Microtransaction pricing and expectations

  • Maybe, it will include all you can buy with in game gold and the pricing will be high enough so that they can make the actual game free to play.

  • @tangente-fut Yeah, I agree they need to work on the core content of the game. If the update turns out to be a cat and a monkey, you will be able to see the blaze from this forum miles away lol.

  • I think something really cool they could add (although I would prefer this to be a reward from some sort of event) Is kind of a ''curse'' That would turn your pirate into a skeleton at midnight and until the sun rises. It doesn't affect gameplay, its just a cool little thing to change it up while you play. It could have a cool animation when you transform and perhaps it could change some of the emotes. That could be another thing by the way, emotes. New dances and other things.

  • You never know fortnite has Vbucks, SOT could bring some form of in game currency instead lets use example as doubloons 200 doubloons could be £3.99 500 doubloon +150 free could be £6.99 a pet could then cost 500 doubloons little monkey outfits could cost say 150 doubloons, I prefer this method for micro transactions but that be I play warframe so I'm used to it.

Honestly they owe us $30 back of the $60 we spent for half a game . Im all for the cosmetic microtransations but its not a good time for them as they are in muddy waters.

This. Either they add 40ish bux of content or give us that much in thier shop currency. This game is lacking.

@eat1bread My crew actually just had this same discussion.

I feel that the pets are going to run $15, while the potions are going to run around $5.

Reason why, think about World of Warcrafts pets, and before 2 expansion they just followed around the person. SoT pets are said to have interactions to them.

I am ok with $15 per pet (I spent more on an ultimate skin for LoL) but if they are more then $20 I will prob pass.

**Please don't compare SoT with WoW :( **

The problem is we used to get content as part of the base game. Because of people like yourself, we now get a base game with a ton of content cut out of it and held back, to be drip fed to us throughout the games lifespan.

Honestly, it's not even a money issue. I just hate the system in general. It makes it pointless to grind for an item when someone else can just throw down the cash and get it within five minutes. I could do that myself, but then whats the point? The only items that have value to me in a game are the ones that have taken me a while to get, that I had to perform a difficult task for or even just the ones that have an extremely low drop rate.

Look at Warcraft, would the low poly mount 'Ashes of Al'ar' be still sought after if it could just be bought? It's sought after because it's hard to get, not because of how it looks.

I think you're confusing "cosmetics" with "content". I'm 100% behind as many items and skins as they can possibly cram into a microtransactions store, as long as they're cosmetic only.

I'm also not saying everything should be available in the store.

But at the same time, it might not matter much to me anyway, they lost their chance at keeping myself and my friends. We kinda require content or a steady stream of entertainment. And that's just not going to happen in SoT.

Take Battlefield 1 for instance, we play that all the time. It's never the same. Something hilarious always happens. TONS of different maps and game modes, all well populated.

I've come to expect the same kind of quality from games as you know you'd find in the next Red Dead Redemption, the next Borderlands, the next Battlefield or the next Grand Theft Auto. We don't have to guess, we all know they'll deliver and be amazing.

And those games will all have some sort of microtransactions too I'm certain.

Look at the example I used, the Warcraft mount. It's a cosmetic, no? It offers no functionality beyeond any other mounts in the game, yet it's sought after because of its rarity. Now imagine they let you buy it for $5. Is it still valuable? Would people still run the old content over and over every week to try and get it? Just because something is cosmetic doesn't mean it has no value. In fact, people actively seek out these items and spend hours and hours trying to get them. Would people camp out for the time lost proto in wow if it could be bought? Would anyone really care about a reskinned proto dragon if it wasn't rare?

Games need these rare items to give us things to search for, thus tying us to the game for a longer period of time. If I can just buy everything, why play? It's pointless.
I don't mind it if the store is separate, like in Warcraft. The items are separate, if people see them, they know it's a cash shop item and that's fine. But Warcraft has so many things to earn ingame, whereas this game doesn't. Fill the game up with things for us to earn before trying to milk us for cash.

I guess im in the minority where I'd much prefer to pay a regular $10 per month and have them keep adding things, but then if like you said, you have spent thousands, I can see why they implement these awful systems because you alone would spend about ten years worth of subscription fees, making it a far more profitable option.

And it's not just me, there's TONS of players doing it. They make insanely more off microtransactions now than the regular game itself.

But like I mentioned too, not everything should be for sale. And it shouldn't be cheap either.

Like you said too, WoW has tons of content and cosmetics in-game, this game has what, 5?

I would prefer a content rich base game, with the addition of a fully stocked microtransactions store.

However, why waste money on new clothes? No 3rd person so you'll only ever see yourself during emotes.

It's most games with microtransactions. It's not going to be a store with 10 items in it, each costing a buck or two.

  • @wturok No, they should have in-game pets that are rare and hard to get, and completely separate store bought pets. I hate the idea that it's somehow fair to put the same items ingame for absurd amounts of ingame currency. Split the content, cash shop only and ingame only.

  • Full wraith gear or gear that makes you look like a half skeleton half person. Pay $20 for it

  • @legandj That an stupid idea, splitting the content is not good when the content you have is so sparce.

  • how about giving us what we paid for first.... before asking for more money?

  • @eat1bread £5 for a pet! They are gonna be more expensive than that I bet my booty on it 😤

  • @neller2000 you sir have more money than sense!

  • Considering the conditions the product was released and knowing that the very first big patch is supposed to add microtransactions, i'll wait for them to actually add meaningful content and depth to the game, before even considering buying anything from the game store.

On the topic of prices, anything more than 10 euros is probably too much.

  • @wturok said in Microtransaction pricing and expectations:

@legandj That an stupid idea, splitting the content is not good when the content you have is so sparce.

So we should just let them throw everything onto the microtransaction store and have us pay for it? Or, alternatively, they could throw a small amount of cash shop only items into the game along with a ton of ingame only items. How is it a stupid idea? lol.

I agree, these items will likely be far more expensive than we are willing to happily pay, but this is at least an opportunity for Rare to see what people would be happy with paying, and with the company / game being on thin ice right now with players, I would hope they are at least interested in seeing our take on it before any prices are available to see.

  • 3-5$ seems reasonable for pets. I wouldn't buy consumables either. Clothing sets/ship customizations could be 1-5$ depending on how in depths they are. IPG re-roll potions could cost as much as 5$ to keep people from over using the IPG to generate "pretty" pirates. Hair dies could sell for as much as 2$, my wife really wants in game hair dies.

  • @marlon-grando6 said in Microtransaction pricing and expectations:

I'm hoping they take a page out of Fortnite's book and add new content at regular intervals via seasons or something, maybe once per 3/4 months at $15 to $20 a pop.

In a game where the rewards for grinding are strictly cosmetic it seems like allowing people to just buy them outright would be an odd choice. What would be the incentive to play the game at that point?
Yeah that was my thought also. Put cosmetics in the cash store and boom there goes the only real goal in the game.

  • I can see dropping $5-$10 for a pet or something along those lines. I don't want to buy $50 packs of "gold" or "jewels" that equates to money. I want an actual price in dollars for the specific item. I also will not purchase anything at all, if the the upcoming MTX store includes the stuff they have already held back, some of which was in the testing. See this thread for stuff that is "missing"

  • I feel like the game in it's current state is very expensive when you compare the available content to the amount of money you spent.

It's like The Sims 4. In the original game, you could hardly do anything. And then they start adding all the stuff they knew everyone wanted from the beginning (like pets) and charge people a lot money for it. In the Sims 4, they actually took toddlers out of the game (which The Sims 2 and 3 did have), only to add toddlers to it later so they could make more money. Not a fan of this system.

I feel like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a good example of a nice finished game, with good DLC / expansions that were actually worth your money (like Shivering Isles).

Or Overwatch, where they keep adding new things without charging you for it.

I don't think I would pay for any new content. A permanent addition like a pet, maybe. But like you say, I would never pay real money for consumables. Also, I feel like consumables make you stronger and that makes the game unfair. It gives rich people an advantage.

    We'll see I guess!

  • I understand they want to do microtransactions to pay the servers etc. But can't they make the game a real game first before adding microtransactions.

I paid 70$ for the game and other alot more, but there is no still no point in this game. Yes you can have fun with your frieds or meet new cool people. Yes the style of the game is sexy af. But yes you can only buy visuals and not very much. All people have same clothing, same ship and sail design (i think more than 95% have the red/black ship design and the skull sail, im right? ^^)

I really like the game. More voyage types and enemy types would be great since it's pretty weird to fight the same enemy types.

Imo they released too fast. With just a bit more work they could add much more content and a better shop system aswell. I really do not understand why microtransaction is already worth to think about.

I hope you're able to read my broken english :D I am no hater, I just love the concept of the game and i'm wishing it becomes more as it is at the current state.

    Please content first :'(
