Liar's dice and gambling would be an amazing addition.

  • I know I'm not the first guy to think about it, but it crossed my mind while I was watching some footage I've recorded and saw my friend and myself kinda get stranded on an Island, as I (voluntarily) forgot to lower the anchor before going ashore.

Now I literally have no idea how hard or how easy it would be to implement, but I think the game could be like 10 times better (for me at least), if you could just play Liar's Dice literally anywhere, on your ship, on an island, of course in the taverns and gamble your hard earned gold.

Other games would be cool too, but I really feel liar's dice would be the number 1 game to consider. The setting is perfect for it (not that I would know, I only saw it once in Pirates of The Carribean), and it was one of my favorite thing to do in Red Dead Redemption (though I missed out on playing it online).

(And yes, I know all about the mermaid and back to ship mechanic, I just thought it would be really nice to have something really fun to do when you don't feel like doing quests, fighting, sailing, and stuff like that. Some nice thing when you want to take a break without going AFK or quitting the game)

  • @maamar Thay plan to give us dice. What we do with them and where we do it is going to be up to us.

  • Their behind the scenes had a rather large pair of dice in it. I giggled.

Yeah, but that really doesn't mean we can play Liar's Dice with them, let alone gamble our in-game currency.

What good is a die if you already got one, for instance, and you can only roll it but not hide its result.

Also, if they do plan on having it, it's a bit of a weird choice to wait after release, since it would be a very strong selling point, especially seeing how so many people have been complaining about how there's little to do.

  • i remember playing Liars dice while playing Pirates of the Caribbean on my PS2. was never good at it, but was fun. i was better at poker. always able to get a good hand back then... i also played POTCO on my old XP in 2000s years. good times

I hate poker myself (i hate how long it takes to get a good hand), but it should definetly also be in the game.

  • I think dice as a simple item you can have would be awesome and fit as many uses as you could think of. Deciding issues, playing c***s, RP stuff, and perhaps even coming up with your own games. There could be dice cups as part of the games many equipment sets, and It's just one of those items that just add so many possibilities to how you want to play the game and what you want to make of it. The more open ended it is the better it is for this kind of game.

  • You don't have to have a game mechanic make it work for you. IRL, if you have a pair of dice and you want to play a dice game then you don't need it encoded into the fabric of reality to facilitate it. Stay far enough away from one another on a beach, in a tavern, on the boat, etc. so that you cannot see each other's dice unless someone calls you on a potential lie. As far as betting, don't use gold then. Play with bananas, planks, and cannon balls. Bananas = 1, planks = 5, cannonballs =10. It is no different than playing with clay chips. Or simply make up a new dice game that you CAN play with the tools you are given.

Yeah, it would be pretty neat to have something like that, but this would probably also mean forget about the gambling aspect.

Even if they do implement a way to give people money, after enough people refuse to pay up when they lose (because you'd better believe a lot of people are going to refuse to pay and use the "yarr that's the pirate's way"/"it's called sea of THIEVES" excuse to justify their behavior), it might just end up like DayZ.

What I mean is, in the beginning of the DayZ mod, you could often meet friendly people, or hostile people, never know which was which, and sometimes they got really creative/GreyArea with it, robbing you blind at gunpoint but leaving you alive, force you to play their stupid/twisted games, there was mind games and stuff, it was really fun.

But that period ended pretty fast, once the mod got popular and more and more people started just killing on sight, and this tendency kinda snowballed, people got tired of getting shot on sight, so they started shooting on sight themselves.

In the end, there was nothing more left in the game than just shooting on sight.

    I love Texas Hold'em. :3

Played it with friends in a trawler. Survived to the last showdown with Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10. I won.

Moment I shared the cards in my hand for the audience still feels deep in my chest every time I recall it.

  • @mythicalfable

I honestly forgot there even was any other kind of Poker.

EDIT: But now that you guys mentionned Poker, I really miss PKR.
At least in this game you could goof around with the emotes and weird clothing and stuff.
I have a friend who had like a bald Freddy Mercury character dressed as superman, he kept spamming the "chicken" emote, it was so freaking hilarious.

I don't know what happened to it anywhere else, but I know they shut it down in France.
You should check it out while waiting for SoT if it hadn't shut down in your country.

  • I think about the players who created games like s***t shooting in GTA. One player would drive over a jump in a vehicle while another player had a rocket launcher. Or SoT players playing Whack-A-Mole with explosive barrels on the beach. Use the tools they are giving you to make it work. You don't need a game coded into SoT to play it. They are providing the rocks, the sticks, and the awesome backyard to play in. We provide the creativity to go from there.

  • I agree to me there’s no point of just “Dice” if there isn’t a gambling mechanic behind it. Also may not be possible without rules

Yeah, I get your point and you're right, but I really think it would last longer with a built-in gambling mechanic.

I don't think people would be playing Liar's Dice for very long without some kind of risk/reward attached to it. And I don't think just "walking the plank" or other goofs like that would do the trick, they'd be fun like the first 2-3 times, but that's it.

  • @maamar There is no risk/reward anyways. There is no real gold to bet. All of this is proxy. I'm not being flippant about that. At any given moment we either buy into the fantasy or we don't. Look at the arguments people have playing with fake money during board game. The only risk/reward in that situation is during that frame of reality. The in-game SoT gold is fantasy as well. Now it does represent some work so there is some value attached to it, but I do not believe that it really needed if people want to play a game. Ever play a poker game IRL that didn't have a monetary buy in? I have. The chips feel exactly the same.

Well I for one would get quickly bored of it and stop bother really fast if it's just playing dice and no earnings or loss, that's for sure.

Ever play a poker game IRL that didn't have a monetary buy in? I have.

I have too, and I got bored very quickly, and so did everyone who was playing. Nobody even cared the slightest, since the chips were just handed to them and they had nothing to do for it, there wasn't any kind of investment on their part getting the chips, so there wasn't any investment on their part gambling them.

All in all, I think we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

I'm okay with that. You are a reasonable person, you make a rational argument, and we just have a different perspective. Cheers!

  • Not a fan of gambling...except paying hard earned cash on a promise of a good game but thats besides the point. Would adding gambling alter the rating of the game or maybe limit where it could be sold?

I may be wrong but I think the US is the only place where Simulated Gambling is a factor.
It would put the game on a "T" (teen) rating, but the game's probably already at least rated "T" for all the getting drunk on grog.

    Fair enough cheers

  • We would need trading or a betting system if we had dice that would actually be used to gamble or play games.

Sea of thieves is already Rated Teen in the United states. says it has Use of alcohol, violence and crude humor in the reason for T rated.
