AFK'ers Never Disconnect

  • We had an AFK'er so we put him in to the brig. He didn't go away. We scuttled the ship and he didn't go away. After 5 hours he was still AFK. This should not be possible IMO. Btw, releasing him and putting him back in the brig he never show back up. I'm assuming this is a bug when someone afk's and dies then dc's while dead.

  • @aliasmask He wasn't afk. That's a presumption, even if he's spinning in circles. He may very well be doing something else while you gather treasure, since obviously you didn't want him to participate.

He was AFK when I joined the crew. We didn't do anything for around a half hour before we decided the throw him in to the brig. The ship had no resources and we needed his vote to skuttle, so we threw him back in to the brig to get it done. We never saw him again after the skuttle. I assumed he died and never came back since throwing him in the brig didn't produce his body. He wasn't in the after life either. I think it's game bug and we just lose out on a crew slot.

  • @aliasmask AFKers do disconnnect... If they are standing completely still. People are using all kinds of ways to stay in the game while they are actuallly not on their computer. (Could be as simple as a program that presses the space bar every 5 seconds.)
Many of these people kill themselves, then go AFK in the Ferry so people don't even realise they are there.
Honestly, my tip would be to always check the Ferry if you join a crew and can't find 1 member and if he is AFKing there, leave so you don't make him any gold. :/

  • @aliasmask All I'm saying is that being idle doesn't necessarily mean they aren't sitting there watching a movie or something while dead or in the brig. They may very well be overseeing their character, just not doing anything but staying logged in.

  • They're 'rubber-banding'. It's an exploit...

... though, I do wish the AFK disconnect was longer than what it is, and had a notice atleast 60 seconds prior to being kicked.

  • @Admiral-Tweedle & @LogansDadToo
I've removed your posts as they're off topic and breach the Sea of Thieves Official Forum Rules under Spamming, Baiting and Trolling.

Also want to remind you both of the Pirate Code and Article 3.

Disputes Are Settled upon the Waves

None shall quarrel or overly dissent against another crew, but let every engagement be settled by sword, pistol and good seamanship.

  • I believe a way to combat people using tricks like the elastic band on the controller to avoid being booted is to have a vote to kick for idle players. So you need majority votes to then give the player a prompt, make the prompt random, like with controller, a controller combination, or with pc, set areas to click on in sequence, and then 2 mins to do it in. So if they truely are afk, they wont be there to do the prompt and then will get kicked

It wouldn't help on the sloop. I believe Rare is smart and capable enough to know how to figure how how to detect, and stop, that sort of behavior without user input.

  • Yeah I have seen that happen a few times it's so frustrating. I usually leave the game and come back with a new crew or start over with the current crew to keep that kind of cheater from making gold while doing nothing to earn it. I would happily play with a newb or someone who is not good at the game but AFK to get free gold is scummy.

  • I've actually had a crewmate share an anecdote with me recently in game. The remark?

He "has a friend" and this guy 'rubber-banded' his controller after a log in. He found an isolated cave and started himself "running" into a wall.

    He went to work.

He went to his pc and realized he was 12k richer.

    The above comments are correct.

My resolution to issues like that? Leave the current game. Rejoin another with the friends you have made.

  • @dumy2008 I've been on a galleon with friends before, and needed to step away for a few minutes. Tried putting a rubberband on to spin in circles, but eventually I just stopped spinning and got disconnected anyways.

  • @daddy-sanctus mainly happens coz the controller will disconnect over time unless its plugged in. This is why vote to kick idle would be best. As a dad, i sometimes have to do the school run in the middle of a voyage, and crewmates want me.to keep my space

  • I made a suggestion on the forums that I hope Rare considers. It's a fun version of the player kick. There should a condition that qualifies a pirate to be kicked which leads to them walking the plank.

  • Vote kick is too easily exploitable.

However, if multiple crews join an AFKer and flag them as AFK then leave, it should kick him and add a counter for exploiting. Accrue too many and they should get a temp ban with increasing duration each incident.

They may get a few thousand gold for going AFK, but they'll earn a ban for when they actually want to play.
