Sloop and Galleon + Matchmaking Update

  • This has been said before in a previous post I made in the comments. Tell me what you guys think of this and if it would work with good matchmaking.

    Sloop: 1, 2, and 3 players
    Galleon: 4, 5, and 6 players

    • Sloops would get matched with Sloops only
    • Galleons would get matched with Galleons only.

Why do I think the Galleon would be great for only 4+ people only?
Well, the Galleon is massive and maintaining it with 3 people can be a pain. Matchmaking for a 4th player (or all 3 if you do not have a party) will most likely get trolls. Me and 2 of my buddies do open parties and 80% of the time its a troll. I understand we can throw them in the brig, but sometimes it's too late when the ship is sailing away when we are on an island and the ship crashes and we wait for a mermaid. The galleon also has 8 cannons, 3 floors, and is obviously massive. I think the galleon could easily fit 6 people.

Some problems I could possibly see with sloops only server:
A sloop with 3 people that runs into a solo sloop may have some trouble getting away... how could this be fixed? Let me know in comments. Honestly I think if a thing like this was ever added, it could work with better matchmaking.

    What do you guys think?

    • Could a sloop hold a max of 3 people and a Galleon of 6 people work?
    • Am I just being too picky when I say the Galleon is hard to maintain with 3 people?
    • Would this work with better matchmaking?

P.S. How would you guys feel about all outposts being a no pvp zone.

  • No. Dividing players by ship is a slap in the face to the strength / weakness gameplay they were made for. There's no intent on playerbase division by any means.

Maintaining a Galleon with 3 is more difficult sure but doable. 3 on a sloop would be too much. One person can already maintain a sloop easy, and 2 people can do everything in it with ease. There really should just be an in-between ship.

I understand people want "More than 4 people on a Galleon" Because "there's so much to maintain, you cant do it all" but that's kind of the point. If you had more people on a Galleon that every role could be done simultaneously then no one would sink each other. It's a management game. You have to manage your crew and yourself and how you maintain your ship better than an opponent. Too many people would just mean there'd be no pressure. The intent is pressure.

NO NON PVP ZONES. plain and simple. The dynamic of threat and trust are what make the tensions in this game. Anyone would just run to an outpost at any sign of threat and hide.

  • Well... I agree with adding one extra player, but 6 players on Galleon is too much..

Sloops would get matched with Sloops only
Galleons would get matched with Galleons only.

Disagree, because small ship is more mobile and flexible. I destroyed many Galleon ships in party of 2 players ... its good balanced, you just need to use sails and the anchor.... I'd add one cannon on the head of the ship.. Also ships are missing rams for impact! This would be great Small ship is maybe slower but you can drive over the enemy shooting.

I see problem in respawning. C**p is there is no way to block the enemy spawning until you destroy the ship.. I think it would be great if you can overtake the enemy ship like taking the flag.

Another issue I met is that me and my friend we met some small group of 3 players diving near a wreck, meanwhile I boarded their ship and tried to steal the goods.. They almost caught me but I was able to blow up (with the gunpowder barrel) the ship and instantly kill them all (inc. me).. After maybe 15sec I was respawned nearby on my ship and I was able to take their treasury :).. This means you can play kamikadze to retake the enemy treasury. This is the reason I believe it could be reasonable to penalty kamikadze players with fee.

Another idea is the game should offer to destroy the enemy cannons and the the ship pylon, which deny the enemy ship to move !... both of these components can be repaired of course.

EDIT: When a skull appeared I was able to destroy after 3 respawns 6-7 enemy ships! So it is about skill.

How would you feel if they made a 3 player ship? Sloop and Galleon combination. Maybe have like 2 floors and 4 cannons.

And my main problem the outposts and players legit camp it. I feel like I shouldn't need to run as fast as I can and park as close as possible to a merchant just to sell. Sometimes ships even crash on purpose because they don't care if their ship is getting destroyed in an outpost, they just care about selling those chests and souls.

I understand players could hardcore combat log into an outpost, but hey, if you don't stop the ship before an outpost, then so be it. Maybe make less outposts/farther away from islands?

  • UP added som suggestions :)

What we need is bigger diversity of the ships and moooore ships :).

  • @venmann I would very much like to see a 3rd ship on the in-between for 3 players exclusively.

I've never experienced "outpost camping" and I'm almost certain it's not a thing. Not an issue at least. We've been selling stuff and browsing the shops when another ship comes right to port and brings loot out in front of us. So of course we killed them and took it, but we weren't camping. They just ignored us and paid the consequence.

Additionally yesterday we had a ship hit an outpost before us so we just sunk their ship while they hid on island, circled the area while sending one man to scout, determined they were waiting for us, and went to a different outpost. No issue. "camping" really shouldn't even be worth time considering you could wait for hours and someone could just go somewhere else. The only people that complain about it must be ignorant of their surroundings, honestly.

There are as many outposts as their needs to be. It's been tested and designed with intent. There are ever only as many ships as there are outposts. Less outposts means less ships. So even if every other ship were in theory "camping an outpost" you'd still have one open port. Less outposts = less ships.

So if someone chases you to an outpost that's tough, but kind of the game. People complain they run for hours from one ship, but no one forces them to run. PVP is an aspect of the game and you won't win every battle. You're going to lose loot but that's okay. Safe zone outposts aren't needed. Less ignorant crews that scout and prepare when selling are.

  • What we need is more ships and players on one map... I'd suggest at least 20-25 ships on the map and maybe up to 100 players :).

  • @ghost-0f-dawn I understand your point completely. As you said, PvP is in the game and if someone chases you for x amount of minutes, well then fight it out. I do take back on outposts being PvE and an easy combat log safezone.

Overall, sometimes you just gotta be aggressive. Thanks for the advice. Good use of words man, seriously. May help me in the future dealing with a Galleon chasing me to an outpost.

  • @cagej I'd love to see more ships.

    • Sloop for 1/2 players
    • Mix of sloop and galleon for 3 players
    • Galleon for 4/5 players

I think those 3 would honestly be enough.
