True Captain: I know my sailing terms and damn fine gunnery, mizzenmast, mainsail, keelhaul, larboard, abaft, avast, and ahoy you better speak my language
@robroythered Aye! I prefer to use the proper nautical terms, but the reality is not everyone knows if there is any red port left ☹ I try and teach the basics to new crew mates but will make exceptions if they just be starting out.
@udeadcarrot12 Okay, start reading Patrick O'Brian novels (he's the guy who wrote Master and Commander, which is only one of the novels, there are 21 total) then get "A Sea of Words: A Lexicon and Companion for Patrick O'Brian's Seafaring Tales."
I guess Scallywag is my best answer, but not quite the one I would have supplied. I do know starboard from port (ex-Navy), but I don't use nautical terms in the game. I find that all a bit too nerdy/mom's basement dweller stuff. However, each to his own. :-)
SCALLYYWAAAAAAG, If I'm with mates who understand, or don't, I usually tailor my language to them! I find that in a game so heavily founded around teamwork, it's impossible to be able to use language that only a minute amount of devoted pirates would understand, I try to be as... Piratey... as I can but sometimes the communication just isn't there. :P
@myrm I've just been reading these Patrick O'Brian novels so my head is full of useless nautical terms; it's fun to bust them out on occasion in the game and catch people by surprise or see if they have any idea what i'm talking about.

I have read a number of Alexander Kent's "Bolitho" books. Enjoyable reads. :-)

I try to use nautical terms, but... usually find that most players playing this game has no real love for the theme so they don't know port from starboard.
I still have problems with deck names and such, but i know foremast, main mast and mizzenmast, port, starboard, bow and stern... The basics of what is needed to sail the ship in the game anyways. :)
Someone in another thread accused me of getting a "stiff hull" over something. A very salty euphemism I feel we should all adopt.
