To Devs, please read. This *could* be the next HUGE casual MMO, the likes of which we havn't seen since WoW.

  • Dear Devs,

I'm sure a lot of the critique sounds condescending because you have feverishly worked on this game and are acutely aware of the product you've created. You know it's limitations. So let's talk about its potential.

The core of what you have here with Sea of Thieves is so well done and has so much potential, this could be the next big casual MMO. It has all the trappings of the kind of game that you just want to be immersed in.

I see this game having thousands of concurrent players with deep lore, deep interactivity, meaningful loot, a diversity of NPCs, large swaths of land that can be traversed on foot or by smaller boats through rivers and tributaries, server wide events, and big boss fights.

The point is, there are plenty of games out there that can steal away your time, but this one has that magic to become big. No one else is doing this the way you are and if this had deep content, it would command WoW-like participation.

  • @fiir agreed :) the foundation is strong! Just keep adding & evolving!!

  • Bump! Does anyone else agree? What are the devs plans? This could be a casual WoW.

  • @fiir
I agree, this game has loads and loads of potential. It's already excellent, but has the opportunity to be so much more!

  • It's not an MMO, it's a session based exploration sandbox game. You don't have 60+ people at once, I believe someone said 20 was the cap, but no definitive answer has been said as of yet.

  • WoW is the casual WoW.

This game is good, and it could be great - it all depends on their vision and direction. Rare aren't sharing those things, possibly because it's secret, possibly because they've got no idea and are in disarray after MS said that enough was enough and to just get it out the door in it's half finished state.

The game sure it casual friendly though.

  • For now I am putting my faith in Rare to deliver, when I look around in the game I am truly in awe of what they have created visually, the sea is like nothing I have ever seen in a video game in my many, many years playing them, it is truly next generation stuff.

If they can continue to add content of this quality to the game, then we are in for one hell of a ride, and I'm excited about that.

  • @kashaarafall I know, but it could be. MMORPGs like WoW are a huge undertaking and hence are a big risk to studios. If they built SoT into that, it would be less risk. What they have could point in that direction. I know a lot of people would love that, myself included of course.

  • @ersatz-nihilist WoW has a lot more depth and SoT doesn't need THAT much. Just elements pointing it in that direction, IMO. :)

  • The only thing that could ruin Sea of thieves playerbase right now is lack of events in the near future along with no new content. For a game like this, it would need new content every few months at least so people who are going for pirate legend won’t get too bored on the same grind.

  • @kashaarafall i believe the cap isn't 20, it's 6 ships. so this could be 12 if all are scuttles or 6 people if solos... though it also means it can be above 20 with multiple galleons :o ! but you wont see that.

  • @kashaarafall Wait until the servers and client message problems are resolved. I believe Rare has intentions to raise it many more than the projected 24 players per server.

And MMO means Massivly Multiplayer Online in case you don't know what an acronym is... SoT is a MMO, the only thing the OP said that isn't correct is about "meaningful loot" all loot is equal in everything but rarity and looks. Everything else is true.

And this game has tons of potential, anyone who played the scale tests knew the core gameplay was worth the 60 dollars.

edit* Some people just have a hard time adjusting to no hand holding, not getting a +1 weapon of no real progression, having the game run you through areas you will never visit again, being so rushed to reach max level you don't enjoy the content the devs have spent 2 years making, then farming the same raid 300 times so you can get all the epic purps, and say I'm bored there's nothing to do.

At least we have enjoyable base that is fun and the game can only grow in positive ways from here.

  • Go play WoW and leave SoT alone please. This is not supposed to be that.

  • @fiir You're reaching VERY far trying to compare what SoT is/could be to WoW or any fully fleshed out MMO

SoT is NOT an MMO, it's basically a water version of a Skyrim map that allows a few people to play on the same server.

SoT would have to have a HUGE expansion to even come close to what release era WoW, Everquest or any MMO for that matter was

  • @fiir I think Phil agrees with you, solid foundations and build from there...

  • @crusader-zorro Agreed.

  • @zokraitz Yup MMO means massively multiplayer online, but I mean at the scale of WoW or even other games. It's hardly considered "massively multiplayer" at this point with just a 6 ship limit.

Yup, the base is very enjoyable and building it from there is a smart move on Microsoft's/Rare's perspective. There's a lot of depth and improvements ahead, I hope!

  • @sigtric I'm not saying it should be WoW, I'm saying it should approach WoW regarding some elements of progression, lore, and depth.

What's your argument against going in that direction? Keep in mind I'm not suggesting the current game play should be changed at all (except making gun/sword fighting a little better).

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm not saying go in a new direction. I'm saying build on what's there and approach a deep but casual MMO.

  • @stadunator Again, I'm not suggesting it clone WoW. But I don't want to repeat myself multiple times. I can see the game growing in depth with the core gameplay it has now, and including a lot more people on a server with a lot more areas to explore.

  • Love the game, think it's a solid and awesome foundation. They just need to build on that foundation quickly :)

  • @fiir Sure, like I said I think they have plans to increase size. But if 1 million plus players playing on the servers isn't Massively I'm at a loss for words. Secondly, you can't play offline.

  • @katttruewalker Great news. They know what they have. At this point we need to work together to promote the game, while Rare works to add more content.

  • @zokraitz It's massive and has multiplayer, but it's definitely not massively multiplayer. Just not enough people on a given instance to justify that moniker imo.

  • @fiir

    The bones are good.

I'm eager to see what's to come.

In the immediate future, I'd like to see some specialty attire, similar to how you kit yourself out with chosen weapons.

Everyone has access to them, but you have to pick and chose which you wear (can only wear one)..... essentially claiming a role on the ship (ie. captains hat..... +10% turning movement.... carpenters belt..... 10% faster patching...... etc.)

  • @zokraitz I see what you mean, but part of the definition of MMO is what I have in bold below:

    MMO
    noun
an online video game which can be played by a very large number of people simultaneously.
    "a well-made fantasy MMO"

The game has a lot of players but they aren't in the same area simultaneously. Compare to WoW where 10,000 people can be on one server. That wouldn't work with the design of SoT of course. I'm just hoping it can be a bigger world with at least few hundred people on a server.

  • @zokraitz they did say that they have no intention for it to ever be 100 players per server or anything like that, it's just kept small with constant migration to keep the encounter rate where they want it, which is supposed to be every 15 to 20 minutes, tho I don't think that's working correctly as I have gone hours and not seen another ship, and Im always looking for other ships

  • I honestly feel this game is gonna be epic as more time passes by. I can't stop playing to be honest lol especially when you have your own crew. I met randoms on this game through matchmaker and we haven't stopped playing with each other it's fun, and it's addicting. It surely will be the next big thing!

They plan on putting out cosmetic updates every few weeks with timed events. They said they can and will change the map (remove islands put in new ones and change them). This is why they don't have to get Microsofts approval before releasing an update. They can release it whenever they want. Every three months they are going to be doing bigger updates. This was there plan from the beginning. instead of here's everything we will come back with DLC in 6 months they are splitting it up so its going to be changing all the time. As for your idea with the roles on the ship. They are never going to do stat based items. Nothing will ever give you some kind of boost to anything.

Also a reason why its on gamepass. Either pay 60 bucks now and get all of it or pay 10 a month and use it as a service.

  • I've been thinking this since my first Alpha test.

Alot of what Sea of Thieves is having problems with reminds me exactly of what Blizzard went through when launching WoW.
Having participated in the launch of both games, I can safely say Sea of Thieves is the only game to have come close to achieving what WoW did. Most games that attempt it fail before their launch. While Rare may not have a subscription for Sea of Thieves, they do have Xbox Live's funding if the game goes well.

  • @ultimate-powa gamepass is monthly service you can pay to play SoT

  • @spr1nk Interesting, I wasn't aware of this. I see why they are doing it. Putting in a bunch of work and getting ganked sucks. I don't mind, because I cut my teeth on Rust. But most people aren't into that. Having a huge number of random people in a server would p**s a lot of people off.

HOWEVER. I remedy to this is to have factions, neutral, and contested zones. Then you know what you're in for if you go there. I'd rather have it this way, but that's just me.

GamePass isn't just for Sea of Thieves, though that would also increase funding towards the game from Microsoft.

The GamePass does by all means give Sea of Thieves a much better chance of receiving future updates, patches and expansions.

  • @fiir yeah, Joe neate(the executive producer) clarified that on his Twitter back around the closed beta as people were constantly saying it would be 100 players a server at launch and that won't be the case

  • @ultimate-powa That was their plan from the beginning. To Update and change this game every two and three weeks. Then release a big update every three months and run its timed events. There's a reason Microsoft gave them the right to push out updates without having to get them approved before they release them. They plan on adding things all the time. Much of which is already programmed just waiting to get released in these updates. They want it to be ever changing. Take out island, put new ones in, change the landscape. This was one of the big things they talked about. Microtransactions are going to help support it too.

The entire premise of the game is centered around the players making the experience their own. 'Quests' were designed in such a way to be very light and not very involved on purpose. To give a little pointer in direction. You set sail and you and the other players in the world make the adventure.

Meaningful Loot? What makes it meaningful? Character stat enhancements? No thanks. A game like this is perfectly fine with everyone being on even footing regarding character power. Leave it to player skill.

Deep interactivity? Again, this is designed purposefully as a sandbox game where the player makes the adventure.

Sure, more NPCs would be nice for ambiance but that's all that is.

Lore will evolve over time, and the players themselves will add to the histories and legends in the years to come.

WoW simultaneously brought MMOs to the mainstream (good thing) and ruined it for most people who loved the genre prior to what it was before it came out.

On the other side, you have several games out there that do really well with very little handholding or developer driven narrative that are small server or session based games (like this one), and the players make them great using their own imagination and creativity. That's where Sea of Thieves fits in, and should stay.

This is not to say we shouldn't see quality of life improvements, map expansions, other factions to trade loot to, more cosmetics to earn, etc.
