Angry Joe Review.

  • Got a kick out of this and while some people might not like AGJ, he makes some interesting points, including some the players have done on this forum. I watched his playthrough on twitch and Delrith is the guy who mainly plays the majority of the game aka the grindy portions, which is who you hear talking in the background most the time.

Enjoy, or don't, up to you!

  • I agree it lacks content/variety and feels shallow at times but I’m sick of people bringing up levelling and character/boat progression. I LOVE that SoT’s doesn’t have those and there is a level playing field so I’ll always be able to play with my friends and the game is forever balanced.

What people don’t understand though that this game does have experience. The more you play, the more cohesive your crew is, the more experience you gain. It’s REAL experience. Someone playing for the first time is not gonna have a chance against me and my crew and Rare have handled in beautifully.

I’m not gonna hate on this review although these “YouTuber” reviews do nothing for me. The complaint that it’s 20% of a game seems to be one that’s echoed across major publications and this forum. I’m just not a fan of how angry joe goes about it. To each their own though.

  • @hudson-rl Can't deny that. Playing does infact make you better/more experienced at the game, but that can be said about any game. Some progression would of made a big difference and it doesn't have to be in the means of unlocking cosmetics through money or tedious tasks. It could of easily been tied to achievements or something. Sail 100 miles, special coat. Take down an enemy vessel, special this, take down the kraken, special this etc. Give people something to work for and you will get a much better response.

  • This was AngryJoe being showcased and playing the game for the first time around 9 months ago by Rare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMd6Qh0yNk4

He was genuinely excited it would seem.

  • @mad-mordechai As he said, the price is one of the main driving factors in the review, had it been lower, it would of been a more lenient scoring, but 60 dollars for what is being asked is as he said, straight piracy. The game he played on your video is the same game we got on release and that was months ago O.o.

  • Might be...but it stays 1 opinion. Watch the vids, but never forget to make your own opinion.

  • Cosmetics ARE indicators of real progression though. Your skill goes up in real life and you spend your loot on things that indicate that you've played the game enough to know what you are about.

Especially the ship cosmetics, a regular crew can each individually save up for different bits, so when you see a galleon with sails, hull and figurehead it's a fairly good indicator of skill/experience

  • @kustho I made my opinion based on my own playthrough with the pass. With friends, without, on a galleon or not, game is exactly as it states, just lacking content and certainly not worth the price of full admission. It is my opinion though and I respect everyone else's. As I've stated many times, if you like it, play it =P.

  • @kustho true it's one opinion, but he isnt the only one having this opinion. Most people have this opinion look at the metacritic score its super low. Rare really needs to show some new things and it needs to show it fast. If the first big update is just those pets and microtransactions and maybe fishing, this game is dead. It needs alot more, maybe some horizontal progression, like different kind of weapons and they atleast need to release 10 different weapons, with different strenghts and weaknesses. just more of everything now that i think about it. Some different things to do and give more of a reason to do them.

Its just an empty game, the fundament is there (and it is strong) but they need to build on it and quick. But to be honest everything i read about this game doesnt give me any hope. (no NPC ships is just stupid, no penalty for dying, bad respawns, why would you add microtransaction, they claim its only cosmetics, BUT literally everything in this game is cosmetic)

  • @kashaarafall Truer words hath never been spoken, the Rare really [mod edit] this up. They had they worst alpha testers and they applauded all the [mod edit] Rare was doing wrong(bad repawn, bad party system, no content, no meaningful progression, no NPC, no AI ahips, no traditional quests, no story, etc,). The sad part is I like this husk of a game, but with no content I feel it's days are numbered...

  • One trick pony Joe...

  • @hudson-rl but mate every game needs leveling and stuff HOW ELSE should i get better?!? /s

  • @mattydove74 The game has such a wonderful foundation and has the potential to be something amazing and to some people? It already is, but to some others? It's not. It really matters what RARE wants to do because these reviews are influencing quite a bit of potential buyers, as are the streamers and tubers. People are calling it Sea of ZZZ's for goodness sakes.

  • Would really love to see more quest variety. Some dog skeletons, underwater mermaid fighting caves, hieroglyphic puzzle lock treasure caves, lassoing a hippopotamus and dragging it aboard to sell, even a damn platforming treasure hunt, anything...

  • @kustho said in Angry Joe Review.:

Might be...but it stays 1 oppinion. Watch the vids, but never forget to make your own oppinion.

Its an opinion shared by a LOT of people, not just one.

The reviews coming reveal its more than just one opinion. I have mine, I enjoy playing atm, but I am immensely disappointed in the game. Don't feed me [mod edit], and tell me it's sugar.

If Rare pulls a Bungie and gates new content behind a paywall, people will lose their [mod edit] and rightly so.

  • Well I may not like him and i love this game but he is spot on with all of this heh,

and the big thing about there being no downside to dying I completely agree with but the community for some reason when mental when they tried to bring in some sort of death tax.

  • what is an Angry Joe and why are they angry? more importantly, why would I want to hear a review from someone who is (self-proclaimed) angry and therefore likely biased?

If they say trust your own opinion, that's at least sensible....unfortunately, some are unable to form their own opinions and just take other peoples words as the gospel.

After all, no one on the internet lies or forces there opinion on people....right?

His reviews are pretty funny, and he has good insights. Granted, I haven't watched one for a long time so quality might have dipped.

  • I don't know what the problem is. "This is by fare the most ambitious game Rare has EVER created."

  • @semi-amateurish Was that trick here that he was right on the money on a lot of the problems? Because if you watched the video, like many of us. He talks about how much he loves the idea, loves the foundation. But was so disappointed at the whole package as a cohesive title. The game in its current state can't even sustain its own loop for risk : reward to prevent it from becoming just a blank PVP/Griefers title. The incentive to actually participate in quests will, are drying up for people. At that point where you don't need treasure, and you don't carry treasure, all of the concepts that SOT tries to implement for emergent gameplay sink, and the title with it.

You can love something and be critical of it too.

  • @triheadedmonkey He's a game reviewer and at one point in time, a very trusted reviewer, however, I only watch him now because he is funny. This review though? You could honestly see the pain and hate in his eyes, motions and expressions. Much like NMS, he wanted the game to be amazing, but what was delivered? Well, it didn't live up to his expectations I guess? Another video was posted in this topic and it showed him playing the game 8 months ago and having a blast. However, the video is about 30 minutes long, which does not give enough time to do everything the game's current content allows in the sense of faction quests or raids.

If you tack PvP in there? I guess there is more? However, the pvp system is mostly pointless and seems like a fancy addon more than anything and not well thought out.

Yeah he was genuinely excited which is why the game's a huge let down for him......he's right though, there isn't near enough content for a full priced game, there are only 4 styles of cosmetics, in a game that is heavily dependent on cosmetics l**o 😂

In a cosmetic based game I would of expected no less than 10 styles of each item at least at launch, then more added as time goes on

  • @kashaarafall a dit dans Angry Joe Review. :

Not only it can be said about any game, but it is more or less true from a game to another, depending on the depth of the gameplay. For instance, it's especially true in a Moba, where the learning curve is huge, to be good, you have to learn every skill of every hero. At the contrary, the learning curve of SoT is very short, you just have to learn to work the sails, learn the cannon shot curvature, a few tricks with the cutlass and how to properly use a powderkeg, and it's done, there's really not so much to learn.
So, i don't think the "real progression is you getting good at the game" is much of an argument here.

Cosmetics are no progression. They just show how many hours you were willing to invest in the same gameplay loop. Here's what would be vertical progression: Have different types of quests after x amount of reputation. Have different enemies. Open up new exciting opportunities in the game. You can have no player leveling and still have progression. Cosmetics are a BS excuse for progression, but they are not progression.

  • @x1-two Agreed. Honestly, the cosmetics wouldn't of bothered me if they weren't so lazily designed. When I bought a new jacket+boots, my crew mate could literally not tell the difference lol.

  • @x1-two I like your suggestions and think the game needs stuff like this but hours played currently doesn't mean anything in terms of cosmetics, you still have to survive long enough to turn in your loot to actually earn anything.

Even if you only play solo, maybe even especially if you play solo. Being able to deck yourself out in fancy clothes indicates that you are good enough to be able to not only find loot but also turn it in.

@kustho true it's one opinion, but he isnt the only one having this opinion. Most people have this opinion look at the metacritic score its super low.

Some people who have rated it on a site, does not mean most people. The same as people that are complaining/voicing their concerns on the forum does not mean most people are doing it.

"...A satisfied customer will tell 2-3 people about his experience with your company. A dissatisfied consumer will share their lament with 8-10 people and some will push that number to twenty."

the people that like the game are likely actually playing it rather than writing reviews. people that don't or have had a negative experience will be quick to because that's just what humans do.

There is only one person's review or opinion you should believe, and that is your own. Positive or negative, it is likely the only truly unbiased opinion you will ever get.

  • Always love Joe's videos.

    But yeah, no upgrades.

    More content; no upgrades.

  • Never heard of this game was very funny and yet another reviews the echoes the same thing.

  • Dont particularly like this guy or his reviews but he is spot on with everything here

I like the game and can see potential - but in its current state its an empty, shallow boring experience

  • @v**a-hombre The upgrade thing I am ok with, but they need to find a way to add more to do and fast, less the sea be emptier than my gold supply =P.

  • @kashaarafall

Sure. I'm always a fan of more stuff to do.

They went mental because that death tax didn't solve anything really. It penalized you for dying to dumb stuff, like sharks or skellies, or falling off a mountain. Dying in PvP was still meaningless.

  • @smketreez I think the death tax was original designed to dissuade people from trying to solo/duo the skeleton fort.
