Pirate Magic

  • A really cool game mechanic that would fit the lore of SoT would be magic.

    • introduce purchasable spell scrolls (buy from the OoS)
    • Spells to be used in combat (i.e. fireball)
    • Spells to be used as utilities (i.e. walking light--a light that follows you around, would be helpful when fighting shadow skellies)
    • Spells to be used on your ship (i.e. temporary cloaking, useful for ambushing enemies--hides your ship from sight, but you can still be heard)

    These types of things would add HUGE variety to how people play the game, plus, magic is always fun.

  • How about something more realistic like.....

    • Tossing Firebombs at ships from your ship-

    • Being able to do flame damage with cannon balls on top and mid deck that must be put out by WATER BUCKETSSSSSSSSS

    • Bottle of Rum MalaTov Cocktail

    • Repairing sail masts from damage

    Ill give you one magic spell but its a smelly burp that you light on fire that blazes all enemies in a cone in front for 5 seconds burn damage unless in the water.

  • The problem with purchasing items that give you an edge in combat is some players will be able to afford them more than others and it would divide players on a playing field. I think Rare has stated that they won't implement anything like that. We're all equal on the sea right now, given the same tools, but I agree. We have a lot of magic and mysticism in the world of Sea of Thieves, so maybe giving the player some form of magical item, like a skull necklace or charm, that would assist you in your exploration or even combat. Order of Souls is my favorite faction, I'd like to see something like this.

  • I just thought of something.. What if you're given an enchanted item, like a skull necklace or charm as I stated before, and with it you could temporarily repel the undead? Enchanted items would have a limited use, and to recharge them you'd visit the Order of Souls vendor. Makes sense to me.

  • Spells to make your ship and crew invisible?
    We would never see another ship again in any server.
    I can hear the PvE crowd screaming ''SHUT UP AND TAKE MY GOLD!". 😄

  • @shambow I definitely am on board for more realistic things as well, but I’m one who is usually pulled into the mystical side of things (something pirate lore is rich with)

  • I've recommended the same thing, but take my upvote anyway. I think magic would be a great "progressive" feature to add that is available for all to achieve if they pursue it.

  • @grandmythic7 I agree that something like this (any addition to game mechanics) needs to be available to all characters, and I was thinking that the scrolls would be purchasable as one-time-uses for about the same prices as voyages. They would also need to be governed by a stocking system (you can only buy them once a day, or while a skull cloud is up, or something along those lines).

    I don’t think the idea is completely useless (and I’m pretty sure you don’t either), but it would definitely need to be kept in balance!

  • @nenikakamen Did you really just suggest that we become mages in a pirate game? Some sort of voodoo or something could be interesting but...fireballs, invis? This isn't World of Warcraft my man.

  • @blg-strong-dad I suggested that players should be able to access the magic that already exists within SoT (the OoS is completely based around magic, skeletons exist, there is a Ferry of the Damned, you come back to life 30-80 seconds after dying, and your ship magically respawns no matter how many times you crash it into the pier of Plunder Outpost). Things like fireballs could exist in this world filled with magic, but if that aesthetic doesn't please you, and you want a voodoo-vibe, then think of them as witch-bolts. Nevertheless, voodoo is magic in the same sense that wizardry is, and I'm simply suggesting ideas that could tap into a world that is so obviously filled with magic.

  • Some ideas could be:

    • Shark-bite resistant
    • Summon giant fog bank around ship
    • Extra lung capacity underwater
    • Player takes less damage from cannon fire
    • Summon sharks nearby (fun when people are trying to board you)
    • Appeasement (befriend a low level skeleton)

    Possible tie this into the Order of Souls magic.

  • @nenikakamen I would like to see some expansion on the mystical side of the games universe but I just don't think us having access to magic spells (especially combat oriented) would necessarily feel right.

  • This isn't world of warcraft or lord of the rings lol. Pirates don't do magic.

  • Instead of things you buy how about cursed and mystic treasure. I have suggested this before in My post.
