I am really looking forward to playing The Hungering Deep. I was just thinking... I am pretty sure there is going to be more explorable underwater areas, maybe "The Kraken's Lair" or something like that. I also think theres going to be AI Mermaids in these new underwater areas. In general its going to be really cool. BUT what if we could get a new type of "boss" like the kraken? Only this time it's... THE MEGALODON. Personally i think that could be really cool. What do you guys think?
Megalodon - The Hungering Deep
I'm 100% sure on the aggressive mermaid AI. As for more underwater exploration areas I think they're finally going to make use of the caves underneath those uncharted islands. They didn't mention anything about new areas to explore until the "Forsaken Isles" update coming in the summer.
I didn't even think of the Megalodon, but I'm not entirely sure how they could make that an interesting boss fight. The cannons on the ship can't aim very low and the most I could see the Megalodon doing is ramming the ship or biting the bottom of the hull to cause holes. Getting in the water with it would be a terrible idea as fighting regular sharks can already be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing (that said my brother killed 8 sharks guarding a pair of skulls we stole while waiting for our ship to get back to him).
Honestly I think I'd prefer it if they just made the Kraken a more interesting encounter (with actual loot like they promised in their dev talks).
@subaqueousreach I'm curious as to why you're so sure about the aggressive Mermaid AI - I'm someone who would love to see more involvement from mermaids, but I'm a little unsure of whether they're going to be part of the Hungering Deep... sounds more like something with big teeth to me.
Well for starters they talked a bit about it in a couple dev talks, but there's also this tweet that came out a couple weeks ago with the following images:
Concept art for enemy mermaid creatures in the Sea of Thieves lore book. Would you want them to occupy the seas?
@subaqueousreach There's actually quite a bit about them in the Tales book, I'd love to see them added in game :)
I'm excited to see them added as well. I'm very big on exploration in video games and it didn't make sense to me that there was so little to explore under water when they've added so much detail to the ocean floor areas.
@slayervictordk I disagree with this statement i dont think this prehistoric beast will be in the game. One reason for that is it is not meant for a pirate . It will probably be a leviathan something better than that
@slayervictordk and it would also be something that would fit into pirate folk lore like the ingame cave paintings

GIANT ENEMY CRAB!!
based in Realism surely ;)
EDIT: I realise a PS meme might not be well recognised in a MS forum. I'm riffing the Sony E3 2006 presser
I very much want this. There's paintings of giant crabs all over Crook's Hollow. I want to fight them. And eat them.
The lore book tells of one captain who discovered an underwater meeting place for the merfolk. He needed their counsel, and according to an old pirate legend he left an earring as a message of parley to the merfolk.
They did meet with him, then departed. Leaving the earring behind to be recovered by the captain. Pirates and merfolk must have had a pact in place, some accord or agreement.I think it's likely a merfolk faction may arise.

Didn't you know about the harpoons stuff?
It has already an concept art I think.
Maybe this new weapon are designed to kill new underwater threatsI'd personally prefer something new instead of just a larger shark... The Kraken allows for interesting mechanics like getting grabbed and such, but what sort of interesting mechanics can you involve in a giant shark? You get swallowed whole and gotta survive inside? That's about the end of my list of ideas. If you've got them then do share, I'm just not really sure how it'd boil down to anything other than a giant bullet sponge that chases after you in the water.

Well I was thinking that the Megalodon only spawns inside the storm. He then creates a giant whirlpool, that means you will take in alot of water. While that is happening you have an increased chance of getting hit by lightning and you also have to fight off the Megalodon(the figthing mechanics will be that he bites your ship and is stuck under your ship for a while making it even harder to steer. While he ist attached to your ship you need to use your sword to get rid of the teeth that is stuck inside the ship. When you have destroyed a teeth they will leave a hole in the ship. When it isn't attached to your ship and it swims around underwater you have to use your cannons against it). Of course you also have to try getting out of the whirlpool or you could fire your friend into the eye of the whirlpool where you will find some treasure.
I really have no idea of how this fight could be, this is just what i think would be cool. But probably won't happen, lorewise and it doesn't make any sense. But would be cool.

Wow thats an excellent idea, I really want to see that ingame!

Woah, a leviathan! That would be sooo cool to see!
A harpoon gun would be nice to have, but all of the guns already work just fine underwater. That said there's lots of concept art for things that aren't in the game. The only reason I believe mermaids are a sure thing is because of the timing of the tweet in my earlier post. "Hey, would you want mermaids in the game?" 2 weeks later, "Hey everyone, the first update is called The Hungering Deep!"
My issue with fighting the Megalodon is more about how the fight would work as a whole. If it functions like the normal shark, but bigger and with special actions to hit the ship, it would be very unlikely we could use ship cannons to fight it.
If we do have to jump in the water with it that's another issue. We're not very agile in the water and a Megalodon should be able to kill us in one hit (if it didn't I'd be even more disappointed). I don't want to spend half of the battle on the Ferry of the Damned, only respawning long enough to jump in the water, get a couple shots off and then die again. That would be akin to the gold skeleton fights on top of mountains and away from water.
I'm not saying I wouldn't like a Megalodon in the game. That would be pretty cool if they incorporated it right. I just don't think it's going to be coming with this update.
@subaqueousreach the fact those concept arts are things that aren't in the game already doesn't mean it won't be. It could be future releases.. we've seen the roadmap for content and still a lot of unnamed DLC and a lot of items and mechanics we saw in tests long ago which isn't in the game yet... I ll keep my hopes.
About megalodon, yeah I think it would be cool if you would need to jump in the water to kill it...
We'd need to adjust our tactics and read its movement to know when it would attack us and rush to step up on the ship.. like regular sharks, we know when they speed up it's when they'll attack us.. its attacks could damage our ship too if it touch the wood. So we'd need some one repairing.
And unlike the Kraken it could follow our ship and damage it if we don't kill the shark.
Like Kraken it could bite the ship and lock it within its jaws. We would need to hit it to make it let go. Could bring with it more regular sharks to complicate our task.
The harpoons could deal more underwater damage than another weapons.I don't know, there's a lot of possibilities ... Let's wait first for megalodon confirmation 😉
anyone every played RE4? that huge lake monster fight is what im thinking for a shark encounter with the harpoons, have to get into a row boat which you can be knocked out of if your not careful. Or heck, maybe the shark can knock you off the sloop or galleon if you're too close to the edge when it rushes your ship (also creating like 4 holes on impact), that way the harpoons can be on the main vessel. Either way, you have to try to avoid the ramming by filling its face with harpoons while its rushing you. If you dont get say 2 or 3 harpoons into its face it rams the boat possibly sending people over board where he will eat you (1 hit kill) if you dont get back on the boat fast enough and also damaging your ship. Maybe it will circle around and dive down to try to surprise you as well from different directions.

What about crab people? Seen plenty of paintings of them attacking people (mermaids too). Perhaps it will be a mis-mash of sea creatures or davey Jones style mutant pirates attacking our outposts? Hmm curious...
Hmm that would actually make a lot of sense! That could also be how the crab paintings got there in the first place. Maybe the crabs rose from "The Hungering Deep" and is trying to take over the world. It would be cool to have it as an AI enemy.
@subaqueousreach mermaids will be the AI threat in the cursed sails not added in the hungering deep. All the Dlc fits together and the mermaids are cursed pirates cursed pirates cursed sails Dlc.
