Beyond the Horizon

  • I've played this game for some time now, since first alpha and still playing, but i'm not going to lie. I enjoy it so much but this game is nowhere close to complete. However that's okay because this is a kind of game that has set the foundation for something great that could last for years, I hope it does. It does have a good and eventful beginning, but will need more content eventually. There needs to be a reason why people return to these seas.

Theses are some ideas that i came up with that i would love to see in game. These ideas arn't fully fleshed out but no idea ever is.

Sunken Island: Raises out of the water on a new moon. Gathering loot from the bottom of the ocean bringing it up along with the dead. Being the darkest night this island is filled with ghost skellies, never seeming to end with hoards rushing your way. Your crew would have to work together rushing to the island and hunting for treasure before any other crew make there way to the same island. Lanterns would be the key to this island.

Broken Mast: in a cannon fire if a lucky shot hits the mast there's a chance of if breaking and falling into the water leaving your ship disabled. I would say it would have to be close to the bottom being the sweet spot. (reminder this is just an idea agree, disagree, or improve upon the idea)

    Ship improvements: (note one per ship costing gold to change it) There being a bunch of items that can change your ship ranging from;

    • Reinforced Hull: has a small chance to not make a hole when taking damage
    • Shipwrights Knowledge: 10-15% chance to not consume a board when repairing
    • Extra Fire power: on the back of the ship there would be an extra small cannon not shooting as far as normal but good for ships chasing you
    • Navel Ram: Strengthening the front of the ship for the most amount of damage while ramming other ships and decreasing the chance of you getting hole while your ramming (all i could come up with)

Navy: There being NPC Ships that want nothing but to sink every pirate ship out there. Another PvE hostile unit but this one mostly being on sea (well other than the Kraken)

Ghost ships: Just like the Kraken but fog rolls in and with it comes a new threat. This ship would be difficult to battle but will leave a small amount of plunder behind once its maybe even a special kinda chest.

Pirate bounties: At the tavern the Navy leaves bounties of players in the lobby. Making other players hunt other players looking for that bounty gold. Only the bounties holders would have a chance for the gold. So make sure you get them high bounties before you set sail. The bounty would say where they were spotted last. Talking to the tavern keep could give you info if the player was near last spotted near an island updating your bounty. Bounties would be given to players that have met requirements like Most kills in the lobby (other player kills), most amount of time in the lobby, maybe someone that's gathered most gold in the lobby.

Pirate Merchant: A special pirate vendor that sells random things each time he/ she ventures to an outpost near you. Maybe once a week they show up at a random outpost making you search them all for their exclusive goods. Selling everything from weapons, clothes, ship parts, hair styles, maybe even exclusive voyages.

Jolly Roger: I would love some way to create a jolly roger for me and my friends and make that flag infamous. I guess would be like clans in other games but when the crew is filled with the same players from the same group the jolly roger then their jolly roger would fly.

Vanity Loot: Maybe turning in treasure could give you a chance to get exclusive skins that you couldn't get any other way.

Curses: Finding loot or venturing where you shouldn't could curse you, leaving a mark on your hand (glowing through your gloves). Giving you an assortment of debuffs. Talking to the Order of Souls will help you and give you a task to dispel the curse. The curse staying till times up killing you or you completing the task. Dying by the curse the seafarer of the Dammed would charge you a fee. Charging you because your farther gone than usual making him reach farther to bring you back. (I a death fee is something people don't want but i feel its a fair trade, when you could avoid it. Also sailing treacherous seas is rough, and not everything is open seas and sunshine)

Song Choice: Holding an Instrument and holding "F" (on PC sorry console, Pickup button) would pull up another selection wheel where your shanties lie.

The Map expansion: Expanding the map bringing us new lands and new seas to explore.

Trading Company: Would be another group of to gain rep for but for these guys they are like an escort mission you bring an item to another outpost or you help protect another ship while it travels to the other outpost. Kinda like a bodyguard for another NPC ship.

Ship Repair: Having holes in your ship would weaken then hull making that same spot easier to reopen upon damage. The shipwright could repair all them holes and make your ship good as new for a small fee.

New Ship fee: We need a reason to want to keep the same ship and protect her. When a ship is lost to Davy Jones locker there should be some repercussions. (repercussions are a good thing as long as they are not over done or too steep) I didnt come up with this idea but i really thought it could work.

Also if Rare sees this know that i want this game to succeed. And i will say i don't know much about Rare but they're listening to the community and them throwing away the idea of death fee because of the players not liking that idea shows that they are listening. So they are already doing better than most games out there. That being said thank you for listening. And don't make content behind a pay wall, the game will fail if you do. I would be 100% a okay if there is buyable cosmetics.

  • I love all of these ideas. Though for the broken mast, I'd suggest different kinds of ammo for cannons, such as chain shot to disable the mast or heated shot to start fires. Could make for far more tactical combat, having different things to deal with. Suddenly bailing water is not the only use for the bucket!

As you said, the game is an incredible foundation for something special. What it is now is still a lot of fun, for me personally, but I am most excited by where this ship sails next.

  • @platypuserotica Yeah i thought of the chain shot but didn't include that lol. However that heat shot sound nice, i like. Hopefully this game will evolve into an something unforgettable like Skyrim.

  • @insanexjok3rx

I've suggested the ship upgrades in some depth. Lots of good ideas here. Especially like the Sunken Island.

  • @quixoticfolly Thank you! Sorry if i say anyone's ideas. If you came up with it first then you of course deserve the credit. Also just read it really great. Loved it!

  • Just to point out that Rare did actually test the idea of mast damage early on but decided against it.

Perhaps if it was only possible to disable the front and back sails on a galleon to slow it down but not disable it completely then I could see it being okay, but I don't think it should be possible to fully disable a ship just with one good/lucky shot.

  • I've seen Ghost Ships mentioned a lot. My idea for that is, it only occurs at night. You know how you can see other ship's lanterns from a good distance away at night? Well this would be glowing all over like the ferry of the damned or like how skulls do. Basically, it'd be easy to spot by anyone in the area. I can't remember how long the day/night cycle is, but you have to defeat it by sunrise or something maybe to get the loot. It could just be a random event too, just sailing on it's own until someone comes to fight.

Also, does the kraken appear at night? I've only seen it twice and it was daytime.

  • These ideas are fantastic.
    Especially the......
sunken island (this one is genius and would just be straight up spooky)
    curses (oooooh....what?! I'm in!)
    ghost ships (mandatory)
the navy (which some players are taking into their own hands /LOL)

I think the only idea that RARE will probably outright dismiss is the ship improvements. The only real changes for this game are going to be in the PvE, AI and cosmetics (although I truly hope not).

Rare seems very rigid on anything that will change the strict balance between players (and I'm certain that it's for the best).

If players and ships were unequal in any way.....this game would be atrocious.

  • Most of these are good ideas, except:

    1. Damage to your ship permanently weakening your structural integrity until you get it completely fixed at a shipwright. I dislike this concept, since I feel the problem isn't repairs are too fast, but materials are too readily available, and

    2. Absolutely, positively not on upgrades. It's been said at least a thousand times already, but RARE already confirmed that no vertical progression of that sort will be in the game at all.

  • @lil-fokker Cursed Island Raid Here's a more fleshed out idea of the sunken island. Hope you like. Also i have 2 posts about the same thing but this was the updated and what i feel to be better.

  • @platypuserotica Midas features !

  • @blam320 Yeah this post was old like second week old and i know a lot of the ship ideas were debunked.

I'm fine with much of the other features, though. Flag customization is a must, for sure. While I'm skeptical about some sort of Royal Navy, Ghost Ships are rumored to be the NPC threat that will arrive with Cursed Sails. Random vendors that appear on different islands would be nice, maybe as part of the weekly events. I would place them on the uncharted islands, to give more of a reason to seek them out and visit them.

The new ship fee, I dunno. It rewards avoiding PvP, and punishes going into battle unprepared for an attrition battle. I would have brand new ships spawn with no resources at all, to start.

I came up with a similar idea to yours with regards to bounties a while back. It basically involves a bounty trading co and a notoriety system that rewards PvP players for targeting each other.
