ABlueObject Presents a GUIDE TO BOARDING!
Cuttlass keys: Be on an elevated position with no geometry above where your character is standing. Have water below you.
Predict the ship's trajectory and lunge in front of where the ship will be, if you go below the ship it will push you under rapidly strafe right or left to go for the ladder.
Cannons should be used as a desperate attempt board or just after you empty your cannon inventory into the side of their hull.
AIM LOW
because you keep your momentum when you hit the water you will most likely overshoot your first attempts. This also means if your ship is moving you will also keep that horizontal velocity. If you are moving left to right on your target then you will land further right then where you aimed.
Once on the ship, by all means, kill the enemy. But don't forget that the primary objective is to sink that ship. Therefore the first thing you should do after boarding is drop the anchor so yer mates can broadside em. Then, if available one shot a stationary gunner with the blunderbuss and sprint below decks stealing ammo and resources. Camp the holes and take out anyone who patches.
Another great boarding/ KEG STRAT:
have a relentless tail? Jump off the bow with a keg or commando to board. This works very well if the enemy ship is close to medium range as they wont see you jumping off the stern. Be sure not to keg your own ship by actually jumping to force you below your hull.
