Angry Joe Review.

  • Fantastic review! Keeping it real and 100% represents what I and many in the gaming community are feeling.

  • Have to agree with Joe.

I played all the betas, and each time I was hoping for more.
And each time I kind of came to the realisation the lack of progression was going to be an issue. For alot of people.

If you enjoy this, fine. I don't want to ruin anyone's fun. But it's seriously going to bleed players fast no matter how much you want to defend it.

It's not even a sandbox, and if you want to pretend it is, then it's the shallowest form of sandbox.
Let's be honest, simple sailing, basic combat.
You can hardly say there's a trade system. Not like eve, mine, harvest refine, manufacture, logistically moving goods.
It feels like a game for toddlers, I'm more devastated than a hater.
    My disappointment is huge.

And the final nail is the price tag, yes here's way around with season pass etc. But they fact they think a game of this depth is worth that price tag stinks.
Did Joe say him and Joe spent 800 dollars? What a joke.

I've played games from small indie teams with deeper mechanics, my implication being. What were they doing this whole time?
    Simple map
    Simple mechanics
    Simple everything.
"And the real progression us the cosmetics" In a game where you don't see your character

    I just don't get it.

There could of been story driven campaigns.
    Alliances
    More focus on trade
Hell even an island you can claim as your own and customise.

It stinks of console gaming at its purest form.

Glad I passed. For those that enjoy it. Happy sailing.

  • @racmop That's completely fine and a good mentality to have! However, you have to remember that not everyone does this, as they rely on videos or articles just like this one to help them decide if it is a game for them. The same could be said about anything really. Do you drive any sort of vehicle, or do you try any brand? Same with soap, the food you eat, the shoes you wear etc. Disposable income allows you to do anything your heart desires and some people just don't have a lot of it. So, they want someone to help to them decide and thus, you have AGJ or the mass of many other reviewers paid to help them do just that.

    We all were.

  • @boxcar-squidy

They would be an indicator of progression if all the ones you had to unlock didnt require level 36 in at least one faction. (Boots are only 28 tho)

I've been playing any chance I get since the day after launch and I am still only 20 in each rank and the grind increases with each rank. I don't even want any of the unlockable clothes. They're not that good.

There should be several outfits for every 5 or 10 levels if they wanted to show off progression. And really we should at least have a few colors for each option. The only other green jacket looks so stupid and pompous. What pirate would wear that?

  • @racmop Joe's video is from his stream, actually. He streamed the game for two days and what he didn't stream or find out, Delrith told him. It's how they work together.

  • @boxcar-squidy But even if you have the money, why spend it? Chances are the economy gets changed in the future. With more things to buy, prices will be lowered. I am sitting on 40k now and don't intend to use it. The preorder outfit is the best outfit in the game.

  • @racmop I'm not trying to convince you? No one is, I am simply telling you that he and other reviewers exist for people who cannot make up their own mind. They like to see the game dissected before they purchase it, to know if it worth the price of admission or not. As for watching a stream? I actually did that and it spurred me to try the game with the pass, to which I got about 18 hours out of it before quitting for good. Only reason I even went so long is my partners were mature and fun to be around. The galleon was a disaster, but my sloop partners were great.

They purchased the game however and even they said they regretted doing so, but were going to play regardless.

  • @kashaarafall It most likely was, however it was poorly thought out. They could instead buff the damages / increase spawn numbers etc. Thus making it exceedingly difficult without having a full crew thus not punishing people for dying to random hiccups like the server lag not registering hits leading to your death, making you rubberband off a cliff etc.

Until they get the servers running butter smooth punishing players for dying to AI and the environment was going to receive tons of backlash from the start.

  • I'm not really the biggest fan of Angry Joe, but he brings up some really good points which I've been circulating since the Alpha. I think one of the biggest oversights on Rare's part was the cosmetic based "progression" system. Whereas with most games the gameplay and rewards evolve the further you play, in Sea of Thieves your first experience will be mostly identical to your last experience. This casual friendly leveling system relies far too heavily on post-launch content instead of the players themselves actually discovering new ways to play—which's the antithesis of Rare's design philosophy.

People are going to make the argument that tangible upgrades would break the player balance, but in a game where 2/3 of the complaints focus primarily on the already unfair nature of PvP, how can you feasibly argue that point? There's a system that already exists to maintain a fair playing field in video games: skill based matchmaking.

  • That was the most obnoxious thing i've ever quickly skimmed.

  • @blackbeard-lufy What was obnoxious about it?

  • @kashaarafall Joe.

  • @blackbeard-lufy That's just his personality =P. He's always been like that, hence the name, Angry Joe. However, he was kind of sad joe in the video.

  • @x1-two well I can't tell you how to spend your money. Those are fair points and I agree that the pre-order set is one of the best, although I only wear one or two bits of it these days.

I bought what I wanted and then saved up for ship stuff personally.

Once the economy changes a lot will revolve around how they do MTs. If anyone can just buy whatever then cosmetics will no longer indicate anything, that's where items locked behind ranks, achievements and commendations will be key.

We also haven't seen the supposed cosmetics locked behind Pirate Legend yet, those might become the new mark of rank/something to grind for

  • @boxcar-squidy We should see those sometime this week, if the claim of people being 45 in all right now is true.

  • I've said so many times throughout the year that this will happen if Rare will release SoT at the current state. It was obvious in alpha that they really started to build it as a game a year ago. The first alpha had almost nothing, like 3 islands, a pistol with unlimited ammo, a ship with unlimited cannonballs, a map, bucket, shovel and the instruments. Nothing else.

This is how it went IMO:

    1. Rare focused on tech and concepts for 4 years but even that took them too long (Lazy? Bad development decisions?). Way too long, especially considering they've used a ready engine.
    2. Same was happening with Lionhead and Fable Legends (I took part in the closed alpha from the start for a long time and saw the game develop at the same speed)
    3. Someone at MS got p****d off, because the projects were costing a lot and weren't looking like they're half done.
    4. Lionhead got suddenly closed, a death threat also to Rare.
    5. Someone at MS said "You got 1 year to finish SoT or same thing happens to your studio"
    6. Rare got scared and started to build hype around the game with dev diaries etc (so there would be big uproar by the players if it got cancelled), went back to the drawing board, simplified a lot of the game to fit in the deadline (real reason behind no real character creator, no sail types that were mentioned in interviews etc) and of course, invited us, the founders to help them test it.

Both MS and Rare are guilty. MS for forcing the release, and Rare for doing the whole nothing for the first 4 years.

  • He is right about everything

  • @kashaarafall
I love his reviews he is a funny guy!! Thanks for sharing.

  • @kashaarafall or maybe not if the claims that rank grind barely progresses at all past level 45 are also true. Either way someone else will be there before me and I'll watch it all on youtube long before I get to do it myself

  • @triheadedmonkey said in Angry Joe Review.:

what is an Angry Joe and why are they angry? more importantly, why would I want to hear a review from someone who is (self-proclaimed) angry and therefore likely biased?

If they say trust your own opinion, that's at least sensible....unfortunately, some are unable to form their own opinions and just take other peoples words as the gospel.

After all, no one on the internet lies or forces there opinion on people....right?

I'm not a fan of angry Joe, but I believe him to give fair, honest and quite spot on reviews.

  • Angry Joe does miss the mark on a fair few points in my opinion. He is not a video game designer and he doesn't have as strong an understanding of the industry as he does rapport with his audience. However he, and many others, don't enjoy the game. The best experiences I have had with the game are watching streamers, because they are practised in creating fun for themselves when playing games well beyond the length of their content.
SoT wants its audience to play like a D&D party, but without a DM to craft situations that bring out those characters, the average player simply isn't experienced enough at roleplay to carry the illusion. Rare need to serve as DM for those players, but currently their quests are repetitive and soul-less.
I think that solving this requires exploration be better rewarded. Ideally those cosmetic rewards would be more numerous, but I accept that artist time is expensive. I recognise that the rewards were non-cosmetic, but I'd refer to the recent Zelda as an example of this done right. In that game, there was actually a very small range of loot that had long-term value. The vast majority of loot was either money, consumables, or low-durability weapons. People explored the map despite this, because there was the promise that every place they explored might reveal something worthwhile, and they'd always obtain something (like a crate or a message in a bottle) for their troubles. If Rare could provide players with cosmetics that had to be found through exploration, it would push them to go to the exciting environments that provide the setting to roleplay, rather than most of these exciting hidden locations just being ignored. Sure, the wikis will document where things are, but for those players who embrace the spirit of the game they can feel genuinely rewarded for playing the game 'the right way'.

  • @sergent-c****r You're quite welcome!

  • I'm confused with this game.
This review is 100% fair and true (it's not full of rage or smthing), but..... somehow i still like it (i mean game). Have played near 40 hours already. Does someone feel the same?
Maybe it's cuz i have a regular crew or..... i rly don't know. I just.... like it and that's all.
But still agreed that it can be 1000% more better.

  • He has some major points and i just got far cry 5 so until they include more stuff in Sot i will be there. As a person who paid full price i agree with angry joe. Its fun if youre with friends but not for long. Hopefully they add more meaningful content

  • Ohh damn you spoke out of my soul. THIS GAME IS STILL BETA AND NOT FINISHED YET!

The were better done release the game 6 moths later with content.
But at these day it´s normal to release a not finished game.

@RARE A content patch should add more content to the released one and not the content itself

But what now. Grinding until level 30 was good. Now i´m standing in front of a wall to make the next level grinding hundrets of chest and c**p to make the next level.
The whole world is empty. On the outpost are the same NPCs not giving you anything worth going on sea. The whole island are empty. Skeletons are stuipd af and only disturbing at chopping holes in every island.
Btw. the quest you get from the NPCsa are nothing more than dailies and no quest at all.

There are no quiz no secrets nothing on the islands. They are empty like the whole game.

The karaken: A mess and the perfect example for the fault they made. A black big point on the sea with tentacles. Wow!

Many mechanics are broken like spawning.

I think if there won´t come any big massive content patch after a month Rare can burry this game.

Btw. This game remembers me a lot to Elite Dangerous. Zero content only grinding and fantastic graphics.
Elite Dangerous lost 30% of all player in case of the leak of content in 2 months. After a year 70%.

Yep, that's nonsense, i cannot fathom how much they screwed that up. It was probably the easiest thing to do properly in this game. It's the same thing with ship customization, it's either you can have them from the start, or when you're lvl50... But no inbeetween. That's unbelievably bad game design.
Sometimes it seems like SoT is Rare's first game ever.

  • @schnibz "And the real progression us the cosmetics" In a game where you don't see your character

    There isn´t even a mirror!

  • Stopped watching after 2 minutes. Clearly didnt do any research on what rare wants this game to be, this is their game. Its all horizontal progression, the end game is pretty much cosmetics; theres never going to be skill trees or upgrades of the sort . If you spent 60$ and complain thats your fault if you think its not worth it, shouldve gotten the game pass and tested it out first. No one has even made it to end game and still judging the game sooo hard.

  • @ii-axelforce-ii He didn't have to do research...He was hyped for this game long before it's release and played it long before most did. Kind of one of the perks about being a popular/known reviewer for games. You get free games+trips to the studios.

Yeah he was genuinely excited which is why the game's a huge let down for him......he's right though, there isn't near enough content for a full priced game, there are only 4 styles of cosmetics, in a game that is heavily dependent on cosmetics l**o 😂

In a cosmetic based game I would of expected no less than 10 styles of each item at least at launch, then more added as time goes on

I'd also expect a game where the hook is buying cosmetics, it would take a little less than 3-5 days of casual play to afford a single pair of pants. God forbid we get to preview the item before we buy it.

Haha yeah, preview would be great, let me tell you this : With a preview system, i wouldn't have spent 70k on that horrendous red and blueish hull skin (the amiral one iirc). I can't stand it anymore.

Awwwwww man that's awful. Thankfully I'm only concerned about it, but haven't had any problems. Especially nothing expensive like that. Yeesh!
