6 Frustrations and Ideas

  • After playing the game on and off since launch and in the beta i have noticed a few things i think need to be addressed.

    1. can we just summon the mermaid with a magic conch or something?

It's really frustrating that everyone knows your still on an island because they can still see your mermaid. Its no secret they can't see your smoke plume. But they can still see it sitting there happily waiving saying "hello! There is somebody on the island that isn't you."

It is also annoying that when you fall off a boat you have to be a certain distance for it to appear. Many times I'm just sitting in the water watching my boat sail off waiting for a mermaid to appear.

    1. it would be reeeeaaaaaallllly nice to be able to pick my server.

I live in western Canada and I must say the lag in game is atrocious a majority of the time. So much so in fact that I can point blank an enemy coming up my ladder and still not kill them.

Being able to pick servers would open up a lot of options. So for instance if I wanted to play on an empty server and be left alone I could. If I wanted to join my friends server in my own boat I also could.

    1. Can you make it so that we can use the speaking horn to alternatively listen at long range?

This would be great for eaves dropping on unsuspecting pirates.

    1. why can't we bury treasure and make our own maps?

Nothing would be cooler then burying some treasure when your being chased to dig up later, or randomly finding other pirates treasure when you dig in the wrong spot.

    1. why can't we stockpile supplies into other barrels of the same resource. It would be a lot more efficient to run around the island and put all the bananas, cannon balls, and planks into their own barrels then to have to go back and forth from the ship a thousand times.

    2. ship defence.

I would really like to see an option to raise the ladders or b***y trap my boat to deter other pirates from trying to board my boat.

Right now even if I stand point blank with a blunderbuss and hit an enemy climbing my ladder while his head is inside my blunderbuss I will not kill them in one shot.

Let me know if anyone agrees or why you disagree! I'm getting rather frustrated that every time I try to PVP (at no option of mine) I get crushed despite hitting them twice with a blunderbuss on my boat and once with my pistol. I have also point blank hot people with the eye of reach and can not one shot them.

  • I think EoR always takes 75% health on hit, so oneshot happens when the target is at three quarters health or lower...

  • @mighty-ace123 I get one shotted from eye of reach and blunderbuss at the same distances all the time. I have been able to one shot players before when I was maybe on a better server. Those times were so far few and inbetween however and that is one of my frustrations. I have also hit people with the blunderbuss point blank and a shot from the pistol that works more consistantly, however today that was not the case. I had to hit someone 3+ times with the pistol/blunderbuss combo to maybe kill them.

  • @cold-dead-legs that sounds like ping issues, the game registers you in a different spot than what you are looking at?

  • @mighty-ace123 this is what I suspect. I'm use to having a really high ping due to my location but SoT has been particularily frustrating because I have no control over it. When I have put on the ping to display in the top left it sits between 120 - 150. If your curious I have a Google mesh network that I am hardwired in for at 150mbs.

Yeah it can be a big influence for this game. I suspect a lot of "cheating" situations are caused by this

    1. Summoning a new one would be great yes but leave the usual one as is. It bugs out a lot anyways so we often shrug and say it's bugged and if you hide on an island or try to sneak up we need something to warn us.

    2. Picking your region would be nice but not the server. This would just play into armada forming and tho I have enough friends to fill up a whole server I dont want to do this to people who solo sloop or just have enough to fill a galleon.

    3. Dont think there's much to hear. Lots of people use partychat or Discord anyways. But its an Idea.

    4. A Friend of mine wants this too. I dont get it, just let the others who killed and sunk you have their payout. It's already a case of slim pickings as is.

    5. Yeah that'd be nice. Good Idea to manage a supply chain to the ship for better farming. Especially once we get several different cannonball types.

    6. No please no. Raising ladders etc is just rediculous. There must be a way to get onto the ship and it's already hard as it is. Remember you can shoot people off the ladders and even if you dont one shot them you'll still shoot them off and he has to try again and guess what that would get him hit in the face again. Just guard your ship better.
B***y traps? Why not have a crewmate guard the ship? Or have him hide a barrel to shoot when a boarder comes. Done boobytrapped.

  • @hynieth I had The discussion in another thread and if they were to implement raising ladders then I think it would be wise and fair to also implement grappling hooks that would take up a weapon slot. I find the ship just has no deterent for people to board my ship which is a problem when my ping is too high to make PVP feasable. The only current trap I can put on my ship is snakes. Even if it's just an alarm or something to assist players in boosting ship defence I really think it would help with reducing player grieving. Even if I could tame a skeleton or shark to defend my boat i think it would help.

  • @cold-dead-legs
My best advice is to get a (or preferrably more) friends into your game. It helps to have a guard while you're off to do stuff.
Also if your ping is really high it helps to serverhop. I've had it once and it was solved with a hop. I just hopped after the first skull I got and turned in. If your ping is always or regularly high I feel for you. I've got a ping of 40-60 on average.

  • @hynieth I actually rarely play solo, I play with a friend of mine almost every time.

We use to gather snakes to defend our boat but that came with it's own complications. It did work surprisingly well however.

I'm pretty use to a high ping in any game I play. Anything is better then the shared connection I use to use with my laptop back in 2006. If I could play Cod4 on that then everything is good in comparison rofl

  • #3 I like

  • @cold-dead-legs I'm old enough to know what it's like to play age of Empires 1 trough a Dial up Modem over TCP/IP yet I use smokeping and other tools to finetune my network so I dont have any internal connection issues.
Also I'm blessed with a great internet connection externally.

Being used to something awefull doesnt make something slightly less awefull good :-P

  • @hynieth dialup still gives me nightmares..... The sound.... The sound... and I didn't even have the pleasure of gaming on dialup!

  • @cold-dead-legs i think being able to pick a server region would be ok, but not a specific server, too easy to abuse. Sometimes the ping is pretty bad, then you start to hear other languages and you know why, 'oh, im playing with people from the other side of the planet.'
Even then, you could pick a region that is in 'off peak' time to intentionally avoid PVP, so maybe not...

  • @cold-dead-legs
The first one is very needed

    1. Misconception about point blank shots

Before replying to your 6 points I see you have some misconceptions about how point blank shots work. The only one-shot weapon is the blunderbuss which will only one-shot on a close range BODY shot. Headshots don't exist in this game and shooting on the head with a blunderbuss will make you miss most of the pellets which results in less damage and no one-shot. The eye of reach always does 75% damage on hit and cannot one-shot full health targets. You can blame it on lag all you want, but I think you mostly need to adjust your expectations based on the facts.

    1. Summon Mermaid

At the moment the lingering mermaid is the only indication you have of someone still being around. I don't think removing that would be a good thing. As for the time to spawn after you fall off your ship... see it as a penalty for stupidity, don't fall off your ship and if you do... swim the opposite direction instead of just waiting.

    1. Picking server

As far as I know the game already connects you to the server closest to you. I think I've even read in patchnotes about ping reduction for certain countries because they hosted the game closer or something.

If you'd be able to determine which server you end up on, entire fleets would just be farming servers and PvP would mean the one that brings the most friends would win. While it might sound nice to play with a bigger group of people, it'll change the entire game in a bad way.

Your remark about joining a empty server to be left alone, just makes me wonder if you understand the concept of the game.. This is a multiplayer game! Rare wants you to play and work together with other crews, why would they offer options to let players separate themselves from others. Apart from that, why would Rare host 4 million seperate servers? If you want to be left alone, you have to up your spyglass skills, not ask for a easy mode solo server.

    1. Use speaking trumpet to listen

This does sound interesting and could work. Unfortunately most people are in private parties which kindof ruins the whole ingame chat.

    1. Bury treasures and create your own maps

This would offer interesting options. Especially if getting killed would mean you'd drop your map for others to chase after your loot or the possibility to share the map with others to create player driven events.

    1. Stockpile supplies in barrels on the island

I don't see a reason for this limitation either, why can't we store resources in barrels on the island. It would be easy enough to limit it to just be able to store items that are already in the barrel.

    1. Raising ladders / boobytraps

If you hit the person climbing the ladder on the right spot he either gets one shotted or thrown off the ship. Raising the ladders in a way as suggested in another post could work, if you can still drop them from the water that is, but I don't really see a need for it apart from trying to make ship combat more fun. Boobytraps feel like something out of place on a ship.
