Bounty system

  • This has been brought up by many time before but I guess every mention of it helps bring it a little bit closer to being put in the game. Anyway a bounty system that gives rewards for killing pirates that have sunk ships or killed pirates is a great idea. It could be like the bounty in Tom Clancy’s the Division where if a player kills someone they will immediately have a bounty on their head that will give a reward for them being killed, the more people they kill or ships the sink the higher the reward. At each outpost there should be an NPC with the top paying bounties. The NPC should then give a picture of the ship and pirate and a very general last seen location. You can then go after someone and recieve a very handsome reward for your kills.

  • The division also allowed a player to outlive the bounty and collect the reward for themselves. Would this also be implemented? It would give some incentive to the both sides.

  • I like the idea of the game tracking players who have killed others in the server. There should be faction rewards for different clothing and ship items based off the amount of PvE people you've killed.

  • @logansdadtoo said: What would the bounty be for? If it's for trolling, griefing or for pvp, then it would just get abused! Trolls & griefers could use the bounty to get their random crew attacked. PVPers would abuse it as they would constantly want to have a bounty on them to encourage more pvp.

    • I agree a bounty system would be awesome.
    • It needs to be opt in for the bounty and the hunter.
    • You don't get to collect bounty unless you also opt in to being hunted.
    • No bounty for ships not opted in.
    • You choose to opt in at the outpost each time you sail.
    • Your bounty is linked to your rep with the Bounty Hunter's Guild, which is based only on the amount of bounties you've collected.

Kill monkeys will have plenty of lucrative bounties, so it should ease up the strain on PVEers. Maybe? Thoughts?

This system along with the Blood Sea idea would go a long way toward alleviating the PVP/PVE strain. IMO.

  • No, this goes against Rare's vision for the game!

I'm not saying you're wrong, but RARE has already stated - and proven, that their vision for the game is adaptable based on player feedback. I'll assume your emphatic dismissal is a strongly stated opinion.

I'm curious, what about this idea do you not like?

Again, genuinely seeking civil discourse here, not argument.

  • @greaseman85 How so?

  • @captain-arcanic Why would someone need to opt in to being hunted? That defeats some of the purpose which would be to stop the mindless killing by giving an incentive to hunt down the "griefer". If people could opt out of being hunted why would anyone opt in?

  • First off: Don't call'em griefers for chasing you down and taking your stuff. That's the game. This is where I agree with greaseman85. What we're doing is giving the aggressive pirates another option to "aggress," and hopefully leave the passive pirates alone. They would opt in because they like fighting, and this gives them gold and rep for fighting, but only others that like fighting too.

I don't know for certain it would fix the problem, but it seems like it might, and it doesn't punish a pirate for being a pirate in a pirate game.

  • A bounty system is intriguing but it could create some social obstacles. If you are a pirate that always had a high bounty on your head, you would be less desirable to group with knowing that if yo are on he boat its going to be constant grief. Maybe a more doable solution would be to add a PVP faction for rep. Could be as simple as just collecting skulls of rival pirates and turning them in for gold and rep. The skulls could be random value or even scale with the killed pirate rank. Minimally, this game needs some sort of stat tracking. Give us a captains log that shows off your pirates legacy. I would love to know how many ships I have sunk or what my K/D in PVP is. Stats make everything that much more immersive and gives you a point of reference to compare to others. We need more than just new clothes.

  • @captain-arcanic no I understand I only called them griefers (notice I put quotations around griefers earlier) because I don't think that playing the way the game is meant to be played should be considered griefing.

The thing is, if there was an option to opt out of the bounty system what is to stop the PvP players from opting out of the bounty system and kill ships without the threat of the bounty?

    Short answer: Nothing.

Hopefully this just thins the angry school of piranha from the waters.
