Horrible performance on Dell XPS 9560 with GTX 1050 4gb

  • Hi everyone, I have a Dell Xps 9560 with an i7-7700HQ@2.80GHZ, a Nvidia gtx1050 4gb GPU and 16gb ram @2400mhz. The Geforce experience app suggested me to run the game at 720p (which is strange because I played easily on Full HD games like THe Witcher III, Far Cry 5, Dark Souls III and so on...). The problem is that even at 720p, the is not smooth, the sea animation run at like 15-20fps... Is there something I can setup to improve performances? I think it's impossible that I must play it @720p and still experience 20fps...

  • @personalc0ffee GPU's driver is updated and my wires are hooked up. I play regularly the other games i mentioned with no problems

  • What happens now is that for the first 10 minutes the game runs at 60fps stable (I use the fps limit to 60). After 10 mins the game immediatly drop to 15-20 and never go up again...

  • @carlostagno Strange question but have you noticed if your fans alter their speed when the FPS drop occurs? I had a similar issue once related to overheating.

I know you said this doesn't happen with any other game but a rendering/ optimization issue may be causing this to kick in.

  • @personalc0ffee I looked at it, and set to run permanently gtx1050, but nothing changed, still running at 15-20fps

  • @musicmee no fans altering speed during the fps drop

  • @carlostagno I have a 1050ti and it runs fine on Legendary (fluctuates between 30-60 fps) on 1080p.

Dropping the settings in-game to below legendary should smooth it all out if you want it at 60fps.
(CPU is a Ryzen 3 1300x for what its worth)

  • also if you are running streaming/recording software at the same time it can chew up some resources

  • @personalc0ffee possibly, can't imagine most laptops have great cooling for running a game at full tilt, despite what they may claim

  • I have also found screen sharing software can also suck up some GPU power so close stuff like VNC or TeamViewer so double check those too.

It's also worth blasting your fans with some compressed air to give that thing a bit of a clean so if that helps.

  • @carlostagno

will be able to monitor temps and fan speeds to see if it is a thermal issue.

Unless you are playing in a well-ventilated space with the laptop on a flat open surface it will likely overheat. So if you are playing with it on your lap, for example, the fans will usually not get enough air

  • @personalc0ffee I properly cleaned my laptop 1 month ago...
I use the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to check temperatures and to undervolt my pc to keep the maximum performance and lower temperature possible.
I have to say that when I play SoT the fans are not even at their max speed (like when I play with The Witcher III)... so I don't think it's a thermal issue...
@triheadedmonkey when I play SoT I don't use any other application on pc, I just close everything before I start, so no screensharing.
I use my pc for job, color grading and transcoding heavy video files, so I can tell you this pc can handle huge stress. That's why I'm asking here, because I could have never expected to have a performance problem like this on a game graphically simple as SoT...

  • @carlostagno then I have no idea what else to suggest.... BIOS fully up to date? HDD issues? I'm clutching at straws but worth checking I guess. Sorry, all out of ideas :(

  • @carlostagno I would try that software linked above as this may give us a clue as to why Sea of Thieves is taxing your machine so much. Like I said before it could be a simple optimization bug/issue. Is there possibly something you do at 10 minutes in which cases this to happen?

This software will at least give you a visible prompt when things are starting to get a bit too taxing - even if its an issue from the game's perspective.

  • @carlostagno this is a long shot, but when the game's runing, is the sound ok? I know someone had problems due to soundcard drivers or something and it somehow caused the game to perform terribly.

  • @triheadedmonkey Yep, Bios up to date, hdd perfect state, I have no other ideas neither :(

@Musicmee I'll try as soon as i can that software. About the fps drop, it happens around 10 mins of game and suddendly, even while standing still on the boat...

@sir-lotus yeah the sound is perfect during the game, before and after the fps drop.

Thanks to you all for the time you are spending to help me, hope it will help others too

  • @carlostagno No worries at all matey! Let us know how the fact-finding goes... and well try help some more if we can. Thanks for sticking with us.

  • @carlostagno no worries, hope you get it sorted

EDIT: just for the sake of suggesting everything... checked your RAM? if you have added RAM to the machine it might not be seated properly or be 'matched' with the other stick or timings could be messed up but again only included for the sake of including everything haha

  • @carlostagno using a SSD or hdd? Antivirus running? Updates in background, could anything best of luck finding it. 2.8 is a bit low, can u over clock it to 3.2?

  • I have no advice, sorry... I've got myself 2 Nvidia 970's and an Alienware 1070 (laptop) and it's something in the optimization, I've tried everything to correct the issues of dropping FPS and on the Alienware...strange grinding of animations.

It's not just an FPS drop. I am used to FPS drops, the FPS drop I can deal with and chalk up to optimizations or minor issues on my end. It's the strange almost like rubber-banding grinding that happens on some servers.

I'll actually join servers and it's like playing on a windup toy that has a bad gear itll run fine for a moment then slug...then speed up and run fine again only to slug... at intervals that are almost predictable and are always short term.

But often, swapping servers, without game restart or anything, actually does change that.

This, coupled with Rare's admission in almost every set of patch notes that optimization is an ongoing process, leads me to believe that there is more going on in the realm of server de-sync with certain players and cruddy processing that has less to do with client hardware and more going on server side.

I realize I'm speaking out my rear and theorizing with data I do not have and so my post is generally meaningless. But I felt compelled to share sympathy and express that I have tried everything I can logically think of to increase performance. In fact, one of the PC's have even been reformatted and reupdated and was running SoT and still ended up with issues after the fact.

I admit the Alienware 1070 showcases the issue the 'best' the others seem to have much less trouble... but I still can't isolate the deeper issue.

  • Firstly is this a recent thing or has this always happened when you play SoT because it could be the update is affecting the performance of the game on certain machines. I'd also do a disk defrag as that is always a good start then free up any space on your hard drive. Also how old is your laptop. I'm an xbox player but I have also experienced framerate drop and rubber banding on the servers so its not isolated to PC players.

  • @triheadedmonkey yep, checked the ram and it's correctly mounted
@Dragonsire2016 using and SSD, no antivirus or updates running during the game. My processor is 2.8 and can turbo boost up to 3.30
@AlPhAcEnTuRiOn2 I started playing 5 days ago so I dunno if it was better prior the last patch... and on win10 defrag isn't required
