The current ship cosmetics are seriously ugly and uber overpriced.

  • Okay, so I get that Rare may want to extend the time it takes to acquire such items but 70,000 gold? 140,000? You've got to be kidding me! They're not even nice looking ones; for example, the simple black hull that was in the Beta.

If that doesn't make sense to you, let me write down the basics from the viewpoint of a casual-competitive player. Today me and two friends (in a Sloop) did at least 50-60 voyages from both the Order of Souls and Gold Hoarders which earned us around 7.8k with money only being spent on purchasing new quests.

That sounds pretty good right? Wrong. Despite handing in multiple Captains Chests (and even some stronghold chests) almost ALL of them simply gave us no gold OR XP towards our desired faction! In fact, one of the Stronghold Chests took away 1 Gold Hoarder rank from me!

Oh, don't worry, it only took us around 8 damn hours. So, if 8 hours of constant work nets me 7.8k then that means per hour I'll supposedly earn around 975 coins. This means that to purchase one of those ugly ship hulls (opinion) at 70k credits it should take me a grand total of...

    72 hours.

Thats 3 DAYS, boys and girls. Three WHOLE days of non-stop grinding to get ONE ugly-a*s skin (opinion) for your otherwise bland ship. Please for the love of all that is holy, reduce the prices of all cosmetic items to make them simply affordable. You said you wanted horizontal progression, so let us have some!

Personally, I'd make hulls cost 15k (if you want to stick with multiples of 5), figureheads cost 10k, and sails cost 10k, too. This makes customising your whole ship a more feasible task for everyone out there who has a life to live.

Rant over. Have a good one.

i agree with the price.. the uglyness not so. i wouldn't buy one of those items because they feel kinda useless. i rather wait for my legendary status and hope by the gods new stuff will show up. that actual shows my status off.

  • @rvengekarma IMO it's the only thing I look forward to buying in SOT. I like a pretty ship, what can I say?

i agree but i feel like we unlock more through progress, IMO the only outfit i like is the pre order bonus one.. i also feel like some of the biggest isle are to empty.. but w/e i dont wanne complain to much about it yet till i fully played/finished the game.

  • @rvengekarma
The reason why the pre-order outfit looks so good is because of it's simple colour scheme and design, just like a certain colour of ship that has been left out of the full release...

  • Cosmetics are the end game content. They're going to be exorbitantantly overpriced unless there was something else to do with your time in the game.

  • grog sails❤❤❤ #groglife

As I said in my post, I understand horizontal progression, just make it affordable and varied. Not cheap. Affordable.

It won't happen man. Content is very bare bones. This is still the same game that we had as a beta a week or two ago. So in order to artificially create content, the prices have to go up. Is it fair? No. Does it suck? You bet.

  • Whatever happened to those banjo kazooie cosmetics? It looked great but that didn’t even make it in for launch. Smh :(

  • You can literally get 10k out of skeleton forts if you manage to do it with your crew and get all the loot, and it takes about 30 minutes (did it in a 2-man sloop). So it is not that long to hit the 70k gold mark. And it is nice to have some grind in-game to get things, but I do agree that we need better looking ship cosmetics.

  • @timeekk Said in my post we got multiple Stronghold Chests which ended up paying nothing both in XP and Gold.

  • @xsarcasticbritx have you tried closing the game and logging back in? I took 2 forts down with my crew and both times we didn't get the gold and rep right away, but when I closed the game and joined the seas again, there it was.

  • @xsarcasticbritx How on earth have you only made 7.8k gold doing 50 or 60 voyages.......

i have done 20 voyages and have around 13k worth of gold....
i also loot sunken shipwrecks which tend to pay out a fair bit too.

but 40 or 50 voyages and having under 10k, i think your are doing something wrong buddy.

  • The payout should definitely be more. However due to the server issues some of the money and experience payout isnt working properly. You should for sure have more than 8k for your troubles, the servers are just catching up!

  • They look ok. Not too over the top.
The price is far too expensive I will agree. They need to be easily HALF their current price.

I agree that there should be more/better cosmetics... but I'm gonna question your claim of 50-60 voyages for only 7.8k gold.

That's just ridiculous. The only way I can imagine you doing that is if you've not upgraded your voyages? If you're doing the base intro ones maaaaybe that would make sense.

But, say, I just did a OoS voyage and got around 900+ for it. 50 of those and I'd have 45,000g.

  • I don't think the ship cosmetics are ugly but do agree that 70,000 coins for a sail is a bit over the top.

  • @lewanderous the vast majority, as I said, didn't pay me at all. Even after multiple restarts + waiting in game I still hadn't been paid.

  • @bloodfrenzy187 For sure, 70k for anything like that is overpriced AF. 140k is taking the mickey.

  • @xsarcasticbritx 70.000 is affordable, you only needed 3 days to get one of those, how many days do you need to level up to max in Vanilla Wow? Of non stop grinding? And how much time to max out your equipment?

    3 days is ridiculously low.

  • @rvengekarma 7,8k gold in 8 hours? XD Today I made with my friend about 14-15k in one hour so... sad story bro

  • Not sure what you were doing but in a little over 10hrs I had nearly 70k. How you only earnt 7.5k in 8hrs across 50/60 voyages does not add up...did you upgrade them? Or were you churning out 20 gold quests constantly.

There was/is a bug where gold etc want updating instantly and I fixed that by logging in and out and annoyingly got caught out the final time during lavenderbeard but my fault, should have checked twitter. Anyway rare have already issued an awareness of it and have people working on that bug right now

And just for proof to prove im not talking rubbish, one ship with a new hull and figurehead.

  • @xsarcasticbritx sure. but you calculated wrong. you're saying three days of grind time based on the way the game is rewarding you with gold that is clearly not functioning as intended.

  • The servers will settle down in a week or so, and we'll all receive the gold we've collected then. I'm not worried about it, as I've seen hundreds of multiplayer releases, and they have ALL been messed up to a greater or lesser extent. It'll be fine.

I think the customizations look pretty good. I'm very surprised how few areas of our ship we can customize, though. Three things only? What about flags, cannon, decks, interiors, lanterns and so on? What about making our ship looks unique, not just repainted black(ish)? This is a little disappointing.

  • It's very surprising that you aren't given a randomly customized ship to start with. I don't mind getting killed by a galleon but when the customization options are so expensive which one of the identical, bland looking ones were the one who killed me?

The fun of the beta was that I could track them down, maybe get my treasure back! Now it's just a sea of the same looking ship. This will change in future when people have grinded out new kits but it was fun before!

Agree with above. We did about 8-10 voyages and had just under 10k each. Looted a few shipwrecks -- well worth your time. There is NO way you did 50 voyages and had under 10k gold.

  • The ship customization should be cheaper, and they shouldn’t be just reskins. The game is the beta, and after I heard everyone screaming at me “it’s just the beta, the game will have ‘this’ and ‘that’ and ‘there’ in it, be patient!!!111!!”. Overhype severely hurt this game I think. They took so much stuff out as well, and the ship cosmetics? You can’t even share gold between crewmates so you can all pool in and get the sail for the CREW’s ship. It’s a shame.

  • I feel like this game is highly based on the elite dangerous model if any of you have ever played it.

Basically it's a constant grind for cash. (Except in elite you can buy different ships and equipment that increase performance)

  • @Rdizz

Except in Elite there’s an obvious goal; to be better than the other people, with larger ships and stronger weaponry. That isn’t in this game. There should be a lot more sidegrades IMO, or at least make this with one hell of a lot more cosmetics.

You should be able to create a "crew" similar to guilds, clans ect.... in where there is an option of percentage of voyage profit goes to the crew bank and from here you should be able to buy ship cosmetics.

I also feel like you should be able to name your ship and buy a nameplate but this should be VERY cheap and your first "upgrade".

  • @Rdizz

Agreed. They stated that ship names would be in at launch (I think), and it would be a voting system. I’m imagining another IPG, but hopefully better.

  • Maybe we all need to realize that FULLY finished and released games are a thing of the past. And that all games are now released as "early access" regardless of how they market the game. Obviously there are pros to this as in constant development but then again many cons as well. I for one am not looking forward months or even years just to name my ship and most likely will be long gone by then. And I'm sure another 30$ season pass on an already fully priced game. Sometimes it just becomes too much.

Ya I remember reading this too. Either we haven't found out how to yet, or item just not there.

I think the game in a whole is a scavenger hunt. If you read some of the dialog some of the vendors hint at stuff that they left around the island things like that. Almost as if you can find and loot.

Oh and to comment on the OP I agree. 150k is just ludacris..... I mean absolutely absurd and an obvious attempt at extending the already shallow content as is. Shallow as in items available. Now it does appear that stock will rotate and change and may be different per port so this is all hearsay. But at this point we can only work with what information is directly infront of us atm

  • @Rdizz

I honestly hope that is the case, a scavenger hunt of sorts would add a lot more content that is sorely needed.
