Upgrades/ Shields/ Immersive combat?

  • So my proposition is, Why not make it worth it? I can understand the controversy of well if people have better weapons then they will win all the time? Yes this is true, they will win a higher percentage of fights. But this opens up new fields of possibility, On a server someone has 4 crew members, PIRATE LEGENDs, Good gear, Good looks. They got it down. They made enemies, lets say they took down 5 ships. These ships meet up and plan a trap. they lead this One ship with 4 guys into a ambush. 5 vs 1 they become victorious. The battle is won! It add immersion to have different damage weapons, those who are good with shots and sword hits will be rewarded. not a one hit shot for everyone. Gold can be put to use, Better equipment not just cosmetics. with that note, more weapons/ 2 Handers| Scimitars| Daggers| Gosh why not add Fish into the mix, Get slapped by a fish for the Lol's. My point is that the progression right now is purely cosmetic, sure its neat but drives no purpose to actually loot chests. Most people just pvp and leave the chests... Thats not a pirate at all, You pillage the ship and GET THE BOOTY :). Also have interesting sword fights, If two swords swing at the same time, have them clash. Have shields to block to reduce damage. Add crouching to duck under shots or hide behind the railings from snipers. The possibilitys Are endless! With that being said. You can have different types, Wooden plank for a starter shield, Then have a more refined shield. All the way to Reinforced High Grade shields.

While we are at it why not discuss upgrading the ships cannons. If you work hard enough have like a mini cannon at the top of your look out nest that takes 2-3 hits to create a hole. Upgrade the distance of cannons, maybe things like adding gunpowder as a requirment on ships and choosing how much to use per each cannon. Maybe you want your Left cannon to hit harder but take abit more gunpowder to fire. If you run out of gunpowder. tough luck.. Also since its explosive and if gets wet is ruined, Try to keep it out of the water. Wanna sabatage a enemy ship? run on board hope not to die and shoot out their gunpowder. This is just a idea but I think it would be neat.

  • Sorry to say, but devs won't be putting in any stat upgrades or downgrades. They want everyone on an even playing field, with no one having the up errand in any one thing.

My question is why, I can understand it makes it a bit uneven depending. But Do you think all pirates were evenly matched. Most won by out witting their opponents. How easy it is to die only to respawn back until your ship is sunk is odd too.

  • @volensque

I agree, but we can make it horizontal progression.

  • @volensque because they don't want older players to wreck new players. Imagine coming into the game, all fresh and green, only to gwt one shot by a cannon from the next island. That's an extreme example of course, but that's basically why.

you literally just refuted your own argument "pirates weren't evenly matched. they won by outwitting eachother"

that's exactly what the game asks you to do. play smarter. If i outwit you, I have an inborn advantage over you. survival instinct, call it what you want.

having weapons with "+ damage" or "+ defense" doesn't make you more experienced, just makes you harder to kill with zero effort on your part.

  • "I understand that Rare doesn't want any kind of stat progression or upgrades, but why don't they do it anyway?" =D

All I'm saying is that their should be more of a rewards or upgrade system for people who spend time grinding, it can always be balanced out so even a new player could win against a experienced. "Dagger", swings faster but has slightly less damage "2h" swings hard and slower, if blocked or parried has worse recovery time" scimitar, balanced of the two. Examples like that. Also adding a shield and blocking adds more immersion then just Spamming left click until the enemy either dies or falls of the ship.

shields wouldn't fit with this type of game at all.
