Spawned on islands
Can't be cashed in
Lights up the ship with a golden radiance
Leaks gold over time (credits crew automatically)
Floats in water.
New chest type - Midas Chest.
Hmm, I like the name but could do more with it than just gold constant gold, maybe turn-inable, but it will slowly turn the player golden over time eventually freezing the player in place as a golden statue or something dropping it will reverse the effects. On the ship it slowly turns the ship gold till it sinks making get to a outpost asap or stop along the way to unload it and let the ship revert to normal before loading it back up.

The idea is it lights up whoever's holding it like a beacon. (Come plunder me) but rewards you for looking after it.
It'd foster a capture the flag type of gameplay.

No gold without turning in. Maybe have it on a timer so you can't turn it in right away.
The point is you get rewarded for holding it... But it makes you a target.
So, it would be a mostly golden chest shining brilliantly with a few gems sprinkled here and there, and a kingly bearded face that demands honor and respect? I can diggit! Yaargh!
I like the idea, but I'm not sure if it'd be for better or worse. I like the name, though. 'Midas Chest'. Fantastic.

I got that, I just don't like it. Gold is made by selling at an outpost, and until you do it's up for grabs. This is part of the game's core philosophy and I see no need to change it. Having to wait out a timer would serve the same purpose of making you fight to keep it for a while.

No. If you can cash it in then it just goes away. It needs to be a permanent item on the map handed from pirate to pirate.
@mmountain so... basically i can find one, hide in some crazy cave nobody is going to look in at least a few days, rubberband a controller and afk to millions?

I'd find you. The chest should make your ship visible from a distance. Much like the skull fort symbol. Activated only when stowed on a ship.
I'd be down for this. It would definitely add to the PvP side of things which is what I enjoy most about the game.
If the chest vomited out gold every so often that would be neat, but it would have to be a relatively small amount each time and spaced out enough as well. It would also have to disappear eventually though so you couldn't just farm it for hours. A chest can only hold so much gold after all.

The main reason we only get gold for turning in the chests is because lorewise, the chests are secured by a special locking mechanism that only the Gold Hoarders know how to unlock. If a chest is spitting out gold every so often then there's no reason the crew who holds it couldn't pick it up and pocket it.
I feel like implementing this would add a nice bit of variety to spice up a session every now and then. And it wouldn't take way from the standard turn in since those chests would still be everywhere.
The devs just put up a video about adding new mechanics and ways to play the game. So long as it makes sense in the game lore I don't see why it shouldn't be added.

Maybe each chest has a maximum amount of gold in it. Once it's empty it needs to be dumped on an island to recharge.

hm, i see, still, running away is way too easy at the moment. It would promote the worst kind of pvp: The 2 hour long chase into the wind

Again I feel like this would result in people being able to farm it for too long. As a short and profitable event that can expire this would work well.
The chest would need to disappear after a set amount of time. Or it could just turn into a castaway chest after its effects wear off and then it could be turned in for another 80 gold or so.
It would just be a fun addition to the game. Personally I don't really care about my faction rep since Legend status isn't really worth working towards yet (in yesterdays patch they added 1 set of cosmetics for legendary ships and it's the ugliest set of purple and teal).
By the time Legend is worth working for I'll probably already be there just by flucking about.
@hellzheadsdown brilliant idea brv. They should consider. If u pick it up u gotta hurry to ur ship else ull turn to gold and wont be able to move making ur vulnerable. If u drop it the effect is reversed. If its on ur shipur ship starts turning gold and slowly dips down the water level till it all gold and sinks. When the ship turns gold it could start twinkling brightly so those afar can see it.
I assume this would be easier for devs as they've got the mechs already. Just a little bit of chest of sorrow mech with a dash of golden skeleton mech and a splash of cosmetics and bake for 30 mins.Instead of a chest that just "leaks" free money over time while you have it, I think it should instead be a "Midas Coin", an item about the same size and shape as a stronghold key but made of solid gold and with a much brighter glow, that can spawn very rarely (about as rare as the grog chest) and only in caves or in a stronghold vault.
While the Midas Coin is on your ship it will pick one item of loot (not including animals) you have on board every 10 minutes and upgrade it by one tier, so say you only have a castaways chest on board, after 10 minutes it becomes a seafarers, then 10 minutes after that a marauders, and then finally after another 10 minutes it becomes a captains, if you have multiple different types of chests/loot on board then it will always start with the lowest tier items first, picking randomly between items of the same tier.
This way you can't really just try to hide somewhere and free-farm it because you have to actually keep on acquiring new lower tier loot for it to have something upgrade, but if you can keep it on board for a decent length of time then having it would basically make all non-merchant voyages automatically more profitable because you would likely always have enough time for a newly found low tier piece of loot to upgrade at least once before you can make it to the nearest outpost with it, and even crates/antiques you find randomly could be upgraded to the next tier up in the same way.
I would also suggest that the Coin CAN be turned-in to the GH vendor for a few thousand gold and decent amount of rep similar to a stronghold chest, but obviously once you turn it in you can no longer make use of it to upgrade further chests so it's always more profitable to try and hold onto it for as long as possible.
Not bad idea but expect people would run into the nearest cave and hide. Would have to appear on Map or at least make it that it only appears during daylight and needs to be kept out in open. I.e under the sky. Could add achiev for holding for full day. Would add some differant scenarios. Choose between being on your boat sailing and fighting or some sort of island def. Stay where you find it and defend it from other players.

I love this take on the idea. It would mean that to avoid it turning your ship gold someone would always have to hold it, putting you a man down until you hand it in. Maybe once you're completely covered in gold you start to take health damage too, making it a bit of a hot potato.
Would be a hard one for solo players though!
@ch4o5bl4d3
Sounds interesting. It should be somewhat easy to spot that a ship is holding that coin tho. Not like skull in the sky easy, but maybe the ship could sparkle a bit, or occasionally there would be a godray / lightray touching the ship.Anything that encourages hoarding loot would be cool, as long as it doesnt punish for handing in loot early. Some people don't have the time to play all day so we gotta keep that in mind.

Floats in water.Spawns in stronghold, gives 10,000 gold over 30 minutes, each minute the lights grow brighter and brighter. At 15 minutes it reaches maximum brightness but only pays out 2,500. At this point the lights can be seen over the horizon.

It could work both ways as long as the chest keeps dropping coin it's still rising in vendor price. That way you can use the gaining gold as a visual to show that it's still not time to cash in, but you wouldn't reward the players too much.
So you pick up the chest, you shine bright to be seen far away no matter where you hide and the crew starts gaining 10g per 10sec or something. Every 5 min it'll be worth 800g more to vendor. After you hold on to it for 60 min the chest will stop spewing out gold but is worth 10k for handing it in.
@nebenkuh Yeah, I was thinking something along the lines of once the coin is on your ship, all of the ships lanterns turn to gold and begin to glow on their own even if not "lit", and if any player within rendering distance looks at the ship through a spyglass/sniper rifle then each lantern should give off the same glint as if a player was there looking back through a spyglass of their own.
Also I do like the idea that while you are carrying the coin as a player your characters skin should turn pure gold and you get slower the longer you hold it (though never enough to come to a complete stop), with the effect wearing off over 5-10 seconds if you drop it, and with your entire character model giving off the same glow as with the lanterns mentioned above while under the effect.
@ch4o5bl4d3
Like the lantern idea a lot. But I think just the light being always on and golden would be enough, no need for the scope glare. And I think the coin itself should glow rather than the player. Having the person carrying the coin slow down would be overkill, you're already slower when carrying stuff.
If you can just find these coins at random, it would be possible for more people to have one, so it shouldn't be extremely visible, just enough so you can notice it if you pay attention imo. Some awesome ideas here. I haven't read the full thread so I'm sorry if I'm repeating what anyone else said, but how about having the chest grow more valuable over time, and the "golden glow" become visible from longer ranges as the chest increases in value? That way you'd get the C.T.F./Keep the Case style gameplay but the game lore (referring the Hoarders near-aporcryphal locksmithing skills) stays unchanged. Instead of the cash ticking directly into your account it ticks into the chest, and the team who finally manages to sell gets it all?
That seems like a nice balance between the two slightly different options...
Just my 2 cents.I like this idea too. Another implementation of a chest that grows in value over time is one that grows in value depending on what else is on the boat. It could essentially act as a multiplier - the more treasure is on the ship the more the Midas Chest is worth. That way ships won't just run and hide. They need to continue doing voyages to add value to the Midas Chest.
