The Crossbow + Bolt types

  • alt text

I suggest adding a crossbow to the game with varied ammunition to add a bit of spice to combat, as well as adding a new mechanic. This weapon would need to have a new "ammunition type" mechanic introduced, or each different version of it would have to sit in a separate weapon slot in the weapons locker.

    BOLT TYPES

    • Standard Bolt - Roughly the same damage as a sniper rifle.

    • Poison Bolt - Poisons the target similar to a snake bite., while doing severely reduced damage.

    • Exploding Bolt - Although rare, and the explosion small, these bolts prove useful in certain situations.

    • Fire Bolt - Useful against those pesky plant skeletons, does reduced damage to players however.

    • Magic Bolt - Useful against Shadow skeletons, and maybe players with low Order of Souls Rep?

    FINALLY

    • The Grappling Hook Conversion - Exactly what it sounds like! Perhaps with limited range. Infinitely in boarding ships or climbing to the highest peak on an island.

Her artwork for this crossbow was almost destined for this game.

lol it definitely matches the art style. I dunno about fire because that would be hell to implement for ships as well. We can't have fire with a reasonable way to put it out without easy access to water unless they make buckets usable on ladders. I like poison as it would be easy to implement. I dont think grappling hooks will every get added because it would be cheesed and very hard to code for this style game.

Appreciate the feedback! I kinda came up with the effects hastily just to demonstrate the possibilities of such a weapon, Even if its limited to 2 or 3 types. And yeah In my mind the fire wouldn't actually effect the ships themselves, which is actually pretty realistic if one worries about such things in such a game. As for the Grappling hook, I think if you added a HUUUUUGE reload time (winding up the rope etc) and kept the range limited I can see it being balanced possibly. As for programming wise, perhaps it could be rigged as a small shot out of a cannon along a set path with limited range, then add the rope for visuals sake.

No idea lol. I do know it would need to be VERY high risk because its very high reward. Same for the proposed grappling hooks for ships, The only way I see them working right is if you miss its like hitting an anchor you need to wind it back up before moving.

  • I like it, I'd make it more about crowd control rather than stat effects, having only one type of ammo but it would cripple players with the same type of cripple you get from falling from a high place and breaking a leg. Obviously this would make swords a bit weaker against it, but I think it could force players out of the BB + sword loadout, if they see themselves getting countered by it.

  • There are many different possibilities that can be explored. The crossbow idea is unique to say the least. Some of the different bolts are a tad much, like the Magic Bolt (wouldn't be fair to newer players, hence breaking that "everyone is even" rule). Exploding Bolt is kinda neat (basically a small scale Powder Keg). Grappling Hook is up for debate to say the least. But in all fairness the game has many ways to go about adding weapons. Fishing, if it were to be implemented, could go towards making poisonous weapons (or bolts, arrows, what have you...) Lionfish, Scorpionfish to name two are poisonous fish that could be "harvested" for the poison. Or you could simply catch a snake. Game has many scenarios that can be played out, just got to see which ones take place.

@urihamrayne I like that Idea!!! Kinda like a bola shot or something.

I agree the Magic Bolts effect was a tad iffy, was just trying to figure out how to apply it to PVP as well as PVE, but you are right there. But yes you hit the nail on the head with the exploding bolt thing, imo they should not damage ships but rather serve as an easy way to ignite powder kegs, eliminate a group of weakened skeletons, maybe launch yourself/friends/enemies short distances (knocking them overboard.)

As to what you mentioned, I would LOVE to sea more sea life (dolphins, sea turtles, whales etc) as well as fishing!!! :D

    BOLT TYPES

    • Standard Bolt - Roughly the same damage as a sniper rifle.

Standard is overrated, haha. Maybe we should leave the standard variety to the musket and have this beauty of a weapon only have specialised ammos? ^^

    • Poison Bolt - Poisons the target similar to a snake bite., while doing severely reduced damage.

Maybe just poisoning them would suffice or making them insta-drunk. Both? Poisoned drunk.

    • Exploding Bolt - Although rare, and the explosion small, these bolts prove useful in certain situations.

C*****r Bolt - Shooting targets makes the bolt burst in short series of cracks making the targets dance like crazy for a short duration.

    • Fire Bolt - Useful against those pesky plant skeletons, does reduced damage to players however.

I imagine this to be more useful with the gunpowder kegs. Maybe lighting the clothes on fire could work too. Looking at your foes running mad on their deck enflamed zig zag could be fun.

    • Magic Bolt - Useful against Shadow skeletons, and maybe players with low Order of Souls Rep?

Perhaps not all bolts need combat proficiency. This bolt could be an enchanted one that creates a mirror image of the shooter to the spot it hits for a short duration. While formed from the lingering stardust, the image performs any task close enough like pulling levers or triggering a trap.

    • The Grappling Hook Conversion - Exactly what it sounds like! Perhaps with limited range. Infinitely in boarding ships or climbing to the highest peak on an island.

Grappling hook, harpoon gun, claws etc. Anything would suit me. The more options the merrier.
