Can you look at other peoples map?

  • Yesterday me and my mate where chasing a sloop which stole our fort-key. Anyway long story short, we boarded them a few times and didn't spot it. That confirmed our though that they may have hid it on an island. So just now I wondered if you can look at other peoples maps? Or do you just see your own.
Because maybe we could've checked if they marked any island on their map.
Any way, do we know the behaviour of a skeleton key? Does it despawn when placed on the ship? When the ship is sunk does it sink as well?

  • Hey there! To answer your first question, yes, you can look at other ships maps. They appear are interactable objects just like grog kegs and ammo crates, so anyone from anywhere can use them. You can also mark and unmark other ships maps.

As far as skeleton key behaviors go, let me try to explain (let me know if I forget something). A skeleton key, once dropped, will behave essentially the same way as any other loot (chest, crate, skull, etc.). It can be taken onto a ship without issue, and can be put on an island anywhere on the map, where it will remain indefinitely (nothing will despawn as long as it's on land). If it's dropped in the water, it will float for awhile, and eventually sink. This will make the loot in the fort inaccessible.

A couple notes on skeleton keys:
If a ship has a key on board and migrates servers, the new server will not have the loot inside that fort, making the key basically worthless, and the fort (on the original server) inaccessible. The best way to avoid this is not leaving the island with the key. The key should still be able to be used if another skull cloud spawns over the same fort on your new server.

If a skeleton key is brought to a fort that it was not dropped at, the key will be able to open the door, but the fort will not have anything inside to take.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • @sweetcalf942652 Wow. That's pretty insightful. Thank you.

If a skeleton key is brought to a fort that it was not dropped at, the key will despawn. (I don't know if this occurs as soon as you get on the island or once you put the key in the door, but either way you won't get anything from it.)

All good except for the last part, the key will not despawn on other islands unless used on their door. You can use the key on any door but only one door will have treasure.

To my knowledge not tested... a new fort will not spawn as long as an active key exists on a server. Once used or lost the new fort will spawn within 3 hours.

(Havnt been able to test double keys)

Also 3 minutes floating 1 minute sinking for 4 minutes of time in water until it despawns.

Edit: informed below that forts can double spawn, would love to test this myself sometime and appreciate the help!

  • @rattlyfob Thanks for the help! Also, a new fort can spawn before the existing key has been used, it happened while I had one on my boat (but it did take around 3 hours).

  • I had the same questions, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • we left a Castaway chest on the place of the stronghold chest, if the people we fought with was coming back.
3 hr later the same fort was active, an the chest was still there when we open the door

So what does that say about the vault? Does the loot in vault stay the same or does it despawn and respawn new loot? And if the key despawns, does the vault despawn as well?

  • @lt-swag-johnson A vault will have loot in it until it's emptied out. If another fort spawns while a key is still on the map, the existing key will remain in the possession of the crew that had it, and can (hypothetically) be used to open either vault, both of which would have loot.

Also, if a key despawns, the loot will stay, but cannot be accessed unless another skeleton key is used or the fort gets another skull cloud.

  • @sweetcalf942652
Thanks a lot for all that knowledge! I'll make sure that ill look at their map if that happens a second time ;)

  • @SweetCalf942652
Any chance you know why some forts have the door open? We beat a fort this morning but our ship had already sunk. We ended up going to the wrong for to get the key, but this other fort already had the door open. Does this just mean it had been active recently? Or do the doors close when the new one starts?

  • @greencamillion1 HAHAHAHA. Thats AMAZING.

  • OP;

Yup maps are viewable by anyone, this is why when solo, I never mark objectives.
Mostly because of my own underhandedness, where I've sailed up to other sloops or galleons, checked their tables for a scroll, if there is one, checking the map.
If youre lucky, you'll see they've marked several, write them all down and work out their most likely route. You'll always be able to follow them, even if you lose track.

Even better, unmark icons randomly and/or draw smiley faces.

  • @truthfullist56 The door to a vault will stay opened once opened until the island is reactivated.

  • @ardent-38 I was also in shock, cause I Could not see the Stronghold chest before i removed the castaway

  • @sweetcalf942652
You forgot to add that if a skeleton key has been hidden on land & you migrate servers the key will despawn (as will chests, skulls etc)

  • @logansdadtoo If the key is on land and you migrate, it won't despawn, it will just stay on its original server (which I get, in a sense is the same as despawning, but it's still there, just not for you and your crew, since you're on a new server).

I did forget to mention that though, thanks for helping clear it up!

  • @sweetcalf942652
Well, yes, it may still be there on the original server, but i have never had it confirmed & can't see how it could be confirmed, unless someone put a post on the forum saying they found a random skellie fort key where u left it.
    I feel a test coming on :)

  • @logansdadtoo A crew being migrated to another server doesn't remove or change any items they interacted with on their last server. The only thing that changes during migration is which server your crew, boat, and anything currently on board are on. A migration does not affect anything else on the server.
