Hate to break it to you, but every game is "repetitive"

  • I know I am gonna get some serious flack for this. But please keep in mind I am not saying games don't feel repetitive.
I see a lot of complaints about SoT being repetitive. I want you to know that I understand what they mean. But when you think of games to compare SoT too, what comes to mind?
For me nothing. We have had open world games. We have had PvP games. But when it comes to the PvE and PvP being shared at the same time. Then having solo players in the same servers as 4 man crew. Nothing comes to mind. Just like so many new IPs, Rare is learning. But they are not doing it Willy nilly. They are listening to the community and understand we need to be kept in the loop of game development and they cannot make the game better without our help.
As for the "repetitive" gameplay. Pick another game you are playing right now. Fortnite, pubg, halo, madden, fifa, call of duty, skyrim. Each has its own repetitive gameplay. But is how much fun you have in that 30 seconds to point A to point B. Or the 5 minutes from A to B.
Again, I understand that the 3 factions in SoT have fetch quests and that can be very repetitive. But if you are finding the game boring after a couple weeks of playing and finding it repetitive. Then this game might not be for you. I am not trying to make anyone feel bad for finding the game repetitive. But if you are complaining about that one feature over and over. This game is probably not for you.

I hope to see you all on the seas in a battle or a friendly wave as we sail by each other. The roadmap was exciting and I am sure some if you will return.

    Love,
    HHD

  • @personalc0ffee
After 20 years of having this "repetitive" discussions. You are the first person to bring up "core gameplay loop"
    Thank you for the reply
I hope you are enjoying the seas

  • l**o Rare is listening and only paying attention to what they already decided they wanted to do before "listening" to the community. The reason people point our correctly that SoT is super repetitive is because the three factions are almost identical. It's three slight variations on go to island collect x and drop off x at outpost. They don't have any real delivery stuff, no escort missions just no other things to do besides sink ships. The skeleton forts are a nice break of the monotony but they take so ridiculously long to respawn that it hardly counts. You can disagree but all the word salad you can type won't make your OPINION any more or less valid than everyone else's.

  • Fortnite, each match will be different, maps are procedural, location of the objectives will be different, perhaps some hidden basements will offer hilarious chance for wall launcher shenanigans, players will build different kind of fortresses and tunnel traps, four different classes.

So yeah, there is a limited number of missions but every match will feel different.

In SoT, except the riddle quests, well, one chicken hunt will be like the next one, skeleton captains will fight the same way always, and with chest in a cross the only change will be the location of the cross. The game needs more tools to break this feeling of repetition: NPC ships, more NPC's in the world, more secrets, more work in the environment, some kind of scenario puzzles, more fauna, more things to do, more of eveything.

  • @personalc0ffee ah, the lovely excuse "the journey is the reward", I have used it myself in the first days after release.

But no, after some days human cannonballs and forts get old. The game needs tons of content and new ways to play that content, a 4th, 5th or 6th fetch quests alliance will not fix this game.

Hours in a game are not a proof of enough content, yeah, you enjoy the game, you don't mind the repetitive tasks and lack of depth in mechanics, missions and exploration. Hell, I enjoy the game too but I know it needs more to keep me engaged.

I don't know how many hours I have played this game, XBox App on PC doesn't list it. Surely I have played it hundred hours at least, but it says nothing, I have enjoyed a lot games of 10, 20 hours, hours is not content.

Do you play 7 Days to Die?, it's one of those survival sandbox games with zombies. You spawn in a dangerous zombie world and that's all, there are zombies that want to eat your brains and each 7 days there is a big horde at night. No storyline, nobody holds your hand, just survive, do it your way, build a fortress, or hide in buildings or underground or use a bike to flee the horde, you are free to write your own story, but the game won't get old so fast because there are enough tools to give you a real feeling of freedom and creativeness to overcome the challenge.

You are trying to convince yourself that this game isn't far more repetitive than the ones you mentioned.

  • @happy-happy-die Sure. Life is repetitive. Let's remove all nuance from analysis of topics until there's nothing to talk about, maybe the critics will just "go away."

Every game is repetitive because it relies on Update() code loops. Durr.

  • @personalc0ffee dijo en Hate to break it to you, but every game is "repetitive":

@lobofh You say hours aren't content but yet your'e still playing. What are you playing if the game has no content?

You've gotten more than your worth for your $60 so why are you complaining?

Like this is what gets me, people complaining it isn't worth $60 but then paying $15 to go to a 2 hour movie.

There is content coming, simmer and wait. You have your roadmap, it's time to stop complaining. Not to mention if anyone bothered to buy the art book and lore book, you'd know what's waiting in the wings.

Am I still playing?, do you live with me to know it?, no, I didn't play the game in the last 10 days. You are nobody, neither, to pontify if I got worthy content for my €70 ($60 will be for you) and please, spare me the excuse about the $15 movies.

Listen, this is not a story driven singeplayer game, 60 hours for this kind of game, or 100 hours mean nothing. In games as a service and MMO's the measure of sucess it's if players want to play this game in a very long term. I played Destiny 1 thousands of hours, I abandoned Destiny 2 after 50-100 hours, from your standpoint Destiny 2 fared well for me, but no, it was a failure.

Got it, now the new excuse is going to be "you have your roadmap", like "it's a beta" was before. The roadmap means nothing, we continue with this discussion when the first major content gets released.

  • @happy-happy-die Hate to break it to you but some games that are repetitive are fun for longer times and others aren't.
