There's lots of discussions on the current Sword combat system. Some people think it is fine, some people think it isn't.
While I Can think of some ways it could be made better, I wanted to suggest another work-around that perhaps would partially fix the issue by proxy.
One of either...
- A fighting pit: Outpost could offer an area in which friendly fire is unable as soon as you enter a "circle drawn in the sand" type thing at outposts.
- A crew management feature allowing to challenge a crew member in a duel. This could have lots of comical implications when sailing against the wind at sea and someone just vommited their grog on you.
Why?
- Speaking in my personal experience only, I've killed pirates using my swords about once for every 20 kills I get. I'm not sure if everyone favors guns the way I do, but that's how it is on my end.
- I have never been in a proper sword fight. Every kill I've gotten with the sword where 2-3 quick finishing blows against someone I had just shot, probably while they had a bucket in their hand. Yarr
As such, I feel like I wouldn't even really know how to handle a sword fight in this game. The few times I died to a sword, I was trying to either run away or swing wildly. Perhaps I should have blocked, but in the chaos of the action, while my ship was sinking, I was not mentally prepared.
A mean to fight among friends, especially in a world without death penalty, could be a great way of getting people to learn and understand the sword fighting system. Perhaps the next fight I'd get into, I could actually get into it with a plan!
That's my less-radical-suggestion in making the most of the melee combat system, Thoughts?
