Why is everything so expensive all of a sudden

Because in the beta, it was so we could try stuff out, and earning everything was fairly easy. They wanted there to be some sort of goal.

Yeah but the most amount of gold you can get from 1 chest is like 2000, and with the stupid amount of outpost campers you could spend 50 minutes ferrying a haul just to be camped

It has the opposite effect for me. When I saw how expensive basic cosmetics we're I lost interest in the game. Grinding for 1 sail or fancier pants doesn't interest me at all. I played the game for about a month when it was released got frustrated at how many fetch quests I'd have to do to get just 1 piece of a cosmetic for my Pirate or ship and stopped playing. Waited for hungering deep, got really excited about the game again for about an hour until I found that not only was I required to play with others in order to experience the content, a glitch from the update disallowed me from repairing holes in my ship. Stopped playing for about a month. Went in today to see if there were any changes. Everything is still expensive. I spent the money on the game and that's the only real money I'll spend on it because I don't do micro transactions anymore ever, had enough of those. It will remain in my library and I really would like to play this game more but the reward isn't worth the amount of sailing required to buy things. I'll never support micro transactions but I'm probably the minority. I don't spend real money on items in a game and I won't spend weeks sailing and questing to buy 1 set of sails or a fancier looking sword that does exactly the same amount of damage as the starter sword. If the reason the cost is so high is really to try to keep players playing that turns me off to this game even more when initially I was so excited for it. Basic gear should cost hundreds not thousands. My solution is to create a lot more variations of the cosmetics so that players can build a collection of cosmetics. I'd keep on sailing for that. Having many, many choices purchased so I could change my pirates wardrobe and ship when I want instead of being stuck with 1 outfit and nothing for my ship after several weeks of sailing. This phenomenon of forcing players to play together is not something I'm interested in at all. Mostly because random strangers are jerks who won't work together. I want to sail alone and I think there are many players who could agree with that.
