It's suppose to be hard to see at night.
Why does everyone want to play easy mode? It's like cheating, why? What's the point of playing the game if it's easy?
Dang millennials always gotta try and ruin things.
It's TOO DARK at night time.
WHY IS THE RUM ALLWAYS GONE MATES AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I agree it really is way too dark.
I like it in a sense.. the need to use my lantern... the black of a cavern with things unknown around the corner....
But logistically speaking it really is simply too dark overall, I mean god forbid if someone opens the door as I play during the daytime... the glare destroys me during night time. Not an issue during game time days.

Turn off HDR on your Xbox folks.
That's not the root of the issue. Very few people I play with have or utilize HDR. It's a problem with the game/graphics/black levels itself. Quite honestly I think SoT just crushes blacks.
On an unrelated note, outside of the few contrarians who pretend to like the wilds, does anyone actually like the wilds? I play with quite a few different groups of people, and nobody likes that biome.
I wish they would just turn that stupid affects filter that produces "artificial" cloud cover off. Since its introduction in the alpha, that transition from non-wilds to wilds biome and vice versa has always looked terrible.
In some future version of SoT, perhaps we will actually see weather systems. But instead we just have a filter that makes 1/3 of the world dark, green, and brown. It's just annoying imo.

Here's an image you can use to do a quick calibration.
It's not a calibration issue. The blacks in this game are just way too low. As someone who does a lot of video work, monitor/TV calibration is important to me. My TV is properly calibrated. In order to make the blacks/contrast not as bad in SoT, it essentially means that you need to calibrate your monitor/TV incorrectly. You should not have to do that for one game.
@williamherschel I've also calibrated mine (using a Wacom Color Manager) since I do artwork on my system. My screenshots look like this..
(Midnight)
Now this of course a night with a full moon. To be honest i'm not sure if the lighting from the moon depending on the phase affects lighting during the night.

This is what it looks like for me too. Which again, may not be fully illustrative of the problem because people will view these stills with different monitor types and settings.
The problem is primarily in areas that have significant vegetation. So for instance, in that first screenshot if you went to the area to the right and took a picture (looking inland) it would be much worse. This is true of Islands that have dense vegitation, and especially true in the wilds.

Im playing on pc and night time becomes pitch black, lantern doesn't help either. I'm sure others have experienced this whats the solution?
Not been a problem for me before on PC. But now it's become really dark at times yes.

You know, you are a real jerk.
I don't think expressing a valid opinion makes someone a jerk.
He is trying to get the nighttime visuals to back the way they were before the last patch.
Is this an XBOX-only thing?
Skimming through my screenshots there's nothing significant that was changed on PC.If this is mainly an Xbox issue, it could be to do with the console's gamma settings rather than the actual game.
Xbox One "grades" the output image to pop more on a TV screen. The gamma, saturation and contrast are adjusted so black becomes darker and colour becomes more vivid.
This is really noticeable if you've ever played the same game on Xbox One and then on PS4, where it seems flatter in comparison.
One way to test this is to take a screenshot in game and view it on PC. You can view your captures on your profile on Xbox.com.

I dont find it too dark, but I do feel like the night is too long and the day isnt long enough.
It might just be my friend group but we would love to see days a bit longer and nights the same...It's about 6-7 minutes night and 17-18 minutes day...I guess that's ok
@realstyli - there’s no problem on Xbox. Seems like most the complaints are having glare issues because they don’t close the drapes or something (I sometimes sit at extreme angles to the tv if the glare gets bad). Can’t speak to PC problems, but other posts the PC people just say “you made that choice to play console” - right back at you this time! (LOL).
Anyway, on Xbox you can see just fine about all the time. No problems at sea or on the beach. The only time it is annoying is (as has been said) during a new moon while trying to find chickens and pigs in vegetation. But you know, just stop at that shipwreck and arrive at the island for dawn instead. Or push through it.
@tre-oni Its ok and not penalized if it isn't outdated info or if it is still relevant, therefor not bad necro.
I play on 2 different PCs and the one that has a Dell P2717H Nighttime is unbearable to play. On my gaming laptop it is tolerable. But the important note is that there is a big difference and changing the brightness doesn't really affect either one. I have played some games where changing the gamma allowed a tolerable experience when darkness was an issue.
Is there something else I am missing? Desktop with the monitor above has a Nvidia 1080 TI and the laptop a 1070.
