Game crashes after about 30 minutes (PC)

  • So I've been playing around with the beta for about a day, but the game consistently crashes after roughly 30 minutes of play.

I can get a quest, travel to my destination and dig up the chest, then I need to rush back and turn in the chest (is that the only thing I can do with it btw?) and get some gold.
A few minutes later the game crashes.
Quests where I'm looking for one or more chests are impossible to complete, since It'll always crash when I'm at the second island.

At first I thought the game was hogging too much RAM or even Disk space, but after making sure I've got over 100 GB free on the disk and keeping the task manager up to check on RAM usage, I can tell you that it is not one of those.
20% CPU is in use while playing, 30% RAM.
I haven't checked the GDDR usage, but I've got 4 GB and it seems like that should be plenty.
Texture quality is set to "Rare".
Tried setting every setting to "Cursed" (lowest) but it still crashes.

Is this a known issue, or does anyone know what's causing it?

  • @hezkore Do you have an amd card?

  • Do you happen to have an AMD video card by chance? A lot of people have reported issues very similar to yours and Rare is working on a fix for it.

  • @hezkore I'm also having this issue. There's no error coming up, the app just freezes for a moment and then closes. I tried turning down settings, but that doesn't seem to work. I have an Nvidia GPU, so I don't know what's going on.

  • @entspeak It seems that there are problems with the Nvidia cards, I just found other players to whom the game freezes or crashes.

Before, those problems were common in AMD and caused by their drivers, have you updated your drivers recently?

  • My game crashes after about 2-3 hours. My friends card didn't crash at all last beta, but now crashes after 10-30minutes. We both have AMD, 280x and 290x. Really hope it can be fixed, or a better fix would be allowing players to rejoin the crew after a crash so we don't lose all our progress on our voyage!

  • @aetherbones Have you updated your drivers to version 18.3.1? I have not had problems after updating to that version.

I'm using a nVidia in this computer.
The only way I've been able to play the game is using my laptop which has an ATI card.
ATI released new drivers with one of the fixes being "Sea of Thieves™ may experience an intermittent application hang or crash during gameplay."
I guess nVidia is just slow to the part (as always sigh)

  • Got this from another thread about crashed, Rare ses to put your lighting graphics setting down to common or cursed.

It doesn't matter if it's all on the very lowest settings.
    The crash still happens.

If you're on an ATI card, I recommend updating your drivers as most issues seems to have been fixed on ATI already.

  • @el-espectro-0 I updated my driver before I started playing.

  • Please tell us what your PC Specs are and most importantly what your GPU is.

Before the new build, I ran on the 17.10.2 Drivers for my AMD Rx 480 but since the Final Beta dropped in, I had to update to 18.3.1 since I crashed a lot and I've only suffered one Driver failure since then.

  • @entspeak I am not sure it is the drivers' fault since another user has tried different versions and still has the issue.

@coroyy The problem of freezes and crashes was common in amd cards and caused by their drivers and not by the game.
Have you updated the Nvidia drivers recently?

"Tried different graphic drivers and settings."
    Soooo, yes.

In AMD, the issue was located in the shader cache.

You could try to try the version you had before the current version in case it works for you or try to disable the shader cache in case the AMD problem had moved to Nvidia.

If you can not fix it, contact with the Support, and if you manage to fix it, then when you have time, contact the Support to inform it, probably that will help them locate the issue.

Raise a ticket (it may take a while to fully load)

I hope you solve it before the beta finishes and you can enjoy the game :)

  • Re-downloading it on my SSD instead of HDD may have fixed it. I had two ~30 minutes sessions now without any problems.

  • @coroyy I am glad you have managed to solve it!

When you have time, could you inform it to the Support as a bug? That could help them locate the issue and solve it.

Report a bug (may take a while to fully load)

And thanks for post a solution!

  • @coroyy how do you select the location to where to install it?

  • @itzthrillz177 It actually asks you when you want to download it
