Magic chickens, polite pirates, and gallant galleons of PvPers, or, How to use your imagination to create your own story, (For those who don't get it.)

  • So it's Saturday night, I'm enjoying a few beers, but no mates online to play with, so set out solo in search of adventure, can't be bothered doing missions on my own, so opt for working on my tactics and PvP skills.
I call at a fort, and pick up a few kegs, but also happen across a chicken coup, so call at next island and grab a chicken. Now I'm tooled up, I go looking for action.
I soon spot another sloop and head for it, and it turn towards me the same. We pass parallel, and they, (It's a two man team) fire a barrage at me, but miss every shot, and then they perform a badly executed handbrake turn. I had not fired on them yet, and sensing they were maybe new to the game, decided to have some fun, (inspired by a Tavern Tale I had read a few days ago, but can't remember the author), I grab the chicken, jump over board, and swim towards them, uttering in broken English, " I bring you magic chicken", " Very good chicken, chicken make you rich" and the such like, they open up with small arms fire, still not hitting me, climb aboard, drop the chicken on the deck, informing them the magic chicken will bring them luck, and hop over board again, and swim to the mermaid only taking one hit, despite them continuously shooting at me. Once back on my sloop, I spin around 180, but can't see them anywhere, so my plans to come back shooting quickly go out the window. I guess they legged it now they've got such a valuable prize.
Whilst scanning the horizon for them I then spot a galleon parked up at an island, so set off towards them to see what fun can be had next. I approach cautiously, slowly in a wide curve, and am greeted with a few cannon shots, and a man swimming taking pot shots at me, they want to play I deduce, so put a keg on the prow, and charge in, ramming them amidship, and blow the keg as they kill me, taking two of them to the ferry with me. On the ferry we laugh about it together, and part amicably.
I respawn, and set off to find these chaps again in the hope we can team up for some fun, and as I'm getting closer to them another galleon sets about attacking them, so I opt to help them out, and attack their attackers with my cannons, but run aground next to their ship, as to long on the cannons. As I do so, one jumps aboard, and we quickly establish a pact, and plan to use my ship to engage the attacking galleon, we ram, and I board, getting below and killing two on repairs, before the remain two come down and kill me, I spawn back on my boat, which my new friend has repaired and readied for our next assault, in which we we boarded by all four enemy, we were killed and my ship sunk, as I spawned far away, but set off again to team up as agreed, again everybody had been jovial on the ferry, including the enemy.
I soon spotted what I thought was my new friends galleon at an island, so pulled up next to them, and greeted them as they swam to my ship, only to be greeted with "Do not shoot and we will not kill you or sink your ship", it was not my new friends. I was boarded and informed I free to go once they had relieved me of any treasure or supplies they wanted very politely, which I explained they were welcome to, as I was on a mission to hunt down and ram, board and extract revenge on the last galleon to kill me. They were really very nice bunch of pirates, polite, friendly and as they explained too, playing the game too. What a good bunch of robbing b****r I thought, as I set of again on my mission.
I soon found my target, they were engaging another solo sloop, so I joined the battle, and for 5 minutes or so we circled, twisted and turned, exchanging cannon fire, before they sent me to the bottom again, and to spawn far away. Whilst on the ferry I got a message, asking if I was the guy who had just been stop and searched, to which I replied yes to.
I didn't take long to spot my enemy again, and now they were chasing another galleon, possibly my friends I made a pact with, so off I chased hoping to intervene, as I got between the 2, someone jumped aboard, saying "Don't shot, I'm going to help", it was one of the polite pirates, it was them being chased, as the ran to an outpost to cash in. Together we quickly hatched a plan for him to board the chasers and drop their anchor, whilst I distracted with cannon fire, to give his mates time to cash in their haul, which we did successfully, though my sloop became a casualty, after the enemy boarded, in an attempt to gain the upper hand, but our action had thwarted their plans and they were duly sunk by polite pirates galleon, once they'd cashed in.
I made it alive onto the outpost, and the polite pirates rewarded me with a skull, for my action, we drank and played a tune together, added each other as friends, and they invited me to join their crew, as one was off to bed.
We did a few mission, and a skull fort lastly together, making for a profitable and very enjoyable nights gaming.
This is how you have fun in this game, keep an open mind, use your imagination, and play your own story, imagination has no boundaries, and there are many great players out there, be them fiend or foe.

  • I try to do this kind of stuff every time I play.

It never works because I can never find any polite people, ever.
    It's all hostility and toxicity.

  • Your story is fun and cute, unfortunately it also describes 90% of what you can currently do in the game, when it's not fetch quests.

You can use your imagination to watch clouds aswell, that doesn't mean you should pay 70 euros to do it.

  • Pirates Super Poosy and The Song42, I hope things in the game improve for you both, I understand how toxicity can crush peoples enjoyment, and the need for more content.
I was lucky that all I met in game last night were good sports, including the crew of my nemesis galleon, who all came across as jovial sorts when meeting on the ferry.
Hopefully things will improve all round as time goes on, and you'll both get the enjoyment to warrant the price tag.

  • I've had a number of positive encounters with other 1- 2 man Sloops during the course of play, but have yet to encounter a 'friendly' Galleon.

Another fine example of this occurred yesterday after picking up a message in a bottle quest revealing six chests on Chicken Island.

I scanned the horizons for sails. Finding none, disembarked and dispatched the roaming skeletons on the shoreline, before putting shovel to dirt on the closest 'X'. But as is the case with this type of quest, the first shovel strike initiated another round of combat with a skeleton crew, actually 3 rounds (3-5 each time) that took longer than I'd have liked.

I was about to get back to diggin' when a Galleon rolls up. I'm on the shore, and can't get to the sloop to attempt a get-away, so I hold up my lantern and tried to parlay through proximity chat that if they didn't kill me, I'd gladly split the treasures buried beneath our feet.

Apparently they weren't interested in obtaining easy treasure, choosing instead to kill my pirate, and sink my ship. Cool.

As per the new mechanics I spawned a long distance away with a new ship and set sail straight back to Chicken Island. On approach I noticed the only two items that had been on the previous boat, a gunpowder barrel and pig crate floating nearby.

I then proceeded to sweep the island, liberating it from all opposing skeletons and buried chests, including the chest I had initially found before the Galleon had attacked. Their crew hadn't even bothered to search the island! 2 Captains Chests, 1 Marauders, 2 Seafarers and 1 Castaway...All mine now because they weren't interested in a peaceful accord.

I've often thought about approaching another player in game and just asking if they would like a hand in completing their quest(s)...but haven't because I'd more than likely be on the receiving end of cannonball or blunderbuss. You never know until you try I suppose.

  • @qrikshank You never know. I scuttled my ship and sailed with a two man sloop of new pirates for several missions just for giggles. We were the dreaded 3 man sloop. I managed not to die and helped them defeat a couple skeleton captains. One of the better experiences I've had on SoT.
