The key can glitch out and will disappear if you say put the key on bottom floor and take on water... Key used on diff fort yields no reward...
Best thing you can do is make sure you kill any in pursuit of you if you run with key and use asap...

@wriesteight55 uh dont worry,i can confirm you can take it like 3 hours, and 1 times happen we lost it in the ocean and find it later after 1 hour.
I just solo'd keel haul fort the second before I killed captain I hear tower cannon fire I picked up key ran to sloop then dropped sails and headed off...I could hear I was taking on water from the other sloops cannons made a turn repaired but kept taking fire... Knew I was screwed... So I took key and dove deep, right after checking compass so I could find again...
I was deep enough with key I had to let go and eat bananas which was fine... The key was right in front of me... but when I went to grab the key again hitting the x the meter would only turn an 1/8th of the way.... key glitches out... so I surface swim away as the other sloop is circling my mermaid its nighttime and I try my best to lure them away... they follow new mermaid path... I take mermaid back to ship start heading back to keel haul... I get there check door it's still locked I search for key for an hour it's no where to be found...
The key key has issues....
Make a purchase pack that will allow you to safe guard fort keys keep them on you even if die without having to hold onto them in hand...
Make people pay for every three uses or something....
