Enemy Nameplates & Stealth

  • Enemy Nameplates

Nothing is worse than trying to sneak up on enemies from the water or in the dead of night, only to have them see a bright white nameplate floating above your head - in some circumstances you can even see nameplates through ships!

To solve this frustration I believe enemy nameplates should be affected by light - given that lanterns, boat lamps, and island-based torches / fires are already a core part of the game, it's a mechanic that will be familiar to Players.

Essentially when an enemy is hidden in shadow, their nameplate does not appear. If they enter an area of light (whether it be a Player's lantern, a ship lamp, a torch, daylight, etc) their nameplate will appear. When they return to the shadows, after a small delay, their nameplate will disappear again.

Green Nameplate = Friendly - White Nameplate = Enemy

    Gains

    • Players can actually use stealth now and it becomes a viable and interesting strategy
    • Hiding will become an activity Players can participate in
    • 100% gives a reason to keep your ship lamps on - don't want Players sneaking aboard your ship? Keep those lamps on, but risk other ships seeing you at night!
    • It gives the Player lantern another mechanical use and will encourage Players to regularly check their ship on voyages for stowaways
    • It lets Player's sneak around in the water without being spotted from afar

  • @bodhislam yes! I love all of it, to expand further, give us a slow but low crouch walk, quiet. And to match that in the water, give us a stealth swim, its much quieter but much slower, still makes a unique sound upon grabbing the ladder though, the alert among us should be rewarded.

And to go in a completely different direction, let me hide inside, and move whilst wearing, a barrel. “Hmmm it’s just a barrel.”

  • @bodhislam i just saw your reddit post, dude... you need that gif here. Great work!

  • @solidsnakemig Oh no! I have no idea why the embedded gif wasn't showing up! Thanks for the heads up!

  • interesting concept, would love to see it ingame. would make nights be a little more stressful at times.

  • good idea !

  • Yes, yes and yes. No further remarks.

  • @bodhislam Sorry mate, I like most of your ideas but I can only see it favouring the PvP aspect.
If anything I would support the changing of white (non crew members) being changed to a more distinguished red. Like soul captains.

Perhaps that's something Rare could think about to sync with other suggestions of PvP flags. If both parties have PvP rep the game tags could be turned off for stealth mode or red to warn commonly PvE players.

  • @solidsnakemig There is a 'stealth' swim. It's called swimming under water. The only time you make noise when swimming is when you are surfaced.

  • Unfortunately obscuring gamertags is a big no-no on Xbox live. Players need to be able to see your gamertag easily as a rule to support the mute/report/block and Ban features of Xbox live. Ubisoft occasionally tried to make stealth multiplayer game modes and each time it devolved into a griefing, cheating mess.

  • @tyler-wilkens its not a stealth swim at all, you can hear it from the deck and you can clearly see names, this should be a new mechanic with separate sounds.

  • thumbs up

  • Actually a great idea

  • While I appreciate the idea I disagree. I like the name tag as is.

  • I am completely ok with this IF you cannot board a ship while it is moving faster than 75% of its possible speed? The boarding action is just too easy during fights. It needs to be more difficult. If you want to be stealthy and swim aboard - Ship parked No issues. Ship just starting out - no issues. Ship FULL SAILS - No way!

  • @lord-sphinktus have you ever played Ark? I don’t think this is true at all. (i have both console versions and xb you see no gamertags unless you opt in, on ps4 you see it everywhere on every item, including a searchable player list)

  • @solidsnakemig I forgot about Ark, but it isn't really a good example, a lot of griefing goes on in Ark, griefing that wouldn't occur as often if gamertags where exposed. Being that Rare is first party(owned by Microsoft) they are going to follow the best practices established by long standing first party titles like the Halo series. There may be a work around eventually that allows stealth within Xbox live titles while still supporting mute/block/etc. But for now Xbox live can't risk having a stealth griefer curse at you or otherwise break the ToS and not give the victim tools to quickly mute/block/report/etc the offending player... It would just be sloppy design.

  • @lord-sphinktus Ark is not a good example no but it is a perfect one in this case, though i do imagine you hit the nail on the head with Rare being first party. A man of stealth can dream...

  • @bodhislam This is great man. Good work on a solid solution to a frustrating problem.

I really hope Rare takes a look at this!

  • @bodhislam This idea is fantastic. I hope it gets done.

  • @bodhislam
Definitely Support this Idea. Def would change the strategy quite a bit, I like the idea of turning on all the lamps when you suspect a stowaway is on board.

Funny Story: I tried sneaking on board an enemy ship with a gunpowder keg, and since I was in game chat, I decided to go "Radio Silent"so that the enemy wouldn't hear me.
Just I was coming up the ladder, my 2 year old daughter decided it was time to visit daddy at the sofa and proceeded to scream in my headset.
After the ringing in my ears subsided, I heard the enemy saying "I hear a baby, somebody is coming!!" D****t.
    Stealth Mission = Epic Fail

  • @bodhislam

I've suggested something along these lines, but your idea is definitely more fleshed out. I particularly like your little animation.

    +1

  • This is a great incentive to keep ship lights on. At the moment there’s no point in keeping the lanterns on, it’s the first thing everyone does when setting sail. I sneak aboard and hide on many ships, this would make me think twice about boarding a ship with the lights on. Love the idea!

  • Love this idea...

  • @lord-sphinktus I totally understand and appreciate your concern for the standards of both Xbox Live and Microsoft - however, it wouldn't be as if the Player's nameplates would always be hidden. A crew could easily keep their ship lamps illuminated or carry lanterns to see enemy Player's names - or in an even better example, during broad daylight you'd still see enemies names.

I feel as this would be a good in-between of having full visibility of nameplates, and turning them off completely.

@Psyperactive81 Haha they must have been so confused by a baby noise! Ha!

  • I'm of the opinion that non-group name plates shouldn't show until you're standing toe to toe with them, and maybe not even then. I also get annoyed by them showing up when you're trying to sneak around or hide.

  • Really great points. Currently, an enemy nameplate can only be seen if they are swimming close to the surface. If they are deep enough in the water you can't be seen. A simpler solution to the problem, that will give you similar results to your idea, is to just drastically reduce the proximity required for the name plate to appear.

  • I don't know why they DON'T have stealth in SoT already. Thieves.
    THIEVES.
Stealth is like at least 20% of it.

  • Love it! In order for the stealth part to work the devs would also need to hide the Mermaids from enemy players. That’s the next biggest giveaway that someone’s trying to board the ship!

  • Please rare, Add this please, I think what we have right now is bad and we need this, This is an Open PvP game afterall.

What's the fun when you see your enemy far away?

I wouldn't mind seeing a mechanic for someone to shoo away mermaids, or mermaids only coming when you call for help or something.
Like maybe shooing away a mermaid would be a tough tactical choice like you shoo them away, but they don't come back till you've died so it's a risk
"do I shoo away the mermaid, knowing failure means I'm stuck till death? Or do I risk the mermaid blowing my cover?"

No I can't agree. This whole thread is about giving the PvP players even more advantages which in my eyes is bad enough but to then hide the opposition's mermaid. That's not a ship boarding concern as much as an outpost camping desire.
You might as well say please Rare let us turn this game into a full-on PvP.

  • @rockinpodunk @Nerrollus I would totally be okay with that solution if it was that or nothing!

@Filthee-Mudblud Haha! This gave me a good laugh!

@HonorTheSoldier Hmm mermaid solutions... I'll get started on ideas.. ;)

  • @admiral-rrrsole

I can appreciate the concern of giving too much power to PVP players. I think there would just need to be some amount of balancing. If gamertags and mermaids are invisible to enemies, maybe the swimming and boarding sounds need to be more noticeable, or something like that. To prevent outpost camping, maybe the mermaids would only be invisible to enemy players for 5 minutes or so, and then become visible. I'm just throwing out ideas.

  • Yessssssss i want this so bad
