new server? No loading screen?

  • @king-deka Yup it's not obvious but yes.... you, your ship and everything you have on board just gets merged across to another servers map in exactly the sample place, heading in the exact same direction. It works just like magic to keep the server fresh and active.

  • Cheers for the replies lads, glad I'm not alone on this one!

@xcalypt0x what's the best way to bring this to the devs attention?

I feel like I rarely see a dev post on this forum (maybe I'm not looking hard enough?) - but it certainly doesn't make me want to play the game when things like this are happening!

Between this and the AMD crash issues (which also causes loss of all voyage progress and loot earned), I feel like I'm lucky to get my loot back to an Outpost 1/3 game sessions.

  • @draggonblade You don't see them because the devs no longer post here as far as I know. Reddit/twitter would probably be the best way to go if you are looking for a response from them but it might take some luck as well.

  • @xcalypt0x @DraggonBlade

I would also post this as a support ticket using the link below- it may get closed quite quickish with a standard reply but will more than likely get added to the "to check" list.

They can then check the telemetry and work out if the distance at which you are able to travel away from a fort before any merging occurs should be larger.

  • @Musicmee Thanks for the link, filled out a support ticket as suggested.

I'll update any/if response I get here, for any one interested.

  • This actually worked in my favor once. I was on a gold hoarders voyage on Shark Bait Cove, with several Xs on the map. I’d just finished digging up a few seafarers chests. I was hauling one back to the boat when I was migrated to another server. I dropped off the chest I was carrying and returned to find my other chests had vanished. At first I was highly displeased, as one might imagine...until I realized my chests had been reburied. Luckily they weren’t far apart, so it didn’t take long to recover them. The crazy thing was, the game had even reburied the one I carried back to the ship. Hmm, okay. But then when I checked, the first one was still there, so I actually got an extra chest out of the deal. I considered that compensation for the inconvenience. Too bad they weren’t captain’s chests. 😊

  • Never leave treasure on shores etc.... Kill a captain, load its skull! Same with forts. Don't empty the vault unless it is to your ship. If it's on your ship it's safe.

  • Me again, got a reply - posting here for those of you interested.

    "Ahoy there,

Our Test team is aware of this issue and are working on a solution. We hope to resolve this in a future update but we aren’t able to provide compensations for these occurrences.

Thank you for your report and for understanding.

  • @draggonblade I feel you. Happened to me on saturday twice after digging up athena chests.

  • That's a bad turn of events.
I've rarely seen a migration (only once) in my many hours of play so I guess It's quite rare to migrate servers?

OOS quests are a drag to do solo. Get some friends in on the party and you'll never have a skeleton group last longer then 15 minutes. (and the added bonus that 1 person can grab and transport a skull making it so migrations don't take them away).

  • It's really simple. All they need to do is add a timer instead of merging right away. Give a 5 minute warning / timer so that way players can either rush loot to the boat or wait to start a quest until the server merge. Problem solved.

  • @draggonblade a dit dans Just lost loot in server transfer! :

so there goes 30mins work. Not too impressed..

    text alternatif

  • That sucks man, sorry you lost your loot. Me and my wife tend to leave our skulls on the ground until we clear them all, something we may need/want to change now after seeing this.

  • I was on a mission with my friends, everything was fine until server migration..
The mission has disappeared, fortunately, the items have been left, 2 hours of playing were wasted because the developers have come up with server migrations.
Maybe the migration itself is not bad, but not that something disappears ...

  • Interesting… Just last week I completed a fort in a solo sloop, and I became excessively nervous about getting out with my payday. So I packed out a few of the best items and sailed for Plunder outpost.

Along the way a Kraken took me… But, before my ship was sunk, I was able to load all but two loot items into my rowboat and beat oars for shore, making it in.

After catching a mermaid to my ship, I began the long sail back to the fort to see what remained. On the way… Server Migration. Between rowing for my life, and sailing back to the scene of the crime, I was too late to find the lost loot floating where the Kraken had taken me. But perhaps that was a loss to the server migration.

Curiously, the remaining loot was still there under the fort! A nice surprise, and I did get the rest of it turned in with success!

  • And just think. People want a crossplay toggle option that will make server merging more frequent. Fantastic!

  • @draggonblade I recommend the following tip - Always keep your anchor raised. The game will not merge the server you’re in until the anchor is dropped. This can be difficult with the new ship mechanics as skeleton cannons can shoot your anchor and drop it if you don’t catch it in time, but in that scenario, you most likely already have all of your loot on board.

  • Dropping anchor due to the following Forum Rule:
