My tips as a mostly solo player

  • I didn't get to participate in the beta, but being anew player and logging in about 30 hours, I feel I can spread some tips I've gathered along the way. I've come across the people that are only out to kill, steal etc, yet they are never successful on me due to some things listed below.

    1. No matter what, before and after you sail, climb to the crows nest and check your horizons. It' may take an extra minute or so out of your time, but you need to make sure the coast is clear. If you see another ship, determine the direction it's going. If you notice it's coming towards you, you may want to reconsider the island you are on, depending on the voyage you are on.

    2. Don't horde treasure as a solo player. It may be a pain, but when you finish a voyage, offload your loot. You don't want to be caught even by a 2 man sloop, because they will most likely win and take your treasure.

    3. Always plan your path smart. Choose your islands and position your ship that will benefit your path to the nearest outpost.

    4. If you see another ship while sailing and they are getting closer, navigate away in another direction.

    5. When heading to an outpost, don't immediately drop anchor and rush on in. Take some time during approach with your scope and canvas the surrounding area. Conduct a wide circle (cut the pie) in order to check the coastline of the outpost for other ships. If you see another ship there, leave and head to the next outpost.

    6. And my most important rule I go by in this game, NEVER trust anyone. Simple.

If you all have more suggestions for solo players, I'd love to hear them.

  • Posted this in another thread. Seems appropriate to repost here.

    1. Never stay anchored. Always raise sails to slow speed. Drop anchor to fully stop, but raise anchor right away. Your ship won't move, and if you need to bail on a moments notice all you have to do is drop sail and you're moving.

    2. Always scout an island first. Circle the big ones, and keep an eye for sails on the horizon as you moor up. If you see sails, use your compass and note the direction. Keep it in the back of your mind to check that direction as you navigate your island. If they look like they are coming towards you, bail on your mission and get back to your ship. Fight or flee.

    3. If you are a solo sloop and you come across a galleon, tight turns and rocks are your friend! The galleon can not turn for c**p and their speed will catch you if you try to outrun it on open water. Stick to islands and their natural breaks.

    4. Be sure to turn off all lights. It is easy to spot day or night, and if you are trying to hide in the shadow of an island but you have your brights on, then you aren't helping your cause.

    5. Don't be afraid to use voice comms and try to talk to your would-be attackers. MANY times have I stopped shelling a person because they waved, used voice comms, or started playing music at me. I always look forward to a fun time to engage with non-pvp people, but very rarely do they seem willing to engage outside their own world or quest.

    6. Plan your route! Use your map, make notations, and have a plan of travel. Keep a weathered eye out for anyone in that course.

  • Some other tips and tricks for newer players can be found in 50+ pro tips and tricks for the sloop.

  • Trim your sails, don't drop your anchor, easier to raise the sails than anchor for a quick getaway.

  • First when you log in stock your ship with supplies you find, load the cannons & switch off those lights

  • If you are brave enough... if you wish to check out an island without stopping for a quick look. Fire yourself out of a cannon, & catch the mermaid back.
