Xbox Invites and PC

  • In Beta and this scale test I attempted to play on my PC with my kids, who were all on their Xbox's. However, anytime they attempted to invite me to their crew (from the lobby screen) I would never connect. If I hopped off and went to an Xbox no issues. Am I doing something wrong on the PC that would cause this? Does the insider hub need to be open? Does the game need to be launched from inside the Xbox app? (I have tried all of these by the way). Is this MS or Rare issue? I have no issues joining an Xbox party...just joining the crew. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide here. (Yes I know testing is over, I just want to solve this for future use)

  • @touchdown1504 were you still signed in on the Xbox as well when you tried playing on PC?
I didn't realise that signing someone else in on Xbox, didn't sign me out.

might not be the reason, just one thing that I noticed that was giving me problems

  • @triheadedmonkey No. I was once. But when I hopped from PC to my Xbox One, the Xbox One gave me a message "You are playing this on another device" Then something like would you like to switch. So I did. After that, I made sure whatever I was on, if I switched platforms I signed off 100%.

  • @touchdown1504 ahhh ok.

I managed to join my girlfriend (after sorting out what I mentioned above). Invites go through the Xbox app on PC so would need to accept from that, or press the button for 'Invite Friends' on PC (was X for me as I was using my SoT controller) then invite their gamertags.

that being said, it might have just been one of the issues that came from being a Scale test. They may have been throttling, simulating outages etc at that point.

    either way it sounds frustrating

roll on the next (as yet unconfirmed....) Beta! :)

  • @triheadedmonkey Thanks! Nah, wasn't frustrated at all. I hopped on the PC because the kids wanted me to record some of their antics at sea. I am sure one way or another I will have it sorted by launch. Just hoping someone in here ran into a similar issue and had a solution.

Probably won't get an answer right now anyhow, the foeums have devolved, yet again...sigh. We need a "I cancelled my preorder or I am a martyr" mega thread. Clean the forums up a bit!

  • Hello Sir...no, you are not doing anything wrong I think, but...your PC or your router might since its the first time you try to have an xbox and a PC talk to each other via the Xbox-App.

Open your Xbox app on your PC please, click on the settings and then on network, let it run a test and please let me know the result of that test. And most important, what Microsoft OS are you running?

And no, it is not Rare's issue since they are making a game that runs fine on PC and fine on Xbox...its getting both together that is the trick and thats Microsoft responsability (as far as I can tell right now).

  • This was the same problem I had. Didnt know if I was doing the pc/xbox thing wrong or what. After the multiplayer attempts, I said the heck with it and tried solo and it said it was still trying to match make and I never could get past that screen, never got to play last night ever. I'm afraid the devs got their work cut out for themselves if this is to work properly by release.

  • @scheefinator Thanks! I will research more and continue to toy with it.

  • Just to make sure your settled:

1.) You need the Xbox app open and running.
2.) You need to add your kids to your friendslist in that app. Imagine that App as being "the meeting hub".
3.) Start a group in the app, not in the game (best get invited by them directly.
4.) If you can make a group...you should be fine, let one of them start the game and invite you in the game lobby (while you are still on the desktop) and you will receive a message that you got invited, you will be pulled into the game with them if you accept it.

    1. if you cant make a group...then we need to talk further ;)
  • @kustho Awesome sauce!

Ok, Windows 10, Network I don't see a "test" function. Here is what the network page says:

    Internet Connection : Connected
Xbox Live Services: Up and running
    Xbox Multiplayer:
    NAT type: Moderate
    Service connectivity: Connected
    Performance:
    Latency: 50 ms
    Packet loss: 0%

On a side note I did find where I can "connect a device". My daughter is her room playing Roblox, I connected to her Xbox no issue. I am wondering if perhaps I can use this to make the router and my PC recognize the other Xbox consoles? Seems it is designed for streaming, but seems to me recognizing devices would help?

With that your pretty much golden Sir. Your network speaks microsoft and your PC does also. I can not assist you with the later question since I do not have an Xbox myself at home at the moment.

But, you should be able to add your daughter to your friendslist and you both should be able to start a party (group).

Understand that I (myself) know of no other game that is x-plattform Xbox-PC...I am since yesterday discovering the matter and wondering how microsoft handles it.

  • @kustho We have no problems joining a party together. The problem was connecting to the crew in SoT.

So, we had three kids playing and me (Captain Dad). My daughter invited the other kids to the Galleon on the lobby screen. Then invited me. They all loaded into a tavern. I stayed stuck on the "matchmaking" screen for at least 10 minutes. Then I restarted the comp, and had her try again. Same thing. At that point I gave up and jumped on an Xbox console to play with them.

  • @touchdown1504

You joined the dark side of gaming because you were out of solutions? Fun is allways what you make of it.

Anyway...that whole PC - Xbox thing is pretty uneven ground. Its new, its fresh and I know of no game that actually does it good so I could investigated what is different in SoT.

Sony will soon try the same with the PS4 and I'm curious to see how those gentlemen will handle it.

What we did, and what worked about each second or third time:

1.) create a group in the xbox app, no more then 4 players in total! Thats importants since you cant start a group with more then 4 gamewise ins SoT.

2.) start the game, have it running in the start screen (where you can chose big or smal ship).

3.) Alt Tab back and be in the Xbox app.

4.) have your xbox players invite you from inside the game.

5.) you will get a message that X invited you to a game of SoT. Accept that.

6.) You PC will switch back to SoT and you will be in that group.

7.) (do not touch anything) have your partyleader click on the launch button and the whole party will be thrown into the game and appear in a tavern.

The loading time for "searching for players" takes an eternity and chances are 50/50 that you dont really make it...but it does work sometimes. This last weekend was a network test and since its the "network" that lets PC and Xbox get together, it might still be flunky.

  • @kustho Thx man! Next test session I will give it a go! Seriously appreciate you taking the time to help out!
