Ability to bury treasure

  • It is important to add the ability to bury treasure in the game and the possibility to track the site where treasure is hidden in the crew's maps. I have found sometimes than you need to store treasure in order to accumulate resources or simple hid it from a hostile ship that has blocked you in an island with no possibility to transport items. I think this feature will make the game more piraty. X marks the spot!

Would be fun if you found a map when killing a pirate showing where they buried it

I agree, the player or crew who hid the treasure would then need to have the risk of not dying or else they give up their treasure location. I think there was a post on this very topic not too long ago.

  • @m3tal-daz3 You got my upvote!

  • You got my upvote - many a time I've wished for a way to protect my treasure from attackers...
The location could be given to the crew members, much as when you receive a bottle quest, so everyone on the crew knows where it is.

You could even make it so, that if a crew member dies, he drops a bottle which in turn can be picked up by the attacker.

Take this a step further and allow for b***y traps - just wait for the attacker to find the X on the map, and see his spade hit the buried powderkeg....

Get an achievement for waving to him as he disappears in a high arc over the seas and into the sunset...
    ;o)

  • @M3tal-Daz3 you also get my upvote too.

This would be a great idea.

  • I agree we need the burying game play....i ran into a situation where some P vpers blew up my boat but didn't bother to pik up my loot....i put it on shore and clicked the mermaid and she spawned me several islands away.....i never made it back...but my point is if I could bury it...it wouldn't be out in the open...atleast from a distant it might've been undetectable.

  • The ability to bury it, then go back several gameplay sessions later to pick it up would be even better.

It's a shame we can't have such stuff linked to our accounts so every time we log into the game it loads this. Stuff like riddles found in Bottles on the shore, our own buried treasure or any other hidden or stashed loot.

  • I also thought burying treasure was a good idea.

  • @edmund-talbot
I agree - very good idea.

  • @edmund-talbot Very useful feature. Sometimes I feel that bugged treasure hunts you have to abandon are wasted purchases. The location of treasure should persist among gameplay sessions.

  • @jaymeister03 Just saw your post and voted!

  • All for this idea, would add a great new dimension to the game. You could even post maps in the taverns, and maybe get a notification if someone finds your treasure?

  • @sledgezapper64 Love the powder keg idea!

  • @sledgezapper64 I think using one of the cursed skulls to cast a spell that raises dead guardians around the buried treasure will go with the game theme yet bobby traps should be used as well.

  • Would love this idea, would also love the ability to leave notes in the world. Mainly thank you notes when ever I pinch treasure, but also for leaving players custom riddles.

However the developer in me thinks it would be a significant technical challenge. The game doesn't allow you to re-enter a server instance you disconnected from and islands can be reset by sailing away from them which leads me to believe that nothing in SOT is truly persistent.

But hey if Mario in odyssey can chase balloons in a game without true multiplayer in mind, there's always hope!

  • @macdoland Actually is not that difficult if you think that your previously purchased contracts persist through different game sessions. Your buried treasure can be added as a new map or contract you carry around and share with your crew in the next trip

  • How is this multiple session thing for buried treasure supposed to work with random crews?

  • @m3tal-daz3

I usually just hide my treasure in thick bushes or in high, hard to reach spots in caves. People overlook a lot of stuff in this game.

Not saying I'm opposed to burying treasure. Could be neat.

  • what ive seen a lot of people come up with is some kind of interest system for burying treasure. my idea was very much the same, but it goes a little something like this.

You have found a captain's chest. you can either sell it for 700-1200 gold, or get 400 (or something like that) gold a day for burying it. You can only bury it at certain points on islands that glow with a golden mist that can be seen only through a special gem that is an added equipment. The gem only shows these locations not which has treasure. Now, either the devs can leave that, and you would have to use the gem and dig at each location and hope someone buried something there, OR these sights can have riddles attatched to them. Going forward with the latter option, you could bury a number of chests up to a maximum of your highest reputation divided by 10. Anyone has the potential to find a quest in a bottle that gives them the riddle for your first chest, and they would keep getting new chapters for the voyage until they found all your chests. To make sure the person knows they are digging up the treasure of another player the quest shows your gamertag/username - The Hunt for Sandmanbakery's Horde -.

  • @subaqueousreach Why rely in temporary glitches to hide treasure when that is the most pirate thing you can do?

All have a shovel and a map let's make better use of them

  • @m3tal-daz3

It's not a glitch to put a chest in some bushes or in a cave. Bushes arent solid objects and all the high spaces in caves are easily reachable. The point of them is it puts the chest out of sight.

And I even said I dont oppose burying treasure, I just don't really see a need for it.

  • @subaqueousreach Actually it is as sometimes you see objects just floating over bushes.

Thank you for a making my point.

  • @crimsonraziel Just as with normal treasure hunt. The person who has the map proposes it at the captain's table

  • @M3tal-Daz3 @Crimsonraziel @Edmund-Talbot @Sledgezapper64

I think you guys would love this thread over here. [Unofficial Mega Thread] - Treasure Chests: Loot, Mechanics, Etc... It has most of all the idea presented here but with full fledged mechanics. Go check it out and add to the discussion.

Thank you for a making my point.

What point? You said putting a chest in a bush is a glitch, which it isn't. It's just something you can do in the game.

Why are you even trying to argue with me? I said I like your idea.

  • @maximillianzeus I would like to check your link but it doesn't seem to work.

  • @subaqueousreach Exactly thank you for liking my idea

  • I really do think this would be an awesome idea, at least generally speaking. From a thematic standpoint it hits the nail on the head perfectly, however I'm also of the camp that this is something that it might be hard to get just right. Honestly, I don't think that the buried treasure should be something that is persistent if this were to be implemented. The reason for this is that I think it opens up more headaches than it is worth that would need to be resolved to get that working:

First of all, make it session based. When something is buried a "Crew Map" is spawned on all members of the Crew (it would have a unique little symbol like Message in a Bottle quests so you can distinguish them in the radial easily) that shows the island and the X for any chests buried. If you Bury on multiple islands you will just spawn more Maps as appropriate. The treasure will stay spawned as long as there are people on the server still with the Maps (but once all players with the Map leave they will get culled), and leaving the game will cause the Maps to be removed just like other Message in a Bottle quests.

Any Crew member that gets killed when a Crew Map is available would drop a Message in a Bottle with all available Crew Maps so other Crews still have the chance to get their hands on this treasure and it isn't protected completely. It would become a Crew Map for that new Crew as well, however new Buried items from the old crew would not be added to their version of the Map, only their own Buried stuff so the maps could eventually vary but contain overlap.

  • @redeyesith The map from the fallen player can be the same as journals you find close to skeletons of dead pirates. I like your idea in general yet I don't think that it will be hard to implement it

  • @m3tal-daz3

Ok I fixed the link you will be able to see the thread now.

  • @maximillianzeus It is filled with interesting ideas yet I think many are for aesthetic effect than useful in gameplaying

  • Another idea that should have been into the game from day 1

  • @zslipp1n Let's hope they will make it available in a future dlc
