Megalodon music

  • Tried the new event with a couple of friends on our galleon. The riddle itself was pretty interesting and fun to do, did the majority of it without any help, however when we were given our drums by Merrick we were quite dissappointed.. the fact we are expected to hold a tune all the way to the location is insane... I mean that player can then not use their voice megaphone, or help sail the ship, or do anything... and it is completely impractical... It's not impossible to do, and we managed it, but the first attempt my friend accidently pressed Q... so we had to sail back to pick up the tune again.. for heavens sake why not have a system whereby you have to play the tune with Marrick for 1 minute to 'learn' it, and then you have it, equipped, you don't need to play it for the entire journey to the boss fight.. if you stop playing a song you don't instantly forget it for heavens sake...

Secondly, we reached our destination, but there were no other players... we were waiting for quite a while, no one showed up. We also used our megaphones with THREE different ships during our quest to say hi and try to begin a conversation and not ONE of them replied! This is ridiculous. I loved the quest line/riddle solving but the boss fight is a little impractical?... So essentially people need to wait around for others to show up or someone to cooperate before they can summon the boss? At least give people the option to start the fight as a single crew? Or if you want more crews to cooperate then make it easier, add a function in the game for match making for instance... 'X crew on X server is looking for crew mates to help defeat the megalodon!' and if you accept you are merged with their server... this would be better rather than relying on crews randomly meeting and randomly both being on the same wavelength and wanting to work together..

  • You've been so quiet lately so it's nice to see you again!

We loved the riddles and discovering the hidden places too. I hope we get more things like this in the future.

We've had mixed results with the final event. We did manage to team up with a sloop to summon the beast but we were ill prepared and in the end, we failed. Since then we've tried to team up but either there is no one around or they have other ideas.

This morning we camped the end zone hoping someone might need another crew but we ended up giving up and doing voyages. The entire morning we didn't see a single ship. We are hoping the weekend will bring new players to the hunt and we'll be able to not only complete it but help some others out.

I will say though that the seas have been amazing! I've not been this relaxed in the game ever. Not everyone is friendly, but we haven't been chased down. It could be the times we're on or that enough players are still on the hunt that they are too busy to fight. Either way I'm very happy to experience it!!

About that drum though! I love the drum but carrying that tune so far is a pain and for solo players impossible. They have to hope someone has it already there. One tip that we discovered is that it's transferable. Meaning when my poor finger was about to fall off, a crew mate pulled out their drum and picked up the beat. This was a huge relief that it worked since we sat around waiting forever and no one showed up so finger cramps were shared among the crew.

  • @pumpkinkangaroo Haha thanks! I guess I ended up taking a break from the forums, it was consuming a lot of my time and now I've finished my exams I wanted to spend a bit more time gaming with friends :)

I agree the riddle itself was really fun, it wasn't easy, my friend even asked if we should google the answers and I was like no come on we can figure this out! And we did :) I like that.

Hey do you want to add each other in game? I mean unfortunately I doubt we'd be able to team up as there's no way for crews to join the same server instance.. (again, Rare maybe add some match making? Would be helpful to form larger fleets for bosses, heck perhaps people would more readily team up for forts!! :) ) but you seem nice so it would be great to sail with you at some point!

I have also experienced what you say though... we encountered.. I think it was 2-3 galleons and 1 sloop, we were on a galleon.. not ONE ship chased us down and I was standing guard extremely cautious (Fortunately one of my friends really enjoys being the look out on the crows nest so if there was a ship close we knew about it..) but we weren't attacked.. it was lovely.

Yep, same comments about music... I do think that is a bizarre thing for Rare to implement. They probably thought it sounded really cool in the office and to be fair it does sound cool but it is really impractical... they should have merrick hand us a drunken sheet of music which we have to attempt 3-4 times (because it's badly written as he was drunk when he wrote it), or we have to play it with him for 1 minute to learn it then we can access it at any time... or the instrument starts glowing (like our tattoos apparently do if we summon it but I haven't seen that yet) and we automatically 'mysteriously' know the tune to play... etc etc.

  • @pumpkinkangaroo

Same with me and my Girlfriend. We waited at merrik himself hoping for some other ships to show up, one did!

However they ended up sinking us as we were shouting we are friendly trying to crew up lol. Didn't have anything on board however so no real loss just annoying. Again we ended up just doing voyages to make some gold before we went off.

This so much this.... shouting at people 'hey can we be friends' 'we won't attack!' but no reply... or they attack you...

I forgot actually but now this has reminded me, yesterday me and my friends were talking to a ship through our megaphones.. again no reply... then we heard a cannon shot but we were all looking the other way and saw nothing.... then we all went on the island and did the quest objective... we get back to the ship to see it sailing away.... we quickly mermaided to it, killed the person, and saved our ship as it crashed into the rocks.. but WHY??? We didn't have ANY loot!

I think the fact that the SoT team want people to work together more is great and I've heard some really positive things about players forming fleets to fight the megalodon etc but sometimes it really doesn't work... like people here have experienced.. waiting for ages for people who aren't going to turn up and even if they do they may not want to help you.. and yet this whole quest literally REQUIRES at least one additional crew...

  • @angrycoconut16

Yeah sometimes it doesn't work lol. But hey they are pirates!

As frustrating as the game is I do enjoy the unpredictable side of things and the trust issues between players.

  • @angrycoconut16 I added you ;) . It would be nice to see you on the sea sometime. How did your exams go? I took a little time away myself when the patch went awry and the boards blew up.

We were in this morning (eastern us) and saw a few sloops, but no one was looking to group up. We are going to try again tonight after the boys get off of work and hope more people are on and willing. We are pretty much stalking the Ridge when we're in not only for ourselves, but to help anyone else.

I love the sheet music idea! Today we were talking about maybe we carry the tune to the appropriate spot and as we reach it we've learned it. Sheet music is a better idea, but at this point anything would be nice. We carried the tune in case the sloops around us were solo and couldn't carry it themselves.

I was also thinking about your ideas for teaming up. I love the faith in humanity Rare has and so I'll keep trying to support it even if I believe it's a lost cause. They give me a glimmer of hope. I was thinking that perhaps a rally point closer to the end game. An NPC ship that sits a little ways off so you aren't right on top of it to group up at. We won't be able to interact with the ship but it can be placed anywhere and we will be able to find each other.

Again, it's a point were griefers can find prey but it's something. If they wish to keep the tune traveling then perhaps a crew member of that ship could be absentmindedly playing the tune? It won't be at the beginning where you run into people just starting out who will be taking some time to get to the end. When you have a nice group you all head to the right spot and begin.

    Just an idea.

We have met a few hanging around Merrick who just want to mess with people. Even one who was shouting "Friendly" while shooting at us. I try to avoid PvP but happened to be with my boys and one of them is great at it so it was no contest. I love it when he plays with us!

@ChunkGB I hope that enough players will be more willing to help out this weekend. If we team up even the jerks won't be able to mess with us!

Oh, and the glowing tattoo is amazing! I'll let you see it for yourself, but make sure you have at least one crew member shirtless to get the full effect! If only it didn't look like I was trying to harness the danged thing!

  • @chunkgb I mean to be fair, I think the thing I'm most annoyed about isn't the fact that some people back stab you, I agree it's a pirate game.. the thing which is frustrating me the most is the LACK of players for the megalodon.. I was really hoping Rare had restructured their server a little bit so that the boss area increases the chance of player interaction but that doesn't seem to be the case....

  • @pumpkinkangaroo Exams went ok I felt! Get the results back in 13 days :)

The thing is I can appreciate Rare's faith in humanity too but the other thing is allowing like-minded players to meet up. I'm sure there were probably lots of others online at that time who were also ready to fight the megalodon, yet none of them were on my ocean in sight.... Rare ought to help those people merge server and meet up easier...

  • Update: Me and my friend have been sailing around for ages looking for people to fight the megalodon with! This is utterly ridiculous! I've added @PumpkinKangaroo but even that won't help as we won't be able to join the same server instance! I found another sloop I wanted to talk to and I was typing to them and using my megaphone (not sure what the distance is but we were fairly close and gaining on them) to say we were friendly and just looking for people to help with the megalodon if interested and they sail away without saying a word! This is unbelievable!

Rare I love the idea you have come up with for this boss but for heavens sake, please help us out! I'm more annoyed as I have a busy week of work next week so I will not have the time to spend logging on running around the sea in the hopes of finding someone. I should be able to log on with the megalodon being a definite option in this event...

@Rare-Employee please add a system whereby players who are looking for the megalodon can easily find each other... and this can be used for future events you add, anything which requires multiple crews, add a system into the game to make this far more feasible.. at this rate I don't think I'm even going to see the megalodon before the event ends! I know it will still be there after but I want to be able to experience the full event including summoning it with drums.. I don't care how it is implemented... Some ideas:

    • Noticeboard at outposts? 'X Crew looking for people to fight megalodon with...'

    • Your servers work by allowing player interactions every 15-30 minutes right? Increase this a lot at hot spots, such as the megalodon. Increase it to 5 minutes? Or some sort of system so ships can be found much more, increasing the chance of finding people who are happy to do the megalodon with you

    • Allow friends to join each others server instance. I know this could be abused though... 'lets join together and hunt down ships together'... but what if I really want to do a megalodon with someone else and their crew? I think there ought to be a way for 2-3 ships to join in a fleet to fight bosses... as in, friends who have separate crews...

  • @angrycoconut16 Agree totally would be better if you only needed a galleon full.
That way at least you would be able to try searching for a game with randoms or something.
