The Stamina Bar

  • Hello my fellow pirates!

I had an idea that I really hope that Rare considers on implementing. Over the past few months I have been reading about people complaining about many parts of the combat mechanics of this game. A few examples of these complaints are the bunny hopping, the sword lunge delay and consequence if missed, and also the sword stun lock that will not allow you to change weapons or reload. After reading many posts and experiencing many of these issues for myself, I have come up with a solution that I feel would really help the PvP mechanics of this game and also would make PvP more strategic, fair, and fun.

I really suggest that Rare implements a Stamina Bar. Some of the mechanics will work as such:

Stamina Bar = 100 points and refreshes over a small amount of time. Maybe 10 points per second when player is not using stamina actions.

Jumping = 10 points (would regulate bunny hopping to 10 per full bar)
Sword lunge = 50 points with no delay if missed
Sword blocking = no damage taken by swords (we arn't jedis here:), but costs 10 points per block. 0 stamina = no blocking
Running = 5 points per second. That would allow 20 seconds of running before getting tired.
I also think they should implement running with treasure but it costs you 20 points per second. So it would allow a 5 second sprint if you are being chased but will cost you all of you stamina which will leave you defenseless for a small time while your stamina recharges.

Again, this is my opinion. I love this game and only want it to succeed! I have been playing for over a year and the PvP battles usually end very quickly especially from being sword stun locked. I literally just throw my hands up because I know that nothing I do can save me in that instance from going to the ghost ship. The bunny hopping also is a huge advantage to the PC players as well. I know because when I bunny hop, Xbox users can hardly keep up with me with their aiming. I have taken out 4 man crews easily just by sprinting throughout the ship with a blunderbuss jumping all over the place while doing a 360 move and shooting them in the head. I then run below deck to reload and rinse and repeat. A stamina bar would definitely limit me from taking out 4 people over and over again. Please let me know your thoughts! Cheers!

  • Your post is well thought out, but I'm not a fan of the idea. One of the things I like about the game is how little HUD information there is. Right now the only status bar is the health bar, and that only appears if you're low.

Technically, stamina is already a thing. As evidenced by the post-sword lunge movement, and the reduced movement speed that happens after taking fall damage. Obviously, it's not as significant as some of the measures that you're suggesting, but my preference is to leave it alone.

Some of the bunny hoping differences between PC/Xbox will hopefully be mitigated by allowing Xbox users to select different controller layouts. Right now, the bumper jumper controller setting, a staple of Xbox FPS titles is not a thing.

  • @williamherschel I had a feeling someone would mention the minimal HUD. I think OP's idea could still work without adding in an actual bar. So all the values are still present but not visible, like holding your breath underwater.

The numbers might need to be tweaked by Rare, but I think the idea has merit.

  • @stephenfarren blocking/slashing should definitely cost stamina. Being able to block/slash forever kills the whole melee aspect of this game.

  • These are some great points and i hope to see them implemented into the game!
    Thanks!

  • @stephenfarren

    Yeah, but why??
    Just because people are complaining?
Don't agree.. I think the game is well as it is..
Why not to bunny hop when you can be killed by one shot of the 'bloodburner'(?), 'billyplunder'(?)... One shot of the shotgun even at midrange.. and need 2/3 shots from sniper,. and sword swings stag you when hit.. player will get used to it as we did.

    People will always complain.. so..
    I wouldn't change a thing.. 😊

  • @nunoazuldimeter You asked why, but I gave many examples in the original post. The PvP mechanics are based on spamming actions. Have you not been sword stun locked? Have you not bunny hopped in every direction while people miss you over and over? I think that the system in place is very shallow and the use of skill is minimal.

  • @williamherschel Are you stating that you would rather have a shallow PvP mechanic rather than a small yellow bar in a corner of your screen? If so, cool story:)

no, i like my bunny hops.

  • @nunoazuldimeter you remind me of the people who wanted to keep the dolphin dive in bf2.

  • @stephenfarren the bunny hopping pc thing is definitely an issue @Capta1n-Cr0ss has chased me down on an island, and while his mental skill is what allows him to succeed for the most part, I had never felt like attempting to dodge or block or run was as futile as the day he killed me and perfect code on an island, his aim was always just one step ahead with the bunny hopping involved. Surely this is tactical skill aswell but the control scheme plays a huge role. @WilliamHerschel bumper jumper would alleviate that feeling of futility to some degree I would think lol.

Idk how I feel about the stamina mechanic, one big thing I like about this game is even when outnumbered it’s more about tact and diligence in planning than anything else, having a “stopping point” where you are basically a sitting duck seems like a bad way to reward players who put the effort in to be that consistent, which now rewards the player indefinitely, up to the point where the other players effort meets your own. Beyond Mouse and controller balancing this aspect should be kept. Skill would have a much lower plateau if they added this. Which may or may not be a bad thing. I won’t argue that it’s not well thought out like hershel said, it clearly is. Im just not sure on how it would affect solo players or solo boarders for example. It’s just as easy to kill them as anyone else but it’s their skill that allows them to wipe a ship. Idk if that freedom of skill should have a cut off where you become handicapped like the stamina would do, but I’m sure others would love this change becuase it limits a solo players power. Who’s to say.

  • @stephenfarren
Yeah. But I like to bunny hop and run careless about stamina ahah .
I'm not much a fighter so my concern is about the running and swimming aspects.. running through islands at max speed because I have no time to waste when I see a galleon sailing in my direction, swim fast because I'm out of breath.. I wouldn't like to think about stamina in that occasions.. and carrying treasures is already a pain, why would we want to think about stamina too..
And maybe that's way they didn't put it in game..

My kind of skill in this game pass through tactics, planning actions, sailing, that sort of thing.. not much fighting.. but hey, this is me.. 😁

  • @a-cranky-eskimo One thought that could fix the solo player from having a "stopping point." Implement a stamina potion that can only be used once per X minutes. That will allow you to get away if you are at a "stopping point" rather than continually camping a team of pirates. Also maybe a potion that lets your stamina drain slower, like a shot of adrenaline. Who knows, just a thought:) Thank you for your feedback though.
