A means to more carefully hide treasure?

  • I hate griefing, I would loathe the idea of some player sneaking aboard my ship or claiming an on shore treasure while I'm elsewhere occupied and being able to hide it so well it cannot be found.

But I have seen players loaded with treasure (usually sloops) who are perhaps about to be attatcked, dash ashore and try to hide their loot before they engage in combat.

I feel that isn't a bad idea. I wonder of the value behind our burying our own treasure to be claimed later? This would obviously require a time investment that may be impractical. And if not properly handled might lead to ships hiding their full load as soon as it's gathered, so they may finish a voyage without potential loss.

    That would be bad.

So I can see how this might not work.

But I still feel that 'something" is missing from the whole "pirate experience" when I have to answer the question, can you bury your own treasure? With a resounding no.

  • as a solo slooper,it takes a lot time hiding treasures on island, get new treasures n bring the hided ones again on boardit takes to long, sure its smart hide the most valuable ones on island.a good place for hiding on ship is under the crowsnest (dont know the english word) on the sails under the crowsnest

  • I proposed an idea about how to handle this in another thread. Basically, when treasure is buried by a player everyone in their Crew gets a special types of treasure map (denoted by the icons on the maps already so you can tell a Voyage map from a Message in a Bottle, this would just be yet another type). It would be the variety of an island with an X at the treasure. To make this work each chest buried would be a new map of this type added (so we don't have to worry about adding more X marks to the maps dynamically, and it has already been tested that we appear to have unlimited pages for maps available).

Here is the catch though. This new map type would be vulnerable in PvP. When a Ship is sunk we can now get a Message in a Bottle item that contains all the Crew maps of that Crew. In this way it isn't some special protection system, but it takes some real work to get your hands on these.

These chests, like other chests that maps are active for, will remain available until all players log off that have the maps. So, in this way it is possible the treasure could be lost as well if no one goes to get it just like any other chests.

We should also only be able to bury chests, at least for now, because that is what we have the animations in place for and they could be run in reverse essentially to bury the thing.

Just an idea of how it might be able to work in practice.

  • If me and my crew are just finishing a skull fort we'll hide the key in a rock on the fort island and defend the island. It's super fun actually the whole pvp. One time two gallions showed up after we just finished it, thanks to my friend hiding the key we where able to focus on killing every one and sinking there ships. We rolled out with all the loot.
