Where to store live cargo?

  • Past few days I've been on the merchant grind (lvl 40), and my usual strategy has been to gather up a ton of coops/baskets, then sail off to collect as many as I can, then cycle through voyages to turn in what I have.

however, to break the monotony, because god merchant alliance is boring, I usually do every fort that shows up, so every 3 hours or so.
2 days ago, one of the forts turned into a poopstorm when 2 other galleons and a sloop tried to contest the fort, ofcourse we sank them, but in the aftermath, we noticed that a stray cannonball hit inside the Captain's cabin, killing all chickens, and a few others hit the port-side bow, on the middeck, where I keep snakes, and about 10 snakes died, only 2 survived...

So the next fort i did, I put them up on the topsails, figured it was the only safe place.
and it was, some 10 snakes survived the fort and galleon battle. As a bonus, I had a 2x gold snake 3x gunpowder voyage at the end.

as i came into port, lightning struck the crow's nest, exploded about 7 barrels and all snakes and chickens died.

L**O that sucks... That's the only place I would suggest. Maybe just stash them behind the wheel?

  • Honestly there's no 100% safe place to keep live cargo. The main deck is the "safest" for most situations, because cannons often aim for the water line, and lightning doesn't OFTEN strike the deck (but can). Additionally, livestock can't drown unless the ship sinks if they're on the top deck, and at that point it didn't matter where they were anyway.

  • Another nice thing about keeping them on the top deck is that most livestock values are fairly low in comparison to chests and skulls. So if its right there int he open and you do get boarded, better chance they may just grab one of them and run instead of going for a more expensive item that's harder to get to.

I also enjoy putting snakes above the ladders to dissuade unwelcome boarders.

that gets hit often though, from forts and other galleons alike :-\

  • snakes on the ladder, now there's a great idea.

Yes, but I would guess less often than inside the ship. When someone is trying to sink you, they're aiming at the lower decks.

  • Simply sell your livestock before attempting skull forts. Problem solved.

Having said that, the captain's quarters hit was a "one in a million" kind of fluke, therefore it would be your best bet.

    Happy sailing.
