Should SoT be Free to play?

  • I think so. I would feel better about how they bring in content and think it would be a great way to introduce micro transactions. I have the game on game pass but use game pass to try out other titles. I lost someone in my crew yesterday who canceled game pass. If they make SoT free to play I could get some of me old crew back!

  • @stubbierbell598 find a new crew, get discord, sail in an open crew and meet people... yawn

  • @stubbierbell598 It has it's pros and cons. Certainly free to play would probably bring in a wave of new players, but I can see that being a return to bad days. Remember the first month when thar were lots of players using the Game Pass 1 month trial? An' e'ery other ship ye met was full of hate spouting children who just wanted to cause havoc? Remember all the calls for PvE servers because it was so hostile out there? I think free to play would bring these type of players back.

Then there be the concern of making money. We don't want SoT to become a world full of micro-transactions where e'ery little thing requires ye to hand o'er real money. It could (I mean I would hope not) even lead to the temptation to turn the game into a Pay to Win fiasco.

Buy yer friend a copy as a early/late birthday present. It's like $35 on Amazon now :)

Nae for me on free to play, I'm already on the fence about micro-transactions in a full price game.

  • @stubbierbell598 isn’t the game like really cheap now? I paid full price (not complaining that I did - I love it)

  • @awesomecoreusa hey! Stop stealing my exact thoughts! But seriously no. What about all the people who already payed for it. Also I don’t want tons of horse a***s sailing around who don’t actually care about the game. Micro transactions are a definite risk so nope.

  • O ya and also rare doasnt want micro transactions like that. When pets come out that’s like the first thing we’d have to pay for to get. And it would probably be cheap to get an in game pet anyways (hopefully). And in the end a monkey isn’t going to help you win a battle. I mean maybe but that would be one k*****s monkey.

  • No - they have development teams being paid large salaries to continue to build upon the game. That's like saying, hey you built me a deck, and now I want a gazebo - is it free? Of course not.

It is however part of the MS Game Pass.

  • @nacmine sorry matey, I will endeavor to allow ye to post first in future :)

Good additional point though, we're... what... 3 months from launch? An' Rare are saying 4 million players? So 4 million people who either paid $60 or 3 months o' Game Pass an then -blip- free to play.

  • No. Enough said.

  • @awesomecoreusa just to make sure you knew I was joking right? I’m not trying to be that person. I probably sound like an idiot even asking this question.

  • Free2Play mostly ends up in Pay2Win, which would be horrible. But microtransactions would be vital to keep the game going, and in that case some sort of boosted premium account would be the safest way to make money.
It would encourage more of our friends to play, sure. But it would probably also encourage a bunch of players we don't want to play with (or against).
An open-world F2P-Game with constant PvP, but still a good community and without P2W just sounds too good to be true. So for SoT this probably wouldn't work.

  • @nacmine I was right I did sound like an idiot asking that question. Nevermind

  • @nacmine Aye, I took it in jest :) Yer fine matey.

Kind of my point. My buddy won't pay 10$ a month to play .33 cents a day. Cheapest I saw it was $30 he's more upset about giving them money because of the content. The thrones kind of set em over the top.

I don't even know if I bought it for em he would play again. I'm sure once more content comes that will change.

But my point is if they are already selling it for a reduced price, why not just make it free in another month or two?

  • @sirliborius Aye, this be my concern. As I said in me original response it would be like the first month after launch where all the Free Pass freebie players were playing, an after realizing it was not the game they wanted it to be (which I can only assume was some kind o' Fortnite or OverWatch but w'th ships) just decided to mess with other players.

I'm actively dreading when they do Free Play Days on SoT through Xbox Live. Those will be the days I go play somet'ing else for a while.

  • @StubbierBell598 That's insulting. No it should'nt be free to play a lot of work went into this game and its a fantastic game.

  • @stubbierbell598 because that’s unfair to the people who bought it. Also if your friend wouldn’t play it if you got for them then why would they play if it was free

  • @nacmine said in Should SoT be Free to play?:

The man makes a valid point... I mean if ye buy it for him it was 'free'

  • @ve111a but it would fit the bill for free to play. You said before microtransactions are good for the game. Who's gonna buy em if only a small pool sticks around

  • @stubbierbell598 I don’t reacall anyone saying that micro transactions are good in this forum

  • @stubbierbell598

Sure. I think every game should be free to play. That way I can play every game I want to and not have to worry about saving up for it.

  • I simply don’t think you’ll be getting any support from the pirates who bought the game. The pirates who love it how it is and are waiting for more content. But we don’t want a bunch of non caring greifers coming into this wonderful game and ruining it. We don’t want tons of micro transactions ruining it. We don’t want the game we payed for to be FREE!

me, I will buy them and know a lot of others on here will too. Overwatch cost money and still has microtransactions. This game had a lot of hard work put into it, just look at the water for a few minutes. You saying "you guys don't deserve money because my friends are too cheap" is insulting to their hard work.

  • @awesomecoreusa I do still have nightmares from the first month lol. But i think it would be different this time. I think it would scoop up the people who liked the game but didn't commit to gamepass or the full game. I'm sure 90% of the A*****s got it out of their system.

  • Ok OP, I need you to do a couple of things for me: Please put down the torch lighter for a second. Now take that "Crack pipe" you've been smoking and lay it on the floor planks in front of your foot (Since you're a pirate I'm assuming there's a good chance that you have just one foot) and then step on it and grind it until it disintegrates! Why on God's green earth would RARE do that?👀 I'd paid 60.00 for the game so everybody else is going to pay something!😁 😁 😁

These are the days you can sink to your hearts galore, do your voyages and just sink those that come for a fight who don't realise they need to stock up, can't do sails without dropping anchor and leaving themselves open for defeat.

  • @stubbierbell598 love the optimism, but I don't share it. Aye, it would bring back people who enjoyed the game but were not prepared to commit $60/$10 a month but those be the same people who will not spend money on micro-transactions.

  • So what they would do with customers that payd the game already... Heh give ouer money back? :D
    Cmoon :P

Overwatch has historic player counts... all i know is i got the game with 8 people on game pass and only me and one other guy still play lol

  • @wipe-nd-clean That certainly be one way to look at it. Who knows, maybe I'll have dinged legend by then an' not be so concerned with losing me plunder cause I wasn't paying enough attention an' some kiddie pirates ram me ship cause they can't work a cannon.

    $60 credit in a micro-transaction account :)

  • @finkku games $36.80 at walmart. They will not be giving you a refund because you paid more.

  • Well....if your accessing the game through game pass.... it kind of is free to play. If your a game pass subscriber specifically for THIS game and ONLY this game.... your a shill. lol.

Even I only play this on gamepass, but I take advantage of other games on the service so... not so bad.

But in effect the game itself doesn't have a big price tag the service it's on does.

The $60 price tag? Yea... it shouldn't even be sold independently. And if we want it sold that way... then yea.. I can see potential for a reduced price or even free. (Of course, MS might simply stop selling games at $60 outright in support of having all MS titles be subscription only titles via game pass, but there is always the question of how to reach players not subscribing to the service)

Until, that is, I look down the road. If we account for all the updates the game will receive and the state of the game around say... xmas time. It'll be just as solid a title as many full priced games I've played. Sadly, based on game pricing practices not all games are created equal even if the price tag would imply they should be.

that's your friends poor choice in games, Not Rare. Get better friends.

  • Remember the days when if all the people you usually sail with were busy and you’d join a crew and it would be a bunch of obnoxious people who were just awful at the game but they didn’t try to improve they just greifed. I hated that. It be 5 times before I’d find a random crew worth playing with. If you make the game free than any random crew becomes 20 times before you find a decent crew.
